Stereotype threats are related to mathematics, it specially affects men and women. There are two different terms that affect the outcome of performance, stereotype threat and stereotype lift. Stereotype threat is the threat that other peoples judgments about a certain groups performance will cause that group to perform in a way that confirms the negative stereotype that’s believed about that group. Stereotype lift is causes the individual to perform much better than those exposed to negative stereotypes about other groups. Stereotype threat affects math performance.
Identify how and in what ways does it affect the performance because of the expectations for a women’s poor performance in math. It’s hypothesis that women will perform worse in …show more content…
Women are affected negatively and are vulnerable when told that women perform poorly in math whereas men try to prove that the statement is right. Another component to these results is the test anxiety and the arousal the two genders get from taking math test. The conclusion the researchers came up with when it comes to stereotype lift and how women perform better when put under that condition is the social identity. In order to make a greater impact in men they have to make sure that the social manipulation has to be stronger so there would be a bigger more significant effect for stereotype lift. They found for future research that although men do outperform women when in the stereotype threat condition nevertheless levels of arousal are still a factor and in order to get accurate and better statistics research should find a way to reduce such arousal. Also when women identify themselves without other social identities they tend to perform a lot better. They suggest that the stereotype vulnerable participants should be in more align with their identities. It is very clear that when using stereotype lift it can decrease the effect of stereotype threat. In simple words by lifting the stereotype threat the math performance will be a lot better.
There are some limitations they faced one of them was just the small sample size. Also the participants were not asked what they were majoring in. they also got participant females from a university that was consequently smarted which meant that they couldn’t necessarily generalize to the population.
