Narrator: “There was once when my mother told me of many stories. Stories that were filled of excitement and mystery. I remember that there was a story about Irimu, an ugly ogre who deceived a pretty young girl by disguising himself as a handsome man. I just can’t remember what the ending of the story was. My mother has stopped telling such tales… I wonder, what was the ending all about?”
(John looks outside while Susana preparing the table. Stanley enters the scene)
John: “Father is coming mother.”
(John and Susana prepare the table and sit down. Stanley directly sit on his chair. They will eat for a while. Then John will stand up)
Stanley: “John, hei, John!”
John: “Baba…”
Stanley: “Come back… Sit down where are you going?”
John: “For a walk, Father.”
Stanley: “To the village?”
John: “Well…yes… no… I mean, nowhere in particular.”
(Stanley will look John very strictly. John will look away from Stanley)
Stanley: “Why do you look away? What have you done?”
John: “No-nothing, Father…”
Stanley: “When is the journey?”
John: “Next week, Tuesday...”
Stanley: “Right. Tomorrow we go to the shops, you hear?”
John: “Yes, Father.”
Stanley: “You can go.”
John: “Thank you, Father.”
(John will go to the door. Stanley will call John)

Stanley: “John!”
John: “Yes?”
Stanley: “You seem to be in a hurry. I don’t want to hear of you loitering in the village. I know young men… going to show off just because you are going away? I don’t want to hear of trouble in the village.”
John: “Yes, Father.”
(John will go out)

Cultural Aspect (Past and Present) The movie was about a tiny, solitary kappa marvelously survived in an earthquake over the last 200 years into modern day in Japan. Kappas are from the Edo period. Phonology is the system of sounds that languages have. There's a subset. There's a list, a finite list, of possible sounds that language can use. I'm going to put aside for the moment the question of sign languages and how they work. I'm going to talk about them in a little bit. The idea is that English has about forty of these phonemes. So, if you're a native monolingual speaker of English you hear speech and each sound you hear is categorized as falling into one of those forty morphemes — sorry, phonemes. So, for example, English has a phoneme of "lu," "l," and a phoneme of "r." And so, an English speaker can hear the difference between "lip" and "rip" and that corresponds to two different words in English. Other languages don't have that distinction and so those distinctions are very difficult for non-native English speakers to learn. So, part of what goes on when you learn, is you have to learn the language — the phonemes that your language has.
