2. The Actions of Ronald Reagan
Learning Objectives 1. To develop a k&u of the aims and actions of Reagan. 2. To assess the Strategic Defensive Initiative.

* Reagan’s anti-communist rhetoric heralded the Second Cold War which saw a deliberate attempt to undermine the forces of communism. * Reagan’s actions/policies were described as a militarised counter-revolution. They were much more aggressive than those of Carter including extensive re-arming and providing convert help to those fighting against communist forces or governments.

Action | Aim | Key Features | 1. Increasing Nuclear Arms | * Regain American military supremacy * Cripple the USSR financially – to compete they would face bankruptcy * Supremacy in arms would therefore grant the USA strength in all areas & force the Soviet leadership to make concessions | * An unprecedented increase in military spending – defence spending was increased by 13% in 1982 and over 8% in each of the following two years * New methods of deploying nuclear missiles developed e.g. Stealth bomber & Trident submarines * Strategic Defense Initiative – SDI – or ‘Star Wars’ est. 1983. The deployment of anti-ballistic missile systems in space |

* Advantages of SDI… * Disadvantages of SDI…

Source A
David Painter, The Cold War: An International History, 1999

SDI was a technologically ambitious and extremely expensive plan to develop a nationwide ballistic-missile defense system that would deploy weapons in outer space to destroy enemy missiles in flight. Popularly known as Star Wars, SDI threatened to violate several US-Soviet agreements, including the Limited Test Ban Treaty of 1963, the Outer Space Treaty of 1967, and the ABM Treaty of 1972…

Many analysts regarded SDI as a dangerous and destabilising attack on mutual deterrence, which was based on each side’s ability to retaliate against a nuclear attack… [They] also warned that SD would accelerate the arms race.

In addition to re-establishing US military superiority, which they believed had been lost during Détente, and regaining the initiative in the Cold War, Reagan and some of his supporters later claimed that they planned to use an arms race, especially in fields where the United States was technologically superior, to place great strain on the Soviet economy. Although the US build-up, and especially SDI, alarmed the Soviets, there is no evidence that Soviet defense spending, which had begun to level off in the mid-1970s, increased significantly in response to Reagan’s initiatives.

Star Wars

...Star Wars is an American epic space opera franchise centered on a film series created by George Lucas. The franchise depicts a galaxy described as "far, far away" in the distant past, and portrays Jedi as a representation of good, in conflict with the Sith, their evil counterpart. Their weapon of choice, the lightsaber, is commonly recognized in popular culture. The franchise's storylines contain many themes, with influences from philosophy and religion. The first film in the series, Star Wars, was released on May 25, 1977 by 20th Century Fox, and became a worldwide pop culture phenomenon. It was followed by two sequels, released in 1980 and 1983. A prequel trilogy of films were later released between 1999 and 2005. Reaction to the original trilogy was largely positive, while the prequel trilogy received a more mixed reaction from critics and fans. All six films were nominated for or won Academy Awards, and all were box office successes; the overall box office revenue generated totals $4.38 billion,[3] making Star Wars the fifth-highest-grossing film series.[4] The series has spawned an extensive media franchise – the Expanded Universe – including books, television series, computer and video games, and comic books, resulting in significant development of the series's fictional universe. In 2012, The Walt Disney Company acquired Lucasfilm for $4.05 billion and announced three new Star Wars films, with the first film, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, planned for release in December...

Star Wars

...I was very surprised at how many people and time it took to make just 1 minute of film for Star Wars Episode III. I have seen all of the star wars movies and I knew that they involved a lot of work, but I truly was taken aback by the actual number of people that the movie required for one 60 second scene. I heard in the clip that this was one of the most important scenes from this film, but still could not believe what it took put it together. The amount of people working on the shot where the camera is watching the lava flow through the mountainous landscape on the planet Mustafar was amazing. There were 47 “practical modelers” who worked on building the set for that one shot. They had to find a good material, carve it down to look the way that George Lucas envisioned it, paint it, and figure out a way to have lava flow over it to make it look perfect. They built the set on a large platform that could be tilted in order to control the speed of the lava flow, which was very smart. They also not only had to decide what to use as lava, which they used Methacil for because of its color and viscosity; but then how to make it light up to match the ominous glow that real lava has. After they had finished the shot and disassembled the set, George Lucas looked at the footage and was not happy with what he saw. He envisioned the shot going against the flow of the lava, and up the landscape of Mustafar. This in turn took even more manpower to figure out how to fix this problem. It went...

Star Wars

...Episode IV: A New Hope Far off in a distant galaxy, the starship belonging to Princess Leia, a young member of the Imperial Senate, is intercepted in the course of a secret mission by a massive Imperial Star Destroyer. An imperial boarding party blasts its way onto the captured vessel, and after a fierce firefight the crew of Leia’s ship is subdued. The dark, forbidding figure of Darth Vader appears, brutally interrogating the crew and ordering his stormtroopers to search the ship for the secret documents he believes it is carrying: the technical readouts for the Empire’s mightiest weapon—a planet-sized battle station called the Death Star. In the confusion, Princess Leia slips away and hides the secret documents, as well as a recorded plea for help, in the memory of R2-D2, a maintenance droid (robot). Leia is taken prisoner, but R2 gets away in an escape pod, along with his best friend, the protocol droid C-3PO. After crash-landing on the planet below, a barren, desert world called Tatooine, the droids set off in search of civilization but soon quarrel over the way to go. R2 insists that he has a mission to perform, but C-3PO wants no part of such an adventure. The two droids go their separate ways but are soon reunited when they are both captured by Jawas, child-sized scavengers who trade in droids and technological scraps. The Jawas sell the droids to Owen Lars, a moisture farmer on a remote homestead. Owen’s nephew, young Luke Skywalker, cleans the droids and, as he does...

Personal Narrative-Star Wars

...Last year on Christmas Eve my co-worker brought his 7-year-old son into the office for the half day. H came with a sack full of dinosaurs and drew me a picture of a T-Rex (which still hangs on my cubby wall). This year H came with his Star Wars coloring pens and I now have R2D2 hanging next to Rex. H and his dad chided me for not knowing who all the latest Star Wars characters are and all the hype around the Christmas release of Rogue 1. So I dug up the flash drive another co-worker gave me last year containing the first 6 Star Wars movies and watched them (in the new order) over the holiday break. (Sadly, just as I finished watching Episode 4 - the original movie, Carrie Fisher passed away. My God! – she was my age - how could she have a massive heart attack!?) I finished watching the last original two (now 5 and 6). There were a few things that made me question my memories of the movies until at the end of Return of the Jedi when a translucent Hayden Christenson got to stand next to the...

Disney, Star Wars

...It is the grand reopening of the Disney store in the mall. I am overly excited as the new store is undoubtedly going to have the new Star Wars toys. I rush over to the half scale Darth Vader statue standing on top of a circular shelving unit filled with numerous amounts of Star Wars plushes. I want the 3 ½ inch action figures not the plush Chewbacca staring me down with its huge black eyes. These aren’t the toys I’m looking for, I move along. Then I spot them hanging from racks on a shelf behind the circular unit. I grab one of the new Star Wars Rebels figures and look in disappointment as I notice it only has 5 points of articulation (its head, arms, and legs), made of cheap plastic and the paint applications are way off especially on the face. The figure is giving me a cross eyed look as it hopes I put it out of its misery. Is this what happens when Disney buys out Star Wars? Is this what they do with the beloved toy line? They replace them with McDonald’s toys? As an avid Star Wars collector with over three hundred figures plus much more memorabilia I am very disappointed with how Disney is handling the toy franchises they have taken over. They do offer a higher quality toy line for both Marvel and Star Wars toys but they cost way more than they used to. I was able to buy a high quality Star Wars action figure for less than $10 before Disney bought Lucas Films out. Now $10 will get you a figure that mirrors a figure from the 70’s only without the charm the vintage ones...

Star Wars Conspircy

...Alfredo Sigala Conspiracy Theory Death Star Attack Introduction We’ve all heard the Death Star attack. We all know about Luke Skywalker and the Rebel Alliance and how they were able to steal the plans of the Death star to find its weakness. Then mounted a foolhardy attack on the most powerful, well-defended battle station ever built. And we’ve all seen the video of the one-in-a-million shot that resulted in a massive chain reaction that not just damaged, but completely obliterated that massive technological wonder. Like many, I believed what i saw during the attack. But as I watched the video again, I began to realize that all was not as it seemed. And the more I questioned the official story, the more clear it became. Like many citizens, I have many questions that I would like answered: was the mighty Imperial government really too incompetent to prevent a handful of a ragtag team of rebels from destroying one of their most prized assets? Or are they hiding something from us? Who was really behind the attack? Why did they want the Death Star destroyed? No matter what the answers, we have a problem. We all heard the story of the rebels stealing the plans for the Death Star. Darth Vader chasing down Princess Leia for stealing the plans. The chase was stop at Tatooine when Darth Vader Star Destroyer was able to blast Leias cruiser. Princess Leia was then captured by Darth Vader on her ship, Tantive IV. But before getting captured by Vader she was able to give the plans...

Interpersonal Communication In Star Wars

Even in the midst of a galactic civil war, it is possible to identify interpersonal problems within families and examine how different methods of communication could provide remedies for the conflicts. In this essay, we are going to be discussing the hit 1977 blockbuster Star Wars--later retitled Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope--and how our study of interpersonal communication in family relationships can be exemplified in the film. Star Wars Persuassive Essay

...Star Wars, a legacy that has been around since 1977. Star Wars truly stood the test of time in many ways: a wide fan base, well written story, and a lot of content. The fan base for Star Wars is rampant with the amount of people that adore Star Wars. The fan base starts with the older generation which is the group that saw the first three movies (A New Hope, Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi) which are called the sequels. George Lucas, the creator of Star Wars, knew how to draw people in by the story. The most noticeable things about Star Wars is the opening crawl text, the film scores, and Darth Vader’s voice/ breathing. Then to the second generation of Star Wars fans which were around during the prequels (The Phantom Menace, The Clone Wars, and Revenge of the Sith). The Phantom Menace came out in 1999. These movies had a lot of CGI (Computer Generated Images). It advanced technology because they did what some people couldn’t in film making. The older generation was still around when these came out and were still hyped about more Star Wars and the origin of some of the characters stories. Now we have new movies with Disney buying LucasFilm. These will affect the third generation. The only movie we know of continuing from Return of the Jedi is The Force Awakens which comes out in less than a month. Just from the trailers it shows a very well written story. People bought movies theaters out in less than a day when they were able to be purchased. It’s rare for that...

Personal Narrative-Star Wars Day

...Loving Husband has always wanted to go to a Star Wars Weekend, but between deployments and everything else in life, we never got to go. However, this year was different. This year we were living 5 minutes from Hollywood Studios, where the event is held, and this year, we had free passes! LH’s work schedule screwing everything up is a running theme throughout our lives, so it was no surprise that we ended up not being able to make it to the park until the very last day of the event. We had managed to make our way to the park on Star Wars Day, May the 4th. I was surprised that it wasn’t all that busy on the 4th. I expected traffic jam city, but we were able to walk freely through the area around Star Tours and even have front row view to the Jedi Training Academy show (videos below). I don’t know if people just weren’t feeling it this year or what, but more room for me to walk I guess!...
