In the book “Rivers North of the Future,” David Cayley presents interviews which he conducted with Ivan Illich. According to this compilation of interviews, the foregrounding concept of Illichean thought is the claim that “the corruption of the best is the worst.” This concept is known as Corruption Theory, and will be referred to as such within this essay. To Illich, the “best” event in history is the Incarnation of God. When Jesus became man, He made possible a radical kind of love which extends beyond immediate family and close-knit communities. For example, the parable of the Good Samaritan demonstrates a love which defies human reason: compassion is shown to an enemy at a real personal cost. To Christians, this is the highest form of love,
