Strength and Conditioning: How Does it Benefit Athletes?
Did you know that people who don't condition lose as much as 80% of muscular strength by the age of 50? (collegesports.com) Strength and conditioning is important for any person, but it is especially important for athletes. Pro and college athletes spend between 12 and 15 hours each week just strength and conditioning during their off season. (money.cnn.com) This doesn't include the 5-6 hours a week during the season too. When someone conditions their body, they are increasing their aerobic capacity, burning fat and increasing their muscle tone. But why is it important for athletes to participate in off season strength and conditioning? Improvements in both fitness and sports skills, self-confidence and injury prevention are just a few of the benefits athletes get from conditioning.
Conditioning helps with the overall fitness of your body. It is one big domino effect when you take time to condition. It all starts with developing strong bones and managing your weight. Most sports injuries begin at the beginning of the season when athletes are likely out of shape. Doing sport-specific training is important, especially for young athletes, for the purpose of conditioning the muscles that will be used the most. With proper conditioning, it has been shown to prevent major injures such as ACL injures.
