Stem Cell Research
Stem cells have the extraordinary potential to reproduce into many different types of cells throughout the body. There are two types of stem cells: embryonic stem cells, which are derived from the early stage of embryos and adult stem cells that are found in various types of tissues. Someday, these stem cells may serve as a repair system for the human body. They could reconstruct cells and tissues as a means of therapy of a variety of diseases, including spinal cord injury, arthritis, diabetes Alzheimer’s disease, and so on. Stem cells have the power to become any type of cell in which they help aid in the replacement of numerous types of diseases in the human body.

Stem cells have the power to become any type of cell in which they help aid in the replacement of numerous types of diseases in the human body.
Some people may not have any idea of what stem cells are, have any background knowledge on stem cells, or perhaps they have their own biased opinions. Stem cells have the potential to develop into many different cell types in the body. They can be classified as multipotent or pluripotent. If they are multipotent, they are restricted in capacity to differentiate. Multipotent stem cells are unspecialized cells. They can give rise to other types of cells but it is limited in its ability to differentiate. Examples of multipotent stems cells include those in the brain that give rise to different neural cells, glial, or haematopietic cells, which can give rise to different blood cells types, but they can’t create brain cells. Bone marrow also contains multipotent stem cells that give rise to all blood cells types but not other cells. Hence, adult stem cells are considered multipotent because their specialization potential is limited to one or more cell lines. They are found in the tissues of adult mammals (Explore Stem Cells, 2000-2001). They seem to be mostly found in body organs where they replace diseased or aged cells. These cells function to restore the body’s cells throughout their life.

Pluripotent stem cells, on the other hand, are adult cells that are genetically reprogrammed to an embryonic stem cell-like state by being forced to express genes and factors important to maintaining the defining properties of embryonic stem cells (Stem Cell Information, 2009). These stem cells are often categorized as being the “true” stem cells because they can distinguish into almost any cell in the body. This means that a stem cell that is isolated from an embryo can produce almost all cells in the human body. To understand the concept of how these cells can replace damaged cells, one must refer to the body in its early stages of life. After an egg is fertilized by a sperm, a single cell results. This fertilized egg is termed totipotent. They have the potential to replicate its original. These totipotent cells start to specialize and form a cluster of cells known as a blastocyst. The blastocyst divides into a smaller group of cells called the inner cell mass, which is what actually develops into a complete organism. This is where the embryonic stem cells are isolated from. The embryos are excess ones produced from in-vitro fertilization, but the practice is still controversial because it does destroy the embryo, which could have been implanted to create a baby (Explore Stem Cells, 2000-2001). Pluripotent cells, however, won’t help the placenta or other tissues during fetal development, but can still serve as a replacement for nerve and heart cells in the human body. These cells provide a chance to regain healthy cells and tissues to help treat a wide variety of diseases such as heart disease and diabetes. Other victims who may benefit from these types of stem cells are those who are burn patients or those who may suffer from an autoimmune disorder like Parkinson’s. Pluripotent stem cells are the most common type of stem cells because they give rise to nearly all cell types in the body including those of the heart, muscle, blood, and nerves. As you can see, stem cells can be derived from either an adult or from an embryo and their potential use will be determined from which they come from.
There are two different places in which stem cells can be derived: adult and embryonic. Adult stem cells have been found in many organs and tissues, including the brain, bone marrow, peripheral blood, blood vessels, skeletal muscle, skin, teeth, heart, gut, liver, ovarian epithelium in women, and testis in men. They are thought to reside in a specific area of each tissue called the stem cell niche. However, there are a very small number of stem cells available in each tissue and once removed from the body, their capacity to divide becomes limited making the generation of large quantities difficult (Stem Cell Information, 2010). In regards to embryonic stem cells,

these are taken from the inner mass cells in an embryo. These embryos are donated for research purposed with consent of the donors because they are in excess of those not used during in-vitro fertilization. These cells have the capability to differentiate into almost any type of cell, unlike the adult or multipotent stem cells. They can become heart muscle cells, blood cells, or nerve cells, etc… This is where most ethical concerns come into play because people feel that by using these extra embryos, is a form of abortion. But what they are failing to realize is, is that, these embryos are going to be discarded anyways, so why not try to invent a cure for some of these diseases and put them to use? Are pre-embryos included in the prohibition of abortions? There is a limitation to this. An embryo is not protected by the limitations on abortion until it is implanted in a woman. A pre-embryo left undisturbed in a test tube will die. It requires active interventions to even reach a situation in order for it to be true potential life. The alternative to this reasoning would be to argue that the killing of adult skin cells I forbidden, since a person could potentially be cloned from any cell in an adult’s body (Eisenberg, 2001). These stem cells, whether they are from adults or embryos, are proving to be a key in helping researchers find cures for many diseases. They can be used for various therapeutic purposes in patients with Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s disease, and other neurological disorders. They can repair damaged heart muscles, help patients with type I diabetes, and they can also be used as an alternative source of chemotherapy (Saxena, A, Singh, D, & Gupta, J., 2010). Cells within the central nervous system were once thought to be capable of regeneration. With the use of stem cells, those derived from bone marrow have been proven to aid in the repairing of neuronal and vascular phenotypes in an injured brain (Hess, D.C, & Borlongan, C.V., 2008). Stem cells are the root to an ongoing research in promising hopes for many who are affected with certain diseases that once were not curable. Who would have thought that these small, microscopic cells could hold such great power? Depending on where they are taken from, determines their ability and limitations to replacing certain damaged cells and tissues in particular areas of the body.

Stem cells hold a key for our future. By repairing and replacing damaged cells, these new cells will give hope to those who are unable to perform life as they once did. These cells have the power to become any type of cell they wish. With the advancement of stem cell therapy, regenerating new cells to replace the old, will hopefully make people with certain types of disease, live a longer, happier life. These cells are not just derived from embryonic stem cells, but they also come from various tissues in adult cells. These cells are powerful in aiding our future in the discovery we have once longed for.

...Summary 1 There are hundreds of different kinds of cells that form our body. They are all specialized and serve different functions. Some carry oxygen through our blood vessels and some transfer messages from our brains to the rest of the body. These specialized cells can no longer replicate themselves. But the stem cells can. Stem cells are unspecialized cells in our bodies that replace the malfunctioned or used up specialized cells. For instance, we make millions of new blood cells a day and they are generated from stem cells in the bone marrow. Stem cells has two options during their cell divisions. To make either two identical daughter stem cells or two specialized cells. Adult stem cells of a particular organ or tissue of our bodies can only make the cells of that tissue or organ. (E.g. the skin stem cells in our skin can only make skin cells.) The skin stem cells have already been applied to therapeutical uses. Such as skin burns. So far, we’ve only known that there are adult stem cells in blood, skin, guts and muscles. There are another kind of stem cells called the embryonic stem (ES) cells. They are only found in blastocysts, early stage embryos. These cells can be specialized into any kind of cell in our bodies. Our body signals and external stimulation guide these ES cells to differentiate into certain specialized cells.
