To begin, The Stono Slave Rebellion was the most monumental rebellion organized by slaves against slave owners. The Stono Rebellion took place during the time of colonial history of the United States. The Stono Rebellion occurred in 1739 near the Stono River in South Carolina. To provide a better understanding, the Stono Rebellion was an uprising of slaves who were involved in a march towards freedom, before being defeated by the militia. Although the rebellion was documented via first and second hand reports originally written by Caucasians, two differing accounts of the Stono Slave Rebellion took place. Subsequently, what was believed to be the actual slave’s perspective was passed down to the family of the late slave Cato, who led the Stono Rebellion. The slave’s perspective demonstrates a situation described from a very informal yet gratifying stance. For example, included in the slave’s perspective was the following comment “As it come down to me, I thinks de first Cato take a darin’chance on losin’his life, not so much for his own benefit as it was to help others”. This comment alone demonstrates esteem despite the unfortunate happenings. The slave’s perspective also confirmed the fact that the slaves were aiming towards their escape to freedom. “Long befo’ dis uprisin’, de Cato slave wrote passes for slaves and do all he can to send them to freedom”. The slaves were convinced that a rebellion would allow for them to reach Spanish Florida where they would've been granted freedom. The revolt organized by leader Cato (a literate slave), gathered up multiple slaves and proceeded south while gaining more slaves along the way.
