Standing Up Even When People Are Against You In the 1930s segregation was a big problem and some people were too afraid to speak up for what's right. Especially black families who weren't getting things equal as the whites did. In the book Roll Of Thunder Hear My Cry by Mildred Taylor, a black family is fighting for equal rights with everything they do. In Roll Of Thunder Hear My Cry standing up for what's right is a huge theme that emerges. One Example is when Papa and Mr. Morrison are willing to stand up for something that's not right. Papa and Mr. Morrison hear about tj and want to help him. Papa even says "if I don't bring my gun, they'll hang tj, and he just happened to be the fool to trigger their madness, fool or not I can't watch

Roll Of Thunder Hear My Cry Quotes

...book, Roll of Thunder Hear my Cry by Mildred D. Tayler, the main character, Cassie Logan, was a very courageous young girl. She did so many things that no young girl through her time period would do. Cassie is a warm hearted girl that would do anything for her family, even if it gets her in trouble. I would do the same though. Cassie was an outgoing little girl that spoke with her hart. She made sure nothing stood in her way to get her family happy. Cassie was very courageous throughout the book. She did many things that I would do if I was in her position. The first time I saw how brave she was, was when she and her brothers went out and dug a hole in the rain so that the bus with the white kids on it gets. They did this because they always walked to school and since it started to rain the bus, filled with white children, will splash them with the mud and laugh. “At noon, we met as planned and ducked into the unlocked toolshed where all the church and school garden tools were kept….When we reached the place where we had fallen into the gully, Stacy halted. “All...

It rattled and creaked at every movement; the pail, hanging on behind, chimed in gruffly, and from these sounds alone and from the wretched rags of leather hanging loose about its peeling body one could judge of its decrepit age and readiness to drop to pieces. Two of the inhabitants of N. were sitting in the chaise; they were a merchant of N. called Ivan Ivanitch Kuzmitchov, a man with a shaven face wearing glasses and a straw hat, more like a government clerk than a merchant, and Father Christopher Sireysky, the priest of the...

Love and War

...that love never fails, That all is fair in love and war, But really, how do you know, What love can or can not do? And if all is fair in love and war, then Why does someone always end up getting hurt? I know my love will never fail, Because I love you with all my heart and soul, Because I would give my life for you, And everything I am or have just to be with you. However, I can not be fair to all Because all is not fair in love and war. I wish to hurt no one, so I don't, But by doing so, I hurt myself. My heart wants to be with you so much And yet I wish to hurt no one. So I don't, I don't confess my love for you, I keep it locked inside, And as a friend I stay by your side. My love for you remains forever pure and unchanged. I love you, Yes, I do, with all my heart and soul, With all that I am and hope to be just for you. My heart untamed and wild, dreaming of what if, But it's cut in half by the love I feel for both. My heart belongs to you but only half, Because I gave the other half away to him. Now I suffer for my love, for both are great, But only one, I wish I could be with forever. All is not fair in love and war, So I love you both and suffer much, Because my heart is wounded, torn in half. I can not speak of my deep love for you, I can not confess my feelings to you. So I go on with my life pretending nothing's wrong. Why must I go on without your love? It's faith, I guess, that I suffer so. It's destiny to love you so. -------------------------------------------------------------...

NAMES AND PLACES HAVE BEEN CHANGED TO PROTECT THE LORIEN SIX, WHO REMAIN IN HIDING. OTHER CIVILIZATIONS DO EXIST. SOME OF THEM SEEK TO DESTROY YOU. Chapter One MY NAME IS MARINA, AS OF THE SEA, BUT I WASN’T called that until much later. In the beginning I was known merely as Seven, one of the nine surviving Garde from the planet Lorien, the fate of which was, and still is, left in our hands. Those of us who aren’t lost. Those of us still alive. I was six when we landed. When the ship jolted to a halt on Earth, even at my young age I sensed how much was at stake for us—nine Cêpan, nine Garde— and that our only chance waited for us here. We had entered the planet’s atmosphere in the midst of a storm of our own creation, and as our feet found Earth for the very first time, I remember the wisps of steam that rolled off the ship and the goose bumps that covered my arms. I hadn’t felt the wind in a year, and it was freezing outside. Somebody was there waiting for us. I don’t know who he was, only that he handed each Cêpan two sets of clothes and a large envelope. I still don’t know what was in it. As a group we huddled...

...troubled with snipers. Am glad I have done my duty. First wash for a week – go down to the Water Hole, which is always covered by Turkish snipers – it was safer in the trenches than here – all around this spot are dead and wounded who have been hit when dodging round this corner; however, one must drink, even if the price be Death. Make dug-outs in our rest camps, but men are continually caught by the snipers. Many are commencing to suffer from dysentery, though the spirit of the men is splendid, always ready for a joke. Signaller Walker just hit in the mouth – we considered we were out of range in our dug-out but the snipers are everywhere. Sergeant of the machine gun is writing a very amusing diary, full of humour; I wish I had his spirit. In the dug-out just above me a poor chap is lying very ill but has asked me to say nothing to the medical officer as he does not want to get sent away in the middle of the fun, as he calls it. Of such stuff are soldiers made – I think if I were in his place I’d be glad of an excuse to get out of this Hell, though I don’t think I should ever have forgiven myself if I had not come. I hear that to-morrow we are going to make a charge – the Turks are cutting our supplies off; the situation is severely critical. To read this in a newspaper makes an item of passing interest; to experience it is something quite different – if we are up against it, please God I may die in the same spirit that I know my comrades will display, for they know not defeat...

The Hunger Games

...To Annalena Part One "The Tributes" When I wake up, the other side of the bed is cold. My fingers stretch out, seeking Prim’s warmth but finding only the rough canvas cover of the mattress. She must have had bad dreams and climbed in with our mother. Of course, she did. This is the day of the reaping. I prop myself up on one elbow. There’s enough light in the bedroom to see them. My little sister, Prim, curled up on her side, cocooned in my mother’s body, their cheeks pressed together. In sleep, my mother looks younger, still worn but not so beaten-down. Prim’s face is as fresh as a raindrop, as lovely as the primrose for which she was named. My mother was very beautiful once, too. Or so they tell me. Sitting at Prim’s knees, guarding her, is the world’s ugliest cat. Mashed-in nose, half of one ear missing, eyes the color of rotting squash. Prim named him Buttercup, insisting that his muddy yellow coat matched the bright flower. I le hates me. Or at least distrusts me. Even though it was years ago, I think he still remembers how I tried to drown him in a bucket when Prim brought him home. Scrawny kitten, belly swollen with worms, crawling with fleas. The last thing I needed was another mouth to feed. But Prim begged so hard, cried even, I had to let him stay. It turned out okay. My mother got rid of the vermin and he’s a born mouser. Even catches the occasional rat. Sometimes, when I clean a kill, I feed Buttercup the entrails. He has stopped hissing at me. Entrails...
