Man or women? This was a common question asked after only a brief look at Jess Goldberg, the protagonist in Leslie Feinberg’s novel Stone Butch Blues. Each person is born to a specific sex, male or female. Some people in society stray from the norms and become gender variant. Jess’s gender variant life style along with her religion, Judaism, paved the way for an extremely difficult and confusing upbringing. Throughout the novel, Jess encounters many situations that make her uncomfortable due to the ignorance of most of those around her. Jess’s endeavors as a gender variant female allows Feinberg to appeal to the readers emotions, by portraying the obstacles and misconceptions she encounters on a daily basis. Secondly, in the women’s clinic Feinberg introduces the doctor who establishes some type of hope in what seemed to be a hopeless environment. Finally, Feinberg appeals to the reader’s understanding of how uneducated and untrained health and service professionals were at this time and place.

Emotions are something bred into humans reguardless of sex, race, ethnicity, or anything else. Jess has a roller coaster of emotions throughout the novel. Many of the reoccurring emotions occur at the womens clinic. Jess had an unsafe and uncontrollable irriation in her genital region. She sucked up her pride and went to a womens clinic where she wasn’t greeted with much respect. Jess is often misunderstood by the common eye, when Jess told the receptionist her reason for visiting was a vaginal infection, “the receptionist looked me up and down. Are you kidding me?” This causes Jess to feel embarresed and uncomfortable considered that she “debated leaving, but the itching and burning became worse every day.” When Jess answers the receptionist, not only did she get trouble from her, she also got an earloud from her surrounds peers. “Why can’t they just be crazy in their own place?” Jess is commonly humiliated due to the ignorance of those around her, everyone is there for the same reason, but due to her appearance only she gets verbally abused by those around her. Lastly, a fierce emotions coming from Jess is pure anger. “My anger ignited. Fuck you. I shouted” This scene shows how fed up Jess is with everything and her rage and anger causes her to speak violently to others.

...Jess Goldberg, the protagonist in Leslie Feinberg’s novel, Stone Butch Blues. Each person is born to a specific sex, male or female. Some people in society stray from the norms and become gender variant. Jess’s gender variant life style along with her religion, Judaism, paved the way for an extremely difficult and confusing upbringing. Jess is treated inferiorly upon entering the women’s clinic due to her gender variant qualities, which reflects unequal accessibility to healthcare during the mid and late 20th century. Jess’s endeavors as a gender variant female allow Feinberg to appeal to the readers’ emotions, by portraying the obstacles and misconceptions Jess encounters on a daily basis. Secondly, Feinberg appeals to the reader’s understanding of how uneducated and untrained healthcare professionals are at this time and place. Finally, in the women’s clinic, Feinberg introduces the doctor who establishes a glimmer of hope in a seemingly hopeless environment. Before continuing, it is essential to acknowledge that Feinberg, the author of the novel and mastermind behind the scene is more then qualified to illustrate the struggles that gender variant people endure due to the fact that she herself was a lesbian butch growing up in the 1960s and is a well known LGBT author and activist. Feinberg has published writings on LGBT history in the Workers World newspaper and also won the Lambda Literary Award for Stone Butch Blues. Feinberg establishes pathos by appealing to the readers’...

Review of Stone Butch Blues

...Jess and the other gender variant and transgender characters of the novel Stone Butch Blues are forced to face and endure a multitude of violent acts. The incessant and guaranteed nature of these events speaks to the society’s acceptance and, in many cases, support of the mistreatment of those who identify as anything but heterosexual. Although I do believe the novel does support Feinberg’s overall message that society’s gender categories should be broader and greater than male/female, the morose and despondent acceptance that trans-people display throughout the novel make it difficult for the reader to expect any positive changes among the gender variant and transgender community and how it is seen by society as a whole. In many scenes throughout the novel, Feinberg presents the static derision that the general public feels toward the non-heterosexual people through slanderous remarks and traumatic abuse. In many instances, Feinberg creates scenes in which Jess and the other LGBTQ characters are imperiled with malicious libel as well as assault by strangers. What makes for an even more pessimistic display of society are the innocent bystanders that fail to intervene, even in cases where they believe the mistreatment is wrong. During one scene, Feinberg places Jess in a situation where she is confronted by a group of strangers at a pizzeria who assault her and destroy her motorcycle. “One of the guys blocked the only exit. I pushed past him real hard and ran outside to...

Conformity: a Concealed Identity

...Concealed Identity Society is made up of predominately heterosexual people. Our instincts tell us in order to repopulate the world; a man and a woman must reproduce offspring. This is considered to be a social norm; mankind’s very survival depends on it. More recently, society has given people the ability to express themselves in ways they never thought possible. The American Gay Rights Movement in 1924 sparked animosity throughout the nation creating discrimination toward the gay community. This movement brought about significant change; unfortunately, not all people were willing to accept it. People’s resistance to change is usually based on ignorance or the desire to conform in an attempt to avoid becoming an outcast. In the novel, Stone Butch Blues, written by Leslie Feinberg, Jess Goldberg becomes an outcast because of her resistance to conformity. Since Jess was brought up in a straight environment, she grew up confused, without the understanding of her true nature. Her parents rejected her differences due to the fact that they were so focused on society’s view of the social norm. Having no one to confide in, Jess was forced to set out on her own to find people she could connect with and help her to explore identity. This book demonstrates both society’s demand for conformity and the pressures that queer people face in an unjust world; Jess’ success in battling this social pressure inspires people to fight against discrimination and to ensure their pursuit of happiness. ...

Blue-eyed soul -> R&B / Soul performed by white artists, this music has a really nice vibe. Pop rock -> Mix of a catchy pop style and guitar-based rock. [Target group] In my opinion, there is not one specific target group for this album, just like the other three albums of DeGraw. He has a voice that is attractive for a lot of people. Teenage girls and boys, 20-30 year olds, and even 50 year olds like his voice and music. His album is a mix of blue-eyed soul and pop rock, I think that that’s also a reason why it is attractive to more than one target group. His tour concert in Amsterdam was totally sold out, so that means that a lot of people are interested and a fan of his music. [Period] The album is released on September 20, 2011. In my opinion, the album is timeless, but that is because I really like his sound, but someone who likes heavy metal might think that it is not timeless. The genre of the album is blue-eyed soul and pop rock, which means that it is not limited to this specific...
