Study Skills Essay

I have chosen to study about Diabetes as I think it is important that everyone is aware of this disease. In the past year the amount of people diagnosed with Diabetes has risen to 2.8 million people, an increase of more than 150,000 people in a year. This means that one in twenty of the UK population now has Diabetes. (Diabetes UK, 2010). From my experience, working as a health care assistant on a ward in a local hospital trust, I have first hand knowledge that you could be caring for a number of patients with Diabetes at one time.

In this essay I shall be exploring different methods of study skills for my chosen topic. For each study skill that I have chosen, I shall explain why that method was selected, what I found useful and what did not help in increasing my knowledge of this subject. I shall demonstrate how I used a learning styles questionnaire to determine what type of learner I am. I will do this by describing the questionnaire and I shall explain how I used the information to increase my learning. How I managed my time to study effectively around university and placement will also be discussed.

To prepare myself for writing this essay, I decided to discover what my learning style was in a study skills guide recommended by the university. There were four different learning styles and to help you decide which one you were there was a list of the characteristics, learning strengths and the areas that the individual needed to develop to enhance their learning. I decided that I was the Dreamer. The Dreamer is a person that thinks a lot about the topic, likes to research everything thoroughly, likes to delay starting the task and time goes quickly without the person realising. (Cottrell, 2003). I knew I needed to make my learning more effective as I had been studying but without any results. I decided to set myself targets to achieve and sit down for two hours each evening to focus on learning and writing my essay. I also prepared my work area and made sure I had all the equipment I would need. After a week of this routine I realised it was working and I was achieving my goals each evening.

After reading the study guide, I considered my note making would be more effective following the advice given. Before reading the guide I would write everything word for word from books and in lectures from the power points. From the information given in the guide I started using different colours for different sections, which helped the information to stand out. I wrote in abbreviations that I would understand and in my own words to make it more understandable when I re-read the information at a later date. I also drew spider diagrams for keywords. (Cottrell, 2003). After using this technique for two weeks I found I was remembering more than before and also my notes were easier to read. I shall keep using this technique through university and when I am a qualified nurse as it will help me when I am in handover and when speaking to the doctors.

Using the library database to search for texts on Diabetes, I found several on the disease which proved to be useful. Firstly I wanted to find out what Diabetes was. After reading through the different books I came to the conclusion that Diabetes Mellitus was a metabolic disorder that resulted in a high concentration of glucose in the blood. (Handbook of Diabetes, 1999). I found that the text books I used were all very similar in the depth of the subject I wanted to study but very different in the layout and presentation of the information. Some of the textbooks used diagrams to explain what happened in the body due to Diabetes. I found this very useful as I retained the information for longer when it was in a diagram format as I could visualise what was happening in the body. I used textbooks as a source of information as they are more accurate than other sources such as the internet. The disadvantage of using textbooks is that the information can be outdated by the time it has been published as the process can take many years. (Cottrell, 2003). The use of textbooks is very effective in finding information as they contain everything you need to know about Diabetes. The use of the index also makes it a lot easier to find certain information that you need. In the future I would choose fewer textbooks to read and focus on maybe only two or three so that I do not spend valuable time reading many books that contain the same information.

As a Diabetic, my partner was given an information pack from his Doctor to help him understand and control his Diabetes. The Information and Resource Pack was developed in Worthing by the multi-disciplinary team from the Diabetes Working Group. The aim of the pack is to help the Diabetic control their Diabetes on a daily basis and to give them the information so that they know when and how to ask for help from a health care professional. It was also created to educate the Diabetic of the variety of services and support available to them. (My Diabetes: Information and Resource Pack, n.d). The first section of the resource pack explains what Diabetes is and the different types of Diabetes. The second section of this pack is about the management of diabetes. It explains the different medications that can be prescribed for Diabetes and how to inject insulin correctly. This section also talks about healthy eating and the wrong food and drink to consume. The team have outlined the symptoms of a patient when they are hypoglycemic and how to treat them. Section three of the pack is about living with Diabetes especially when circumstances change such as becoming pregnant. Information is also included on dental care, operations which can affect Diabetes, employment restrictions and how to prepare for travelling abroad. Section four is about the different services that are available to a Diabetic such as the local Diabetes Centre, Podiatry, Dietetics and the Diabetic Eye Screening Service. I found most of the information in this pack very useful. Section one and two were the most interesting as they provided me with the information that I would need when caring for a Diabetic patient as a registered nurse such as the names of the different medications and the side effects that they can have. Knowledge and awareness of the symptoms presented by someone who is hypoglycemic will prove beneficial when managing the care of a Diabetic patient. The My Diabetes: Information & Resource Pack is a very good tool to use to teach someone about Diabetes as it does not overload you with too much information. The pack gives you all the information you need in a very simple form and if you want more information they give contact details for local Diabetes organisations. I chose to use this information pack as it is a brief introduction to Diabetes. It contains all the information I needed although it did not go into great depth about everything.

In order to provide another source of information on Diabetes, I used the following two websites: Diabetes UK and the NHS. These websites contain the same information but whilst the former is dedicated to Diabetes, the latter is a generic health website with a small section on the disease. Diabetes UK is the largest charitable organisation in the UK with one hundred and sixty thousand members. (Diabetes UK, 2010). The organisation fund research, hold campaigns and help people to come to terms with living with a disease. The website contains a wealth of information, including the causes and risk factors of the disease, a list of symptoms and the differences between type one and two Diabetes. (ibid, 2010). The website also uses animation to explain what happens in the body when a person has Diabetes. The short video really helps to visualise what is happening inside the body and how eating effects insulin levels. The NHS website (NHS, 2010) explains many health conditions and has an overview of what Diabetes is with an explanation of type one and two and a list of symptoms (hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia). The website also has information on the causes, diagnosis, treatment and what complications there could be with Diabetes such as kidney disease. The website also discusses how to live with Diabetes and how to minimise the risk of any complications. (ibid, 2010). Overall, I found both websites to be very useful. I would definitely use both of them again, especially the NHS website, to research other conditions.

During the process of writing this essay I have learnt that my learning is increased by watching videos. Watching the process of how the body is affected by a disease such as Diabetes really helps and I can remember the information days later. In future study I will still use textbooks and the internet to make notes but I shall also use videos to demonstrate and back up the information that I read. I consider I have improved my knowledge of studying. I feel more confident about note making and I have begun to develop a strategy to improve my learning technique. I have identified what technique is most effective in improving my knowledge as outlined above and shall be using this in future study. My knowledge of Diabetes has improved a great deal. I feel more confident talking about the subject and shall use my knowledge in the future when caring for a Diabetic patient. I consider that by improving my knowledge of Diabetes I shall be more confident when caring for Diabetic patients. I now know the symptoms when someone is having a hyperglycemic or hypoglycemic attack and will know how to respond to stabilise their blood sugar. I consider that I will be able to react quickly and effectively than I would have done prior to my study of Diabetes. I consider that the most useful resources I have used are the internet and the information pack. They were easy to access and contained all of the information I needed. The information was presented clearly and easy to find as it was presented in bullet points and under headings. Although the textbooks that I used were also a good source of information, I found it very time consuming reading through the several books that I chose. I think that in future study I shall only choose a couple of textbooks to use as this would be more effective due to most textbooks containing the same information.

I have learnt about what Diabetes is and its causes. I have learnt about the different types of Diabetes and how each one affects the body. I now know how Diabetes can affect the body as a whole such as the eyes, heart, kidneys and circulation. I consider myself to be more confident to care for a Diabetic patient now and understand how important it is to check their blood sugar regularly especially when feeling unwell. Overall my knowledge and confidence has grown about Diabetes.
