I simply couldn’t hold off reading, so I turn the page to the book’s final Jon chapter. It’s a chapter filled with tension and uncertainty due to the arrival of droves of wildings to the Wall, and on the chapter’s last page “For the Watch” happens. As Jon succumbed to his injuries, I threw my book across the room in a fit of rage and shock; cursing George for smashing his readers’ emotions. Ever since that time, I was looking forward to see that iconic book moment adapted to screen so that TV viewers would go through the same blood-boiling frustration (a reaction that has become a trademark of Game of Thrones). Finally, the moment arrived this week and it was equally brutal as the book counterpart. The show’s fifth season ended in a bang with the shocking and sad death of Jon Snow concluding an eventful finale that was filled with defeat, backstabbing, confrontations, and one particularly memorable atonement. One after the other, the brothers of the Night’s Watch buried their daggers in Jon. What an ugly and despicable betrayal that was! But what was uglier was their petty motivation. Their hatred towards the wildings blinded them and ripped them of any common sense. All Rights Reserved. 3675 THE ‘UNCANNY’ I It is only rarely that a psycho-analyst feels impelled to investigate the subject of aesthetics, even when aesthetics is understood to mean not merely the theory of beauty but the theory of the qualities of feeling. He works in other strata of mental life and has little to do with the subdued emotional impulses which, inhibited in their aims and dependent on a host of concurrent factors, usually furnish the material for the study of aesthetics. But it does occasionally happen that he has to interest himself in some particular province of that subject; and this province usually proves to be a rather remote one, and one which has been neglected in the specialist literature of aesthetics. The subject of the ‘uncanny’ is a province of this kind. It is undoubtedly related to what is frightening - to what arouses dread and horror; equally certainly, too, the word is not always used in a clearly definable sense, so that it tends to coincide with what excites fear in general.
