From August Wilson's stage direction, "Thirty five years old, with an eleven year old daughter, she is still in mourning for her husband after three years" (1.1.62-63) In describing the Charles house, the stage direction adds, "although there is evidence of a woman's touch, there is a lack of warmth and vigor" (1.1.4) This last statement could just as well be describing Berniece. Having lived through the tragic loss of her father and more recently the loss of her husband, she does not want to deal in the past. We get a feel for her detached and cold existence when her brother shows up. Boy Willie, primarily the antagonist, is the polar opposite of Berniece. [He] is thirty years old. He has an infectious grin and a boyishness that is apt for his name. He is brash and impulsive, talkative, and somewhat crude in speech and manners. A contemporary of Beethoven, Hewitt was born and raised in England until moving to New York in 1792 at the age of 22. Throughout his career, James Hewitt was very active in both Boston and New York as a conductor, composer/arranger and music publisher. The story behind Hewitt’s sonata unfolded in Trenton, New Jersey on December 25th 1776 as President Washington led his Army across the Delaware River, preceding The Battle of Trenton that occurred the next day. Although a large number of the opposing Hessians escaped, within an hour of battle nearly nine hundred were captured by Washington’s Army. This was the first pivotal victory of the American Revolutionary War, boosting reenlistments into the Continental Army. Twenty years after this event, James Hewitt published his sonata in 1797 after living as an American citizen for just over five years. The concert was an opportunity for Bojan to feature some of his best work selected from the “Soul shelter” and “Transpacifi” albums, namely Natural Ground, Buzz, No 9, Pick It Up and Empty Shell. The performance also featured some new, incomplete works which are still being developed. Many of them were influenced by traditional Balkan music, as Bojan said. The band consisted of Josh Roseman on trombone, Ruth Goller on bass, Sebastian Rochford on drums and Bojan Z himself on the piano. Bojan Z began his concert by banging out a percussion rhythm on the grand piano’s lid and top, which was strange but really interesting. This acted as a intro point for a modern and funky, danceable jazz tune along with bitonal structures and bitonal points. At multiples times, he reached inside the piano and touched out bass notes directly on the strings like a bassist usually does on his own instrument. That was really amusing for the audience. Some of Bojan Z's tune were played through a couple of effects boxes (one of which as a digital delay) and occasionally on a xenophone, an electronic keyboard of his own design. The poems “Secretary Chant” by Marge Piercy and “Player Piano” by John Updike are examples of ways to effectively use imagery and sound to convey a message. Although both poems use sound and imagery, they use these elements in different ways. Updike uses sound and imagery to portray human characteristics in a nonliving object, while Piercy uses the same elements to mechanize a woman into an office machine. Even though Updike’s poem is more enjoyable, Piercy is more effective in the use of imagery and sound. In “Secretary Chant,” Piercy describes a woman being consumed by her job as a secretary. Piercy’s message is that women who perform the same secretarial jobs day in and day out can become mechanized. Piercy expresses his message by painting a picture of this woman with simple sentences, simple metaphors, and obvious grammatical mistakes. Each of these techniques is used to convey a sound and image so that the reader can become familiar with the transformation this woman is going through. The music pieces played were Adagio from the Oboe Concerto in D minor, Faschingsschwank aus Wien op.26, Sonata in C-Sharp minor, and four different movements from the Preludes Book I. All the music played were from a variety of composers. The program was different from others, because it had only one instrument. However, it did not stop from being a fantastic performance. The music piece that was interesting to me was Faschingsswank aus Wien op.26 also known as Viennese Carnival Pranks which its five movements known as Allegro, Romanze, Scherzino, Intermezzo, and Finale. The texture of this music piece was exchanged from monophonic to polyphonic with gave a very enjoyable rhythm. In the harmonic aspect of the music, the movements had consonance with some dissonances.
