...Poetry Essay: "Storm Warnings" & "Diving into the Wreck" In "Storm Warnings," and "Diving into the Wreck," by Adrienne Rich, both have the same idea of creating a place of sanction and comfort. The main lesson to learn from both of these poems is that one must create a place of sanctuary, where one can go back and look back on the past, and finally they learn to move on rather than to try fighting it. Specifically in "Storm Warnings," the narrator is comparing her emotions to the storm brewing outside. To illustrate, "weather abroad and weather in the heart alike come on regardless of prediction," literally means the weather is unpredictable. Also, it means that a person's emotional long haul is hanging by a thread and is erratic. Furthermore, the poem goes on saying that no matter what, you cannot change the weather, "Which clocks and weatherglasses cannot alter." Which just goes on to say that the person will have to come into reference with their emotions, and settle all the little issues. For example, the weather, pain, and sadness you feel inside you can be pretty unpredictable and can surprise you when you aren't careful. ...Response for “Storm Warning” by Adrienne Rich I chose the poem "Storm Warnings," by Adrienne Rich because I find her poems are sometimes personally relatable. Although, Rich tends to use many metaphors and literal meanings throughout her poems to convey her ideas it is easy to understand what it is she is trying to express. This poem is rather short and is written in four stanzas with twenty-eight lines in total it uses every line to convey the speaker’s thoughts. Although the speaker is talking about a “literal” storm, what she is really talking about are her internal and emotional struggles or conflicts. In the first stanza, the speaker is aware of the impending storm because of “the glass falling all afternoon” (Rich, Line 1) and she is preparing for a storm to approach when she states that she “leave the book upon a pillowed chair / And walk from window to closed window” (5-6). This stanza helps the reader understand how the speaker begins her comparisons of the literal storm to the “emotional” storm she herself is experiencing at that moment. Rich uses the second stanza to convey to the reader from where the storm is approaching and that it does not much matter because whether or not it was forecasted or predicted; the storm will still come even when unexpected. Based on the repercussion of this storm alone, the county felt a mitigation system was needed to help protect its 2 million residents. To help reduce the effects of storms the county chose to start a weather radio distribution and education project in 1998. This weather radio mitigation project installed national oceanic and atmospheric administration weather radios in every school, hospital, and nursing care facility in the county. This totaled 860 radios throughout these facilities. Included in the mitigation process was an education/training program. Employees of these facilities learned how to plan and prepare for severe weather. This day of education/training was video taped to share with other county facilities and to be used as a state wide example. Also, the mitigation process was funded by the HMGP and the local community. The total cost of installing radios and the education/training day was $21,000. This mitigation program is great to help our children, the sick, and elderly during severe storms. The radio system will give schools, hospitals, nursing care facilities a better warning system for severe storms.
