The battle of Stones River was the sixth deadliest battle of the civil war, with 24,645 casualties. This battle is also called the Second Battle of Murfreesboro. In this battle General Braxton Bragg had his troops in Tennessee to receive reinforcements from the defeat at Perryville in kentucky. The Union army of the Cumberland, led by Major General William Rosecrans was also in Tennessee resupplying. General Rosecrans had gotten orders to move in on the confederates, in late December he moved in south. The Union and Confederates met along Stones River, north of Murfreesboro.
