To be given the opportunity to participate in the Summer Research EXperience six week program at the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV), would provide me with opportunities not only for the course of six weeks, but for weeks to come. This Summer Research EXperience six week program would provide me with opportunities to continue on with my higher education. It would also provide me with opportunities after I've completed my higher education. With that being said, it would be an experience that would be embedded into my mind throughout my physical/biological Anthropology occupation position. In order for me to be a part of such a position, previous experience would allow me to do my position the best to my ability.

In April 2008, a tragic situation developed with one of our colleagues. Brian Johnson, a member of our IT team, was diagnosed with a life-threatening liver condition and requires a kidney transplant. Miraculously, a suitable donor was found. Brian has health insurance that will cover his part of the operation, but the donor does not have health insurance. Our company has decided to help Brian and his family raise the $100,000 dollars necessary for the transplant operation to take place. Service Requirements and characteristics: We have decided to implement four different programs to raise money. First, we will have a capital campaign designed to solicit monetary donations. Second, we will organize a soccer tournament open to employees, along with their friends and family. Third, we will work with a food catalog company such as Charles Chips and pass out catalogs with items that can be ordered. (A percentage of catalog sales come back to us.) Depression and Excercise

...Exercise Exercise as a Successful Treatment for Depression LIB100, Write Your Class Section Here Student’s Name Professor Kahn Summer 2011 Topic: Exercise as a Successful Treatment for Depression Thesis statement: Moderately strenuous exercise performed three times a week for forty-five minutes to an hour can relieve moderate depression. Similarly, moderately strenuous exercise performed for thirty minutes three to five times a week may help relieve severe depression. Search strategy and evaluation of resources: I began my research about treating depression through the use of exercise by performing a keyword search for the words depression exercise in the Gale Virtual Reference Library which I accessed through the ASA Library Dabases and eBooks. I chose an entry about how exercise can successfully treat depression from the Gale Encyclopedia of Medicine because this is a subject specific encyclopedia that provides background information about medical topics. The entry was written by L. Fleming Fallon, a Professor of Public Health at Bowling Green State University making him an authority on medical issues. The entry was written in 2002, making it relatively current. This entry supports my assertion that exercise can be used as a treatment for depression. Next, I searched the Medline Database for articles about depression and exercise by inputting the words depression AND exercise. I decided to read an article titled Clinical Inquiries: Does exercise...

Childhood Obesity

...Biology of Health and Disease | Childhood Obesity | Healthy Choices | | The book entitled Your Child by David Pruitt, MD. focuses on the increase of childhood obesity in the United States. The book explains that between 16 and 33 percent of children and adolescents are obese. Obesity is among the easiest medical conditions to recognize but most difficult to treat. Unhealthy weight gain due to poor diet and lack of exercise is responsible for over 300,000 deaths each year. The annual cost to society for obesity is estimated at nearly $100 billion. Overweight children are much more likely to become overweight adults unless they adopt and maintain healthier patterns of eating and exercise (David Pruitt, 1998). The causes and risk factors associated with childhood obesity are discussed in an article by the NIH (National Institutes of Health) entitled Healthy Weight, Healthy Child, which cites poor eating habits, overeating, binge eating, and lack of exercise as the leading cause of unhealthy weights among children and adolescents. There are many societal factors that contribute to childhood obesity. Poor eating habits can be learned, but are also the result of poor socioeconomic factors. Fast foods are not only easier, but cheaper. The cost of a cheesburger and french fries is marginal and can be purchased in a matter of miutes, compaired to the time and cost of a sit-down meal prepared at home...

Asthma

...According to the information in the Encarta encyclopedia, many Americans, besides me, have asthma and that number has increased dramatically in the last 20 years. “ More than 17 million Americans suffer from asthma, with nearly 5 million cases occurring in children under age 18. In the United States, asthma causes 5,500 deaths each year… Among all Americans, the prevalence of asthma increased more than 60 percent between 1982 and 1994.” (1) The management of asthma is a health issue for many people besides me. As a result of my research I have found that I can manage my asthma and live a full, active life by minimizing the effects of environmental factors that can trigger asthma episodes, following my physician’s instructions about medications and by sticking to an exercise program Numerous substances can trigger an asthma attack of coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath. Allergens constitute the largest category of triggers (Abramowicz). According to Susan Berg, “Allergens are substances that produce an allergic reaction in people who are sensitive to them.” Common allergens are pollens from plants, animal dander, dust mites, mold and mildew (23). Dr. Anders said we would do a series of skin tests for allergies right away. If I am allergic to certain triggers, allergy shots will help by desensitizing me to them, making them less likely to trigger an episode (Anders). If I am allergic to certain pollens, I can reduce the chances of an asthma episode by...

The Major Threes

...I knew I have always had an indecisive nature but I did not realize it would spill over into higher education. I never thought I’d be the one to say that I have switched my major two times, but I have: from Biology to Exercise and Sports Science to Nursing. Let me explain or better yet take you down the path of my college journey of majors. Before coming to this University, I set up goals into becoming a Dermatologist. I was very adamant about it, passion was at an all time high and knew everything I was supposed to do with help of a mentor. I was enrolled my freshman year as a Biology major. As you’ve heard, medical is really competitive and expensive so undergraduate grades must be in tip-top shape. With a semester of heart retching C’s, dreaded B’s, analysis of my work ethic and distractions I realized that I probably wouldn’t be able to handle the coursework Biology had to offer, my passion and drive was no longer sufficing. I indefinitely just wanted to appreciate my major and actually love it. Going into my second year, my desired course of major was Exercise and Sports Science with a concentration in Physical Therapy. The summer of 2014, the summer before my sophomore year here at Texas State, I went through a phase where I went to the gym or worked out any chance that I got. My body was my drawing board and I was in control of how I wanted it to look, not exactly feel and I liked that feeling. My body begun the chance intensely which developed my interest in bodily...

...Exercise 1 #1 Gasoline prices are always fluctuating at the pump, although demand has decreased with the availability of hybrids and electric cars, the prices seem to be impacted by global oil prices and the limited refinery capacity. According to USATODAY, “Refinery shutdowns and reduced production in California, Washington and Illinois caused both regional and national wholesale prices to surge before seasonal demand slumped in the fall.” (Strauss, 2012) One of the reasons for this fluctuation in gas prices is due to the price of crude oil. Crude oil prices account for 72% of gasoline and the remaining 28% comes from taxes. (Amadeo, 2013)There are also other reasons for this increase at the pump, decline in the value of the dollar, as well as, future exchanges. Traders will bid on the price of gasoline or future prices by what they think it will be in the future, this in turn makes them bid up. Because of this bidding up, it leads to higher prices at the pump. (Amadeo, 2013) Another reason for this rise is particularly due to the time of season as well. Traders know that the demand for gas will rise in the summer due to family vacations and increased travel. These traders begin buying oil in the spring in anticipation for the rise of gasoline. War and rising gasoline prices, of course we all have seen it happen, but whenever there is a conflict of some sort, the price of gasoline seems to go up. Just recently in the news Iran...
