Concepts of inequality and structural violence is advanced by Farmer in his work, Infections and Inequalities: The Modern Plagues. The structural violence argument made by Farmer suggests history, geography, and biological contexts, considering the nature of structural violence in Haiti, farmer argues that these things are needed in research on structural violence. Farmer states that structural violence has a direct correlation with racism, slavery, and social and gender inequalities, using the case studies of tuberculosis and HIV as two diseases that kill the poor disproportionately.
