The screening test in the article is the diagnostic utility of using television volume as a marker for hearing loss. This screening test is compared to the gold standard for hearing loss which is known as a pure tone audiogram (PTA). Each patient’s PTA was used as a reference standard. The results of the experiment indicated that if the patient reported viewing television with an increased volume, then there was a 68 per cent chance of the patient have a hearing loss of 25 dB or more. Although the study concluded that self-reported television volume can be a useful screening tool in patients presenting with hearing impairment, it is not very specific and should not be used to replace the current gold standard to measure hearing loss.
