Chapter 11
Managing the Community Counseling Program This chapter was very insightful for me because it shows the step by step process that is required when organizing or managing a community program. I personally think that all this steps are indeed very necessary in order to take into consideration all of the aspects even prior to plan a community program, by taking into considerations the need of the community and what exactly would take to target that need. In this chapter the author emphasizes organization, which I completely agree is really the key to a well-structured organization where is encouraged to participate to the same mission or goal. For me this chapter that I read was very different than the ones that I had read before. This is because I cannot agree or disagree with the author since for me it was definitely a lot more informational than anything else. I think that if I ever had the opportunity to contribute in a new community program I think that I would definitely use this chapter as a reference in the step process to plan and manage an organization. One thing that did stood out from this chapter was the five components for an effective leadership. I like the fact that the author stresses the importance of every person involved for the contribution of the development of an organization. I learned that it is very important to have a solid mission statement that not only backs up the organization but directs it in the correct path. Another thing that stood out for me from this chapter was the person-process model supervision. For me this was new but makes perfect sense. I believe that it is important for a supervisor to understand the stage of development where the supervisee is, in order to further assist the supervisee grow more and help him/ her through their level of process. I liked how this model is explained in detail on page 282 and page

Those Winter Sundays-Hayden

...Priscilla Camarena Intro to Poetry Essay #1 When envisioning winter Sunday memories of hot cocoa, snowmen, and Christmas appear. However Robert Hayden’s poem Those Winter Sundays is quite the opposite. In fact it illustrates the lack of relationship between a father and son. It is through Hayden’s usage of techniques imagery and diction which allows for the regret and sense of loss felt by the narrator. Hayden’s subtlety in the poem forces it to be carefully read so that the reader may reflect on the misunderstandings of their own relationship with their parent. The first line provides a hint to the reader on who the narrator is, “Sundays too my father…” this can possibly be a father reminiscing. An adult is reminiscing on the strenuous relationship he had with his father. It can be inferred that the narrator is a male due to the narrator’s shoes being “polished.” Only men during those this period polished their shoes. “Speaking indifferently to him,” reflects a sense of male pride that may be impeding the development of their relationship. Sunday and the “polished good shoes,” can represent the Sabbath or the Catholic Church. It can even allude to the relationship between God and his son Jesus Christ who happens to be born during winter. The difficulty in Jesus Christ understanding the methods of his Father, God. Another allusion that can be made is through the word “chronic” that can represent the revolt between Zeus and his father Cronus. A tone of remorse and regret...

A Critical Analysis of Derek Walcott’s “a Lesson for This Sunday”

...Derek Walcott’s “A Lesson for this Sunday” is a steady buildup from a masculine persona lazily remarking a summer’s day; however it quickly turns to a source of annoyance as the cries of children shatter the reflective mirror of paradise leaving him introspective and critical of their actions as they destroy a part of nature. The poem in itself is melodic, not with a particular rhyme scheme however but with the way Walcott wove his words. The poem elicits a theme of deep introspection, contemplation, death and philosophy of human nature. “A Lesson for this Sunday”, aside from being the title is a window of opportunity to view the poem at face, but a second read foreshadows the end conclusion. The first stanza follows in painting a picture of a lazy and beautiful summer day, specifically a Sunday that the persona is enjoying “In scansion gentler than my hammock swings”. He uses derivatives of the word idle in the first and last lines of the stanza “The growing idleness of summer grass”, “Since I lie idling from the thought in things,” along with the lack of punctuation emphasizes just how easy going and relaxed it is. However, the tone shifts immediately as the reader encounters the second stanza, “Until I hear the cries Of two small children hunting yellow wings.” The persona is disturbed, shaken, pulled from his meditative mood by the sounds of these children chasing a butterfly. He states “Who break my Sabbath with the thought of sin.” They have ruined his day of rest, and...

Any Given Sunday

...Abstract I will talk about the movie Any Given Sunday in which Oliver Stone directed. I will talk about how Oliver Stone portrayed war on the screen onto the gridiron and into the world of professional football world. I will talk about how in the movie the owner Christina Pagniacci played by Cameron Diaz, does not see the players as people but as meat. How the business part makes her not feel for her employee's health or mental capacity and only looking at what they can do for me now. Any Given Sunday When I sat down and watched Any Given Sunday director Oliver Stone really brought out the realism in the football world. In the sport of football you have people eyes glued to the game either by television or in person. You have men and woman young or old watching this sport as a gladiator going at each other like there is no tomorrow. Oliver Stone also shows all the sides in how the game has changed from a true sport into a cut throat business. Where players and the doctors don’t care whether they may be permanently injured as long as they can make extra money in the process. Which the move shows the team doctor Harvey Mandrake played by James Woods clearing defensive end Luther 'Shark' Lavay played by Lawrence Taylor to play. Dr. Harvey knows that if he gets hit or is hit could kill him or be brain dead from all the concussions he has received in his career. He does not mind taking that risk because the only thing he needs is to get his tackles in order for him to...

Any Given Sunday

...Janet Salguero Aaron Hillyard Writing 121 Video Essay 13, March, 2014 Essay # 2– “Any Given Sunday” Football has always been one of America’s favorite past time sport, a sport that has been around for 145 years and a game that is a religion to some individuals. “No guts, No Glory!” I remember my high school couch always scream out into the stands and the team cheering that same chant into the battle field. Football is a very intense and dangerous sport that young men play to hold the glorious title of “Winner,” seizing the opportunity to show off all their incredible football skills. In the movie, “Any Given Sunday” there is a famous scene were Al Pacino the head couch, gives a common but important inspirational speech to get his team all riled up and ready for battle. Giving the opposing team a run for their money and fight for every last inch they need to get to be victorious in the game. In every great sports movie there is always that locker room scene that gets the team pumped up for the win or lose game, with inspirational heart pumping background music. Making you feel like you are right there in the locker room, living in the moment and thinking it’s all or nothing at that very instance. The head coach reaching into each individual player’s soul and heart giving them that push to leave everything on that field to give everything they have, like it was a life or death situation. How many times have you seen that famous locker room scene and how does it make...

Those Winter Days

...The poem titled "Those Winter Days" by Robert Hayden, the text from the Compact Literature (KIRSZNER & MANDELL), is about a hard working father who expresses the love he has for his son by doing simple things on a sunday morning. The poem is about a lonely father who wakes up on early on a sunday. Typically sunday is supposed to be a resting day, a day when you get to sleep in and relax but not this father. Regardless of that he wakes up early and does and with the hard labor that his hand have experienced throughout the weekday he *lyric poem, free verse *Two themes are love and ingratitude stanza1 Those Winter Sundays" tells about a father from his child's point of view. The first line "Sundays too my father got up early" (Hayden 1) indicates that the father wakes up early everyday, presumably part of his sacrifice to earn a living for his family as head of the household. The rest of the lines in the first stanza paint the picture of a father who, though it is still dark and though he is tired from working most of the week, tends to the fire - a task he takes upon himself and has never received gratitude for. stanza2 The second stanza describes the child getting up, first waking up to the cold then eventually being enveloped by the warmth of the house that his father started. In spite of the warmth, though, he is not eager to get out of bed but rather, tries to delay joining his father, "fearing the chronic angers of that house stanza3 Finally, the last...

In order to eliminate this new problem of increased costs, it will be necessary for our company to amend our existing store hours. To begin with, stores will now be closed on Sundays. Case Study

...THOSE WINTER SUNDAY: ANALYSIS The poem “Those Winter Sunday” by Robert Hayden has the general motif of appreciation using the imagery as one of its primary tools of supporting this motif. The poem was a manly a reflection of the speakers youth. during which the speaker talks about his youth and he/she explains his/her lack of understanding and appreciations of the depth his/her father went through in making sure that the speaker as well as the rest of his/hers family was well taken care of. During the speakers youth he/she held a lot of resentment toward the father, thinking that he/she was the cause of the hardship they faced. in the speakers present day and age the speaker never directly speaks of having its own family but was implied in the last stanza of the poem “love austere and lonely offices”[14]. “Sundays too my father got up early”[1] this first line especially the “Sunday” lets the readers know the depth his/her father worked. The father of the speaker even went as far as to work on Sunday a day that everyone presumably knows as a day of rest. Also letting us know how hard his father worked the speaker stated in the fourth line of the poem “from labor in the weekday weather mad” his father not only worked tireless through the weekday but also thru the weekend. With him working throughout the weekday and weekday the speaker father woke up early and “put his clothes on in the blue black cold” and with him doing this he often woke everyone else in the house causing...

...Sundays to me are a day of rest. I am a Christian and my religion is to attend church on Sundays and rest in the evenings. Now I’m not going to lie to you, I don’t attend church every single Sunday like I should but I make it when I am not working. I grew up with the tradition of going to church every Sunday but when I turned sixteen that all changed. I had a car and a job to pay for my car. I worked almost every Sunday because I had school during the week and I also played sports like football and rugby which packed my week and made it hard to work on weeknights. Since the age of sixteen I have gone to church on and off and barely at all. This repetitive behavior got me into a habit and when I went off to college I didn’t attend church a single day while I was in college. I was just living the college dream not worrying about a thing. At first it was okay but then it grew on me and especially my parents. They became angry with me and told me that I need to attend church as much as possible. So when I came back from winter break I began to go to church again. So you could say there was some leniency at first but then my parents began to crack down. Sundays have pretty much been the same throughout my entire life and in the end there was some change but not a lot. France has laws that create a day of rest on Sundays. No shops are allowed to be open and no one is allowed to work in their shops. This was made to create a day of rest filled with time for family. Many stores felt this...
