I have been searching for a company for the past year that has some of the values that I strongly believe. I believe in giving back to the community and serving others that’s the reason I believe I have been drawn to Chick fil A. I love that your company gives back to first responders by providing them with food during time of crisis. ...Chick-Fil-A Selling Chicken with a side of GOD A Positive Ethical Organization Chasity Wilson 10-13-2015   Chick-fil-A: Selling Chicken with a side of GOD WHAT DISTINGUISHES AN ETHICAL COMPANY? We as Americans tend to focus on companies unethical behavior, lapses of judgement, corporate misconduct or the methods corporations may use to hide unethical business practices from the public view this process leads to national scrutiny. We seldom recognize an organization that displays positive-intentional ethic behaviors that are defined as acceptable by the American people. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the ethical standards of the fast food chain Chick-Fil-A and determine if the company establishes a code of ethics. The Webster Dictionary defines ethics as following accepted rules of personal and professional behavior. It is prescribed philosophy dealing with questions of what is good and what is bad combined with moral duty and obligation, the principles of moral behavior governing an individual or group. By implementing a standard of ethical behavior, as a business, the restaurant chain Chick-Fil-A in my opinion exemplifies a living code of ethics as a cognitive, affective, and behavior manifestation of an ethical organization. In your opinion has Chick-Fil-A set a new standard for a positive ethical organization and does the concept of ethics and integrity have a deeper meaning that what the dictionary definition provides? It’s not every day that the leader of a big business steps into a national debate that has the potential to offend many of its customers. But Dan Cathy, president of the popular fast food chain Chick-fil-A, has done just that The fast food chains in-your-face Christian values it was Dan Cathy’s reaffirmation of his firm’s same-sex marriage stance that set off a wave of protests. Cathy admitted his anti-equality stance probably wasn’t a wise business decision, regretting making the company a symbol in the marriage debate. On the one hand, you could argue leaders of businesses, particularly private, family-owned ones, should be able to speak their minds. But when a business leader elects to take a public and vocal position on a hot-button political issue in an election year, he or she also risks losing the support of many of its customers. “Every leader goes through different phases of maturity, growth and development and it helps by (recognizing) the mistakes that you make,” Cathy said. “And you learn from those mistakes. If not, you’re just a fool. I’m thankful that I lived through it and I learned a lot from it( McGregor, J. (2012, July 19). Chick-fil-A president Dan Cathy bites...

Chick-Fil-a

...Chick-fil-A Dustin Grace BUS 360-Belhaven University Over time more and more people have become busier in their everyday lives. Therefore, there is less time to prepare and cook meals for the family. As more parents are on the go, the more they appreciate establishments like fast food restaurants. These types of restaurants are convenient and for the most part inexpensive. Customers can drive up to the drive-thru window to get their food if they don’t want to leave the comfort of their car. They also have the option of going inside and sitting down to enjoy their meal. There are many fast food chains around, but none compare to the phenomenon known as Chick-fil-A. As the company’s name reveals, Chick-fil-A centers their business around chicken. Their slogan that you’ll see on most billboards “Eat Mor Chikin,” is provoking just that. There isn’t a hamburger to be found on the menu. In Chick-fil-A’s case, chicken equals gold and boy do they serve it in many different ways. What genius came up with the novel idea of centering and entire restaurant around chicken? That man would be Truett Cathy. It was the year 1946 when Truett Cathy started his career in the restaurant industry. Mr. Cathy and his brother did not attend a restaurant school and had not knowledge on how to run a restaurant. They both served in the United States Army during World War II. When they came back to the United States after serving...

Chick-Fil-a

...Chick-Fil-A Case Study Marketing Principles 3/11/2011 Jamie Roof I very much enjoyed listening to this video case. I had no idea what Chick-Fil-A came from and why it is so good. The only time I have come across the restaurant is when I am shopping. I tend not to eat when I shop so my experience with this company is very minimal. It is very good from what I remember. I am a big foodie and love trying new things. It is very refreshing to see a restaurant start off the way it did with hard work and dedication and then seeing what it has become many years later. I also think it is wonderful to see the founding family still involved in present operations. The entire campaign for Chick-Fil-A gives me a chuckle every time I come across it. The fact the menu is all chicken products with a cow spokesman are very ironic and perfect at the same time. I really like beef, but chicken tends to be a much healthier alternative. I like to know how my food is being prepared and for that reason, I usually steer clear of fast food restaurants. It was very nice to see a company that hand breads its chicken daily in order to preserve freshness and quality. When the VP of Marketing was talking about the chain, I agreed most with his comments regarding the fact consumers will spend money on quality ingredients. With that being said, Chick-Fil-A does have a slightly higher price tag than some other top competitors, but the quality is bar none. I will spend more for quality. I think most...

When founder and Chief Executive Officer, S. Truett Cathy, founded his first restaurant in 1946 oddly named Dwarf Grill, in Hapeville Georgia, he never thought that he will be involved with constructing the second largest quick-service chicken restaurant chain in the United States, with over 1,700 locations in 39 states and Washington, D.C. In 2012, annual sales were well over $4.6 billion. Not too shabby for a company that since its inception in 1946 closes its doors each and every Sunday faithfully . The key players of this restaurant chain or the executive committee consist of S. Truett Cathy, the Chairman, Founder, and Chief Executive Officer. Cathy built his life and business based on hard work, humility and biblical principles. In his 2002 book, “Eat Mor Chikin: Inspire More People”, he said, “Nearly every moment of every day we have the opportunity to give something to some else-our time, our love, our resources.” With these Truett Cathy has built Chik-fil-A as the second-largest quick-service chicken restaurant chain in the United States based on annual sales. ...culture differs from the other. In the fast food industry the corporate cultures can be as different as night and day. While one company may believe that training is time and money well spent another may believe that training, whether it be cross training or promotional training, is a waste of time and money and that most employees will better serve the company by cooking more food. In other words better the bottom line not the employee. However the above mentioned “bottom line” mentality is not part of the culture at Chipotle or Chick fil A. Both of these companies hire with the mindset of hiring to promote and grow that employee. “The key to our success there is the strength of our people culture,” Chipotle spokesman Chris Arnold wrote in an e-mail (Melnick, 2011). These two companies share this idea of growing the employee and promoting from within but their corporate cultures have other traits that distinguish them from one another. For example Chick fil A endorses and promotes a Christian attitude in their everyday business operations. This attitude is reiterated...

Personal Worldview & Business Ethics Paper

...Personal Worldview & Business Ethics Paper Liberty University BMAL 560 January 25, 2015 STEP 1 To what extent should personal religious beliefs impact our decisions about business ethics? Personal religious beliefs should impact all decisions about business ethics. If your beliefs are truly mandated in your life, then you have no choice but to be fair and honest about your business decisions. Business decisions can sometimes be difficult and harsh, but that is no reason to comprise the integrity of what you believe in. In 2012, Summers & Summers concluded that from the “Christian worldview”, God is the source and creator of all things. This means that God has provided all the resources we need in order for those needs to be satisfied. Our task is to use these resources properly. (pp. 30). Psalms 24:1 tells us “The earth is the Lord’s and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it; for he founded it upon the seas and established it upon the waters” (NIV). To what extent do your personal religious (or non-religious) beliefs about life impact your sense of business ethics and personal decision-making? The extent of my owm personal religious beliefs about life impacted my sense of business ethics and personal decicion-making. As a new Revenue Agent for the Internal Revenue Service, my on-the-job trainer told me to always assume the taxpayer was a liar. I was not able to do that. Virtue

...In the March 2002 issue of the Harvard Business Review, Roger Martin proposed his virtue matrix as a framework for analyzing corporate social responsibility. The purpose of this paper is to discuss three recent newspaper articles that showcase acts of corporate social responsibility and to provide an evaluation of the virtue matrix in regard to its usefulness for understanding corporate social responsibility in addition to how the matrix relates to government regulation. The first article for discussion is entitled “McDonald’s to phase out pork from suppliers that cage pigs over 10 years” (York, 2012). The article reports on McDonalds’ plan to gradually eliminate the use of pig gestational crates in its U.S. supply chain over the next ten years. Gestational crates are used to confine female pigs for most of their adult life as it is reasoned by some that pregnant sows become aggressive around food. The process has been condemned by animal rights activists as unnecessary and cruel (York, 2012). The article goes on to say that McDonald’s is not the only fast food restaurant that is engaging in this act, Burger King and Wendy’s also have plans to phase out the use of these crates. McDonald’s has pledged to work with farmers to move toward other methods of confinement that will serve both of their needs. Given the widespread movement to ban gestational crates by other fast food chains this act by McDonald’s falls into the bottom left quadrant of the matrix, the choice section...

We will then evaluate three scenarios described by determining two things: 1) Whether we can legally fire the employee; and 2) what primary action(s) should be taken to limit liability and impact on operations. We will specify the ethical theory that best supports our decision. Finally, we will examine Alabama’s policy on employment-at-will and provide an actual example where an employer or employee utilized the employment-at-will doctrine within the last five (5) years. Definition of Employment-At-Will Employment-at-will is a legal rule that developed in the nineteenth century, giving employer’s unfettered power to “dismiss their employees at will for good cause, for no cause, or even for cause morally wrong, without being thereby guilty of a legal wrong.” The economic philosophy of laissez-faire provided theoretical support for employment-at-will.
