...Sunday in the Park – analysis ”Sunday in the Park” is a short story revolving around an incident in a park, where two men almost get in a fight. One of the men is called Morton, and he is described as being very pale with glasses and a very pinched, lean face. He is the father of a three-year-old boy, so we can assume that he is comparatively young, although his behaviour seems more likely to belong to an older man. He is a professor at a university in the city, and the narrator in the story, who he is married to, seems to see a connection between his paleness and his job (p. 97 l. 11-12). According to her, he is extremely cooped up in the very factory-like, grey university. He seems to like The Times Magazine, which we can quickly associate with him being a professor. If we read a little between the lines, and observe the way he talks, some of his personal characteristics is that he is unobtrusive, reserved and much more verbal than physical. One sentence in the story almost sums up his entire personality; “He put his Times down carefully on his lap and turned his fine, lean face toward the man, smiling the shy, apologetic smile he might have offered a student in pointing out an error in his thinking. When he spoke to the man, it was with his usual reasonableness” (p. 98 l. 13-17). All of these words describe a person very opposite of the other man in the story, namely “the big man”. It follows her on a regular Sunday afternoon in the park, which she spends walking and sitting in the park. She sees the world as a play, if it were a stage, and enjoys watching the people around her, often judging them condescendingly and eavesdropping on the strangers. The reader learns that Miss Brill's life must be unfilled and this is how she develops her pride.[4] When she arrives at the park, she notices that there are more people than last Sunday, and the band is especially louder because the Season had commenced. Sitting next to her on the bench was an elderly couple. Their lack of conversation disappointed Miss Brill because she enjoys, "sitting in other people's lives just for a minute while they talked round her.[5] Watching others in the park, she notices that most of the people that sit on the benches are the same; the people are elderly, silent, idle, and appear as though they have come from a small dark place. A woman drops her violet roses, only to be picked up and returned by a young boy. The woman proceeds to dispose of them, and Miss Brill does not know if that is to be well-regarded. Soul Food Sunday is a bi-weekly event held on the first and third Sunday of each month from NOON- 4pm at Emerson Park Development Corporation (EPDC) here in East St. Louis. Our resident chef Kim McAfee, who also owns Heaven Sent Catering, cooks the amazing food. Soul Food Sunday is a dual ended event, EPDC & Heaven Sent Catering provides a place for people to come congregate after service and meet new people for an affordable price ($10) and in return EDPC takes those funds to help our students in need. Here at EPDC we help youth between the ages of 17-24 get a high school diploma, learn a trade, get a small stipend AND earn money for college. However because most of these underrepresented youth come to us with needs such as homelessness, hunger and single parenthood we have to use funds to assist with those issues. These ciclovías have been going on for over 10 years, and their success has incorporated other activities in the surrounding areas such as yoga lessons, aerobics and other types of entertainment (nytimes.com, 2008). Similar events have been held in Canada and have showed great success. These events were located in Winnipeg, Ottawa, Hamilton, Halifax and Vancouver. Ottawa has been holding their Sunday BikeDay Program since 1970. Their program closes 50 kilometers of roads every Sunday morning in the summer and has proven to be very successful. ...Sunday in the Park The text ”Sunday in the Park” mainly deals with the concerns of marriage, the individual roles of the partners in the relationship, and how you can be together for a long time, without noticing that some of the vital values are missing, from the person you love. I believe the characters in this text are victims of this very thing, where the mother realizes that her husband can't defend her in the way that she wants him to. She probably married him to feel safe and secure in a way, possibly financially since you have no knowledge of her actually having a job herself. In the park however, she wants her husband, Morton, to stand up for her and her son, even though she isn't a supporter of violence and knows that it'll end up with Morton getting hurt quite badly if he does stand up for them. As a result, she takes on the role of the family “guardian” since her husband proves too weak for it. You can see that in this last bit of the story: “But her voice stopped him. She was shocked to hear it, thin and cold and penetrating with contempt. “Indeed?” she heard herself say. “You and who else?” (P. 2, lines 139-141)” This shows how she basically mimics the menacing man in the park, who she more or less must see as a “real man,” compared to husband at least. You know the ones who dress inappropriate to their age and refuse to acknowledge that they are old. The Character Miss Brill in Katherine Mansfield’s story “Miss Brill” is an old lady who does not realize that she no longer is in the younger demographic and is in denial that she is the same as “The old people”. It seems that in her mind the older folks are invisible, “still as statues” and “odd, silent, nearly all old.” (par. 5) Miss Brill believes that she is a part of all that is transpiring around her. Even in the end, with reality crashing in on her, Miss Brill still finds a way to shelter herself from the truth that she has become invisible and insignificant to the world around her. Miss Brill denies to herself that she is the kind of person who is disliked in her story. Miss Brill appears to be an elderly woman who does not think that she is seen that way by others her round her. Reading the story I picture her wearing an old, nice dress, which does not entirely fit her.
