...Rebecca Schwartz Professor John Connor Arguments & Persuasion 23 February 2013 How Students Feel About Texting And Driving New Jersey has a Cell Phone & Driving law that affects all of its citizens. This law attempts to make the road a safer place, so it affects the lives of pedestrians and those who don’t own cell phones too, because everyone is in danger when a driver isn’t paying attention. In my Argument and Persuasion course, we are discussing this Cell Phone & Driving law, causing the class to take different sides. As opinions become more and more divided, I realize that this issue is very controversial. The New Jersey Cell Phone Law prohibits drivers from using handheld phones while driving. You may, however, use a speakerphone, a Bluetooth, a headset, or install a car kit. If you are caught using your cell phone while driving, you will be fined 100 dollars, and it is a “primary law” meaning that the officer doesn’t need a reason other than seeing your cell phone out to pull you over. Personally, I feel that the 100-dollar fine is too lenient. I have a friend who recently had his car towed out of a parking lot, and was fined 100 dollars, the same amount for using your cell phone and driving. I don't think the fine should be the same for something that is potentially life threating and something that is not. I think the fine should be between $500 and $1000. ...Syracuse had informed his students that if he caught any one of them texting or any other kind of misconduct; that he would leave the classroom. With that said, one of the students that sat in the front row of the classroom was caught texting. Once the professor saw, he immediately walked out of the classroom without a word said. Later on emailing his students, explaining to some extend why he left as well as leaving some comments that students found controversial. It was wrong of the professor to leave the classroom and cancel classes just because of some small issue. In the professor’s email that he sent to his students, he stated that the student whom sent the text message in class was Cuban. And that two other Latino students that had started playing tic-tac-toe in class the year before. By stating the fact that in both incidents where he has walked out on the class, it has been because of Latino students. This shows that the professor might have a bias feel towards Latino students. Racism is being showed against a certain race; even though he states that he is a “minority scholar himself”. Thomas also says that he is both black and Jewish although he does “not have the Jewish look”. There was no reason for the professor to state that the students are Latinos, unless he has a racial issue towards them. Thomas could have handled the issue in a much different way. When I entered the classroom I noticed that the students were up and about getting things and talking to each other. I thought they were gathering their things to attend the performance that I had stood in the front office for earlier. I introduced myself and explained why I was there and took my place in the back of the classroom. During our conversation she informed me that she was a more “modern” or “new age” style teacher. She said that she really didn’t have any classroom rules and that the students could do whatever they wanted…as long as it was school related. I thought to myself, “This is going to be very interesting”! As I observed the room I noticed how bright and vivid it was. It was very inviting, and the best thing of all was that it was decorated with the children’s artwork and handmade crafts.
