“To This Day”
By: Shane Koyczan

“To This Day” is a spoken word poem written by Shane Koyczan. The poem talks about Koyczan experience in the past, specifically about bullying he and others received during their lives and its deep long-term impact. He was abandoned by his parents and brought up by his grandmother. He was bullied at school and was given the name “Pork Chop”. In the poem, he also states the ambitions he wanted to be when he grows up or simply, his dreams. When his dream being a professional wrestler didn’t take place he diverted into poetry. Later on the poem, he talks about how he stands up for himself. He talks about that he is not the only one being called by names but other people as well and it is continuing at present. He talks about that there is beauty in each of us and that we should not to give up.

The theme that I realized in the spoken poem is that you have to embrace yourself no matter how bad it can get. I also realized that ever since incidents like these happens, we see it affecting our lives today and how it can change our lives. I also learned how standing up for one’s self doesn’t mean to be violent or to hurt others. I learned the importance of standing up for one’s self. I also learned that bullying has a life-long impact on self-esteem. We somehow must become what we are not, sacrificing what we are to inherit the masquerade of what we will be. I also learned to love myself despite the ease with which I lean toward the opposite. And lastly, I realized that each and every one of us has beauty within us, and if we get see it, get a better and little closer and stare a little longer.

The poem is spoken to others who have been bullied and inspires hope and encouragement in them, but is also spoken to bullies who may gain empathy from hearing and seeing this heartfelt spoken word animation. We should stop bullying, because its effect has a very big impact on one’s life. I can integrate the things I learned in this spoken poem by not using violence or bullying to defend myself from others. I can also integrate this by spreading this poem’s awareness so that many can reflect and can have comfort. If all people will be one with this we can stop bullying and overcome the bullies. Stop Bullying!

...a half years. Despite the success he attained within a relatively short span of time in Italy, he was highly worried about their children‟s upbringing in an alien culture with different values and ethos. His wife too held the same view. By this time, Sanjeewa was nearly 9 years old and his sister who was born in Italy was just five. They thought if they did not take their children back to Sri Lanka now it would be too late. However, It was not easy for Steevan to make up his mind to return to Sri Lanka. He continued for a few more months in Italy. In October 1980 Steevan and his wife finally decided to communicate their intention of leaving Italy to Antonio Morayasu. Since then Steevan was waiting for an opportunity to speak to Antonio. At last, he got the chance to talk to him at a Christmas party in 1980. Antonio listened to him quietly for a moment and suddenly he broke his silence saying “What! What‟s wrong with us? You have never brought any complaints or grievances to me.” He continued saying “Look here. Italy has become your home country now. I don‟t think you can again settle in Sri Lanka with your children. Be calm! ”He thought that no way he could let Mr. Antonio down and leave Italy. The dialogue continued for several months. At one point of their dialogue, Antonio even offered a 15% salary increase to Steevan. After continued persuasion by Steevan, one day Antonio replied saying “Yes, I can understand what you mean.” However, Antonio wanted Steevan to stay for at...

Lok Pal Bill

...seeking the appointment of a Jan Lokpal, an independent body that would investigate corruption cases, complete the investigation within a year and envisages trial in the case getting over in the next one year. Drafted by Justice Santosh Hegde (former Supreme Court Judge and former Lokayukta of Karnataka), Prashant Bhushan (Supreme Court Lawyer) and Arvind Kejriwal (RTI activist), the draft Bill envisages a system where a corrupt person found guilty would go to jail within two years of the complaint being made and his ill-gotten wealth being confiscated. It also seeks power to the Jan Lokpal to prosecute politicians and bureaucrats without government permission. Retired IPS officer Kiran Bedi and other known people like Swami Agnivesh, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, Anna Hazare and Mallika Sarabhai are also part of the movement, called India Against Corruption. Its website describes the movement as "an expression of collective anger of people of India against corruption. We have all come together to force/request/persuade/pressurize the Government to enact the Jan Lokpal Bill. We feel that if this Bill were enacted it would create an effective deterrence against corruption." Anna Hazare, anti-corruption crusader, went on a fast-unto-death in April, demanding that this Bill, drafted by the civil society, be adopted. Four days into his fast, the government agreed to set up a joint committee with an equal number of members from the government and civil society side to draft the Lokpal...

...(Q1) NDAS starts their long journey since 1985. Currently state of NDA office automation, system integration and networking differs from one department to another while some departments work manually. The payroll department currently carries out its own data processing using a mini computer. Due to expansion of the business and complexity of the billing process these processes are automated throughout Florida offices. The marketing and sales department which is headed by Bob Jones runs as a Local Area Network limited the sales and marketing division itself. This connects every personal computer of each account representative. When we come to Accounts receivable division which is headed by Jane Van Dyke, a powerful microcomputer server provides database for both customer billing and bad debts. The accounts payable division that is led by john Lawson functions with its own vender data base stored on an old minicomputer server. This data base holds billing details such as billings of ODI to NDAS and also this division is responsible for the payroll process. A LAN can be established as well since employees here also got PC’s on their desk similar to accounts receivable division. Peter Browne, the maintenance supervisor of the fleet maintenance division refuses to automate his division’s record keeping processes and satisfied with the usual way. Therefore this division has no computer capability. Fleet maintenance division has another part which is ‘Dispatch’. This section...

...Diasporic Cross-Currents in Michael Ondaatje’s Anil’s Ghost and Anita Rau Badami’s The Hero’s Walk HEIKE HÄRTING N HIS REVIEW of Anil’s Ghost, Todd Hoffmann describes Michael Ondaatje’s novel as a “mystery of identity” (449). Similarly, Aritha van Herk identifies “fear, unpredictability, secrecy, [and] loss” (44) as the central features of the novel and its female protagonist. Anil’s Ghost, van Herk argues, presents its readers with a “motiveless world” of terror in which “no identity is reliable, no theory waterproof” (45). Ondaatje’s novel tells the story of Anil Tessera, a Sri Lankan expatriate and forensic anthropologist working for a UN-affiliated human rights organization. Haunted by a strong sense of personal and cultural dislocation, Anil takes up an assignment in Sri Lanka, where she teams up with a local archeologist, Sarath Diyasena, to uncover evidence of the Sri Lankan government’s violations of human rights during the country’s period of acute civil war. Yet, by the end of the novel, Anil has lost the evidence that could have indicted the government and is forced to leave the country, carrying with her a feeling of guilt for her unwitting complicity in Sarath’s death. On one hand, Anil certainly embodies an ethical (albeit rather schematic) critique of the failure of global justice. On the other, her character stages diaspora, in Vijay Mishra terms, as the “normative” and “ exemplary … condition of late modernity” (“Diasporic” 441) — a condition usually associated...

Buddhism

...Socially Engaged Buddhism Buddhism is a religion that is said to arise in India around the 6th or 7th century BCE, but has spread all around the world as the times went on. Buddhism focuses mainly on the teachings of Siddhartha Guatma, who is the current Buddha. Buddhism is ultimately about teaching a man to lead a good life that will eventually lead a person to enlightenment. With a standard of living being around for so long, the ways must change with the times. That’s where Socially Engaged Buddhism comes in. For Buddhists, Socially Engaged Buddhism is a Buddhism movement that provides an answer for social issues in the world. Socially Engaged Buddhism is a very important aspect to Buddhism and without it Buddhism would not be able to evolve and adapt with the world in issues such as war, poverty and human rights. Buddhism has a single figure as the founder, Siddhartha. Siddhartha went on a “great departure” after seeing pain and suffering that other people were experiencing around him, which had no idea this was a problem before. After his journey he experiences Nirvana and teaches everything he has experienced in his life. On the other hand, Socially Engaged Buddhism does not come from a single founder. That doesn’t mean there still aren’t important figures attached to the movement. Thich Nhat Hanh is a teacher who even to this day still offers his knowledge. He is also active in the peace movement and promotes non-violence. He tries to emphasize people to “look at reality...

Cargills

...Sri Lanka | Beverage, Food & Tobacco Initiation of coverage EQUITY RESEARCH 19 December 2013 Cargills (Ceylon) PLC (CARG.N0000) A consumption play Cargills (Ceylon) PLC (CARG) is the largest organized food retailer by market capitalization listed on the Colombo Stock Exchange (CSE), and also manufactures a range of fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) and operates a fast-food chain. The company is majority owned by its parent company CT Holdings PLC (CTHR), itself one of the largest traded conglomerates on the CSE. We expect the typical signs of consumption growth, such as rising GDP and private consumption expenditure, to support CARG’s revenue growth, at an 11.3% CAGR over FY14E-FY16E. We also forecast CARG’s EBIT margin to expand to 4.3% in FY16E from 4.1% in FY13. Margin development across all segments is likely to be tempered by persisting high operating costs, particularly electricity and fuel expenses, as well as currently underwhelming results from the brewery and biscuits businesses. CARG’s debt and gearing levels in the past three years have risen due to a string of acquisitions and investments to expand capacity of several product lines. Our SOTP and P/E analyses yield a valuation range of LKR110-149, compared with the share price of LKR149 as of 18 December 2013. We forecast revenue to post an 11.3% CAGR over FY14E-FY16E as consumption levels are set to improve. CARG’s revenue is likely to be driven by its retail segment, which we forecast to also grow at an 11.2% CAGR...
