The book, “Life as We Knew It” by Susan Pfeffer, is a suspense-filled story that you just can’t stop reading. Through a series of journal entries, a 16-year-old girl, Miranda, describes her family’s struggle to survive when an asteroid hits the moon, knocking it out of its orbit closer to Earth. After the moon was knocked closer to Earth, it caused tsunamis, earthquakes, and volcanic eruptions all around the world. Their family, like many others, struggled to get food and water and did not have the electricity to help them stay warm or to contact any other family members. Sometimes there were short bursts of electricity lasting for at most 45 minutes. Throughout the book, there is a fierce winter caused by all the ash from the volcanic eruptions blocking out most of Earth’s sunlight, in which they have to live through. …show more content…
Miranda’s younger brother, Jonny, was secretly voted “most likely to live” by the rest of the family, so they deprived themselves to keep Jonny strong and healthy. Laura, Miranda’s mom, always takes great care of her family. For example, she always puts the lives of the family in front of her own by eating less than the rest of the family. The whole family suffered a lot, including a major sickness that was overcome by the hard work and care of Miranda, who was the only one not affected by the sickness. Also, they were all forced to live in one of the rooms in their house. They had to live in one room because the electric heater did not work and only the fire, which they had to watch 24/7, could keep the one room warm during the winter. The entire family could only survive the winter, lack of food and water, and the death of the people around them because they all worked together and did not give
