Liberal arts, according to Merriam Webster Dictionary, are areas of study that are intended to give you general knowledge, rather than to develop specific skills needed for a profession. To simplify the definition, liberal arts enhances the intellectual capacities of the person, it enhances his/her reasons and judgement. This movie did and did not really show the real ideals of the importance of liberal arts. As stated in the definition, liberal arts enhances the person’s reasons and judgement, the film did a good job with the development of the characters but there is no enhancement of judgement (of the characters) present in the film. The last category is extremely rare, and I have hardly found across a couple of movies which have moved me to this extent. Foremost among those would be the 2003 Tamil masterpiece Anbe Sivam (translated to Love is God). Anbe Sivam was released about 8 years ago and is widely acknowledged as the most profound and deepest of Kamal Haasan’s films till date; Kamal also co-wrote the dialogues with Madan, apart from playing one of the protagonists. The other protagonist is played by Madhavan in probably what is his most memorable role ever. The film also stars Kiran Rathod, Nasser and Santhana Bharathi in important roles. It was directed by Sundar C (though widely rumoured to have been ghost-directed by Kamal himself) and the music was composed by Vidyasagar. And up ‘til now, it is still gaining a wider audience captivating the hearts of many, transcending from generations to generations. I’ve only come to watch Frozen around 2 weeks ago and I thought to myself, “Wow, ako nalang ata ang nilalang na hindi pa nakakapanood nito hahaha” but it’s never too late! I’ve watched it with my sisters and I can’t help but notice how it was made. I kept analyzing the background, the character design, and the movement itself. Let me elucidate my thoughts and insights on this 3D animated film. First, I guess we can’t take the critique out of us MMA individuals for we are already inculcated with theories and have applied our knowledge and skills into concrete work that repetition, it is already natural for us to notice things in animated films people wouldn’t normally notice. I love the character design of Elsa and Anna, two contrasting designs yet with striking similarity all the while making them both stand out in their own respective characters. There was also a great transition in the character growth of the two; I also adored the colours used for each character that evidently manifested all throughout the film. The food vendor is parked in the parking lot and the man outside is placing a food order. There is a story being exchanged between the two men with medium shots taken place. The man outside the vending truck seems like he has something planned and is up to no good. Although the film is in another language, we can get the jist of the story. As the next scene approaches, we can see that there is a woman, who is not fully dressed sitting on the couch in her apartment. Next there is a tracking shot, to where we see the thief coming in from the window into the woman’s apartment. After this shot, there is another full shot of the thief attempting to steal the radio. As he tries to steal the merchandise from this apartment, all of a sudden his stomach erupts and off he flees to the bathroom. I would have to wonder if the man who owns the food vending truck gave the thief something bad to eat on purpose knowing that he was planning to commit a crime? Perhaps the woman that the thief was stealing the radio from, was in fact his girlfriend or someone he was in love with, hence Lionel Richie’s song that is playing at the end of the film (Easy Like A Sunday Morning).
