Critique 2nd Response Paragraph I also agree with the author that instructors in American Universities tend to give high grades to students to avoid conflicts with them and their parents because of student entitlement and parents who accept nothing but the best. Student entitlement has been a direct reason for instructors to fall in the “fear” zone of giving low grades, since students who are getting C grade or lower believe that the problem is the teacher and not them so they start their own “war” with professors. Marshall Grossman, an English Professor at the University of Maryland says: “Many students come in with the conviction that they’ve worked hard and deserve a higher mark, Some assert that they have never gotten a grade as low as this before.” He also adds: “I tell my classes that if they just do what they are supposed to do and meet the standard requirements, that they will earn a C, that is the default grade. They see the default grade as an A.” Another English Professor at Cuyahoga Community College in Cleveland, Brian P. Hall, tells the story of a student in his developmental-English course who came to his office in the middle of the semester to tell him that he had to withdraw and that it was his fault. The student said he couldn't continue because Prof. Brian’s teaching style didn't meet his needs. The second reason, which is indirect, is the role of parents. Parents, if not all then at least 50% of them, put pressure on their children to do good in school or university which puts the teenager in a situation where he starts to

Entitlement in the Younger Generations

...Entitlement is the greatest problem facing today’s generation and should be fixed by educating parents of the importance of giving criticism to their children and teaching the children greater responsibility and good work habits that may influence their decisions later on in their lives. Major disputes of today’s generation are laziness, disrespectfulness, and self entitlement. Laziness is the quality of being disobliging to work or use energy. Disrespectfulness is the quality of being disrespectful. Self entitlement is when one postulates that they have a conscientious to something. There are many nicknames for today’s generation; for example, the “Me, Me, Me” generation or the millennials. The “Me, Me, Me” Generation is a generation that concludes that they do not have to perform anything whether at work or at school. Their idea of “at least I showed up” is a mentality that affects our government dramatically. Therefore, a great deal of people in this generation are approaching welfare because they are unemployed dropouts that cannot find a job. Welfare was designed to be for the people who are unemployed because of a major injury, people that cannot find a profession, and people that cannot foster themselves or their family. An example of a thought process from the Me Me Me generation, also known as generation entitlement or generation “E”, is quoted below: “I got part of a programming degree before the bottom fell out of the tech industry and all of an AS in electrical...

Ethical Issues in Tazreen Garment

...2.0. Overview on Tazreen Garment: Tazreen fashion opened in 2009. It employed 1,630 workers and produced T-shirts, polo shirts and jackets for various companies and organizations. These included the US Marines, the Dutch company C&A, the American company Walmart and the Hong Kong based company Li & Fung. The factory is part of The Tuba group which is a major exporter of garments from Bangladesh into the U.S., Germany, France, Italy and the Netherlands, whose major clients include Walmart, Carrefour and IKEA. Tazreen factory was flagged in May 2011 with an "orange" grade by a Walmart ethical sourcing official for "violations and/or conditions which were deemed to be high risk". The notice said that any factory receiving three "orange" grade assessments in a two year time period would not receive Walmart orders for one year. The orange rating was the first the company had received, and was followed by a "yellow" medium risk rating the next August, which pertained to the factory where the fire occurred. Tazreen would not agree to pay the higher cost, as such improvements in electrical and fire safety would be a "very extensive and costly modification" and that "it is not financially feasible for the brands to make such investments”. 3.0. Tazreen Fire Accident: On 24 November 2012, in the Tazreen Fashion factory in the Ashulia district on the outskirts of Dhaka, Bangladesh. At least 117 people were confirmed dead in the fire, and over 200 were injured, making it...

Redistribution's Effect on the Dollar

...By: XVR Mrs. ---confidential-- Task 1: Cause Entitlement and Redistribution/Effect: decay of the value of the dollar There comes a time when financing a nation becomes too much for the business sector to handle, and the nation’s debt begins to weigh down on it like increasing gravity. When something like this happens, the first and most illogical choice of action is raising taxes. Despite the failure of this measure, the government is almost always convinced that throwing money on the problem fixes thins, usually in the forms of stimulus plans and redistribution ploys that always have a negative effect on a growing economy. As a result, there is no oversight in monitoring the flow of money, so even though they don’t say it, it is apparent that the money just disappears. Since this money has no way of being followed, it creates an enormous amount of strain on budgets and accounts, that there is no possible way to finance this. Many programs have people hooked onto the government for dependency and support, and this money comes from the taxpayers straight to these government partakers and never sees a return from it. Without responsibility on all fronts, there is no way to guarantee a revenue stream for a nation, and without one there can be no protection from recession. The saving grace of being responsible is the radically fast turnaround rate the enacted changes make when they are put into play. Entitlements, a driving force in determining this nation’s...

...Patrick Miller English Comp Entitlements As students we feel entitled to certain things. We pay for classes that we have certain expectations of what we will gain and expect to be provided with when teachers require things certain ways. What we as individuals feel as entitlements generally varies from person to person, however there are some that are commonly agreed upon as definite rights. Students are completely, and without question, entitled to information. By the very definition of student we must be allowed access to information to learn and further our education. As students we are also entitled to access to the tools needed for our education. For example as a student writer I am entitled to access to the library for any books I need to check out for my class and assignments. I am also entitled to access to the computer stations on campus because the teacher requires typed and printed assignments and cannot be expected to buy the means to do this as this education is not free for me. As an individual what I feel are my entitlements not only line up with the entitlements previously mentioned but extend beyond them. I feel as an individual I am entitled to a certain level of forgiveness for such things as assignments when it comes to factors that are out my control. I also feel that I am entitled to be respected as an individual and not ask of in ways that are not possible of a student that has a job. Whether someone is a student or just another individual we all...

Rewards and Challenges

...and the ability hold my tongue and temper. 3. What is your philosophy of education? EVERY student is capable of success, you just have to meet any outlying needs first. 4. What is your approach to classroom management? Don’t try to be a friend to your students. Start the year off more strict than you are comfortable being, and you will find you can ease up little by little as time goes on, once expectations have been learned and achieved. Students thrive when they have structure. 5. How do you modify your teaching to help struggling students? I use any and every recourse available to me. I often ask for advice from other teachers and staff. I even talk to family and friends while being discreet, because sometimes it helps to have a perspective from outside the classroom. I still refer to my old college textbooks, and the internet is a wonder of ideas when I have exhausted every option. My best modifications have come from students themselves. I frequently remind them I am not perfect, but am constantly trying to improve, and do they have any suggestions. 6. What are some challenges you face when dealing with parents? The biggest recurring struggle I have with some parents is trying to help them understand that giving their child a grade or score that is undeserved will not help them, but actually harm them in the long run. Overcoming apathy, laziness and entitlement in students is very difficult, but it is even harder to convince some parents that their child is anything...

Personal Responsibility

...Personal Responsibility How does one obtain the good life of the rich and famous? Where one does not have to worry about anything, everything is handed to them. He or she will want for nothing and definitely will only be responsible for getting up out of bed; oh, wait that is the life of a four- year-old. Many of to days students believe that they are entitled to everything and do not want to take the personal responsibility of their actions to achieve anything. An article in the American journal of pharmaceutical education, according to Smith, Cain, Romanelli, (2012) they write about Higher education literature, both peer-reviewed and popular press, is replete with accounts of faculty disgruntlement over some students' seemingly consumerist attitudes toward education. Common complaints include references to students who expect faculty members to actively cater to their desires and meet their demands for an education that is convenient to them and requires little to no effort. Students' lack of personal responsibility for their own education is a common and contemporary theme expressed by faculty members. Does the average student think about what personal responsibility is? Personal responsibility, it starts by respecting ones-self and others. To take responsibility for ones-self, keeping a strong focus on setting goals and having the discipline to go after them. I know that with a good sense of personal responsibility there is not much that I can-not accomplish or be successful...

...consciousness of the world, and this lays a foundation upon which an enlightened planetary civilization can be built." (Palmer, 1999) Personal responsibility means that you are willing to take responsibility for your actions, and are willing to accept the consequences whatever they should be. There are always outside forces that try to get in the way of our own college successes. The duties from family, work health as well as social can be a great interference when it comes making the right choices and taking responsibility. As a new college student most students will experience a new level of freedom. No longer are they living in their parents' home with their rules. They also no longer have somebody to monitor their comings and goings, and who they associate with. There is nobody that will wake you up to make sure that you are attending classes on time or that you complete your assignments. It is now up to the student. The lack of responsibility starts at an early age...

Sds Movement

...Ever since its inception in Ancient Greece, liberal education has afforded its students a truth for new understanding, that makes them well-rounded citizens. In terms of the American education system when it reached its pinnacle in the 1950s, its course was just as quickly reversed in the 1960s. A major culprit in the degradation of higher learning can be shouldered by Students for Democratic Society(SDS).To understand how these events came to be, we must first look at the values/objective of this very organization that came to be at the turn of the decade in 1960 at University of Michigan and Cornell University. Liberal education gives a liberating and freedom that is meant to be worth to educate the person in order to take part in civic life, as a future citizen. The ASEAN the Association of American Colleges and Universities states that a liberal education is that which liberates the mind from ignorance and cultivate social responsibility. Liberal education, unlike vocation is not to train, but to change people. Liberal education allows the student to learn how to think rather than what to think, to have a philosophical understanding wanting to question the reason of being and teaching. A liberal educated person is one that can think outside the box and question the norms of nature. They are free-thinkers.Failure in the closing of the American mind is the failure to have a basic principle of ideas and classic works that contributes to literature, politics etc to educate men...
