1.0 Introduction

Figure 1 :Sunway Group logo (Sunway Group, 2008)

Sunway Group began its operations as a tin-mining company in 1974, and has now become one of Malaysia’s most astonishing property-construction groups, with a multitude of established businesses spanning across 50 locations worldwide. Other than the core businesses of property and construction, the company has strategic investments in other businesses like trading and manufacturing, quarry, building materials, healthcare, education and real estate investment trust (REIT). Sunway REIT is recognized as one of Malaysia’s largest REITs with a portfolio of increasing assets that consists of retail, hotels and offices across Malaysia. They generate together synergies to Sunway’s core businesses and remain as important contributors to the Group’s bottom line. (Sunway.com.my, 2008).

The founder of Sunway Group is Tan Sri Dr. Jeffrey Cheah. He is currently the Chairman and sits on the board of the Federation of Public Listed Companies, The National Kidney Foundation, The Board of Trustees of the Malaysian Liver Foundation and the Malaysian Business Council. As of today, Sunway maintains property development and construction as its two core businesses and key contributors to profitability (Quazoo, 2009).

Event : Stop Hunger Now

2.0 Publicity

Figure 2 : Multiracial teamwork of Sunway Staff in Stop Hunger Now (The Star Online, 2014)

Publicity is defined as a type of advertising that relies on the public relations effect of a news story carried usually free by mass media. (BusinessDictionary.com, 2015). The main objective of publicity is not sales promotion, but creation of an image through editorial commentary. Every corporate needs publicity for their products and services. As for Sunway Group, they are active and robust in their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program.

During Sunway Group’s 40th Anniversary celebration in 2014, Sunway Group with one of their corporate social responsibility efforts called CARE (Community Aid, Reach-Out and Enrichment) project collaborated with United States-based Stop Hunger Now organization. Stop Hunger Now is a United States based international food relief agency that has been fulfilling its commitment to eradicate hunger for more than 15 years through the distribution of food and other life-saving aids to poor communities around the world.

In Malaysia, numerous corporations, organizations and schools have enjoyed organizing and participating in Stop Hunger Now meal packaging event (Stop Hunger Now Malaysia, 2014). Both of the organizations sponsored, packed and distributed meal packages to underprivileged communities in Malaysia to combat hunger. (Sunway C.A.R.E. PROJECTS, 2014)

The meal packaging program was carried out by more than 800 employees of the Sunway Group in across Peninsular Malaysia in Northern, Central and Southern region namely Penang, Ipoh, Kuala Lumpur and Johor Bahru. A total of 100,000 meals were packed to support the underprivileged communities (Sunway C.A.R.E. PROJECTS, 2014).

2.1 Target Publics and the impact of Stop Hunger Now

According to organizing Chairman Bernard Paul, the Stop Hunger Now Meal Packaging Programed did not only benefit the underprivileged but also provided staff a chance to be involved in charitable work. By doing this, Sunway corporation will definitely have a good impression by the society out there. (The Star Online, 2014)

On the other hand, Sunway donates to worthy as it helps to fight poverty and its image is often enhanced in the public’s perception. By doing charity, Sunway no longer considered as simply a profit seeking corporation but it helps when Sunway shows a commitment and concern for the community. It is important as many consumers make purchasing decisions based upon this quality.

2.2 Advantage of Stop Hunger Now

The biggest advantage to Sunway for organizing Stop Hunger Now is the increased visibility gained throughout the community. The increase visibility of Sunway leads to increased brand recognition throughout the community.

Regarding to Sunway participating in organizing the event of Stop Hunger Now is reflected in a good way as Sunway Group corporate adviser Tan Sri Ramon Navaratnam, praised the employees’ efforts in doing a goodwill and feeding the hungry. (The Star Online, 2014)

Tan Sri Ramon Navaratnam also mentioned about “Sunway’s core values of integrity, humility and excellence are values that Sunway hopes to inculcate in every Sunway staff and become entrenched in the organizational culture.”(The Star Online, 2014)

In addition, by promoting volunteerism, they hope to enhance employee engagement, which helps create unity, builds better bonds and enables employees to feel a sense of belonging to the organization that they work for. He also noted that the charity effort had also united people of different races and religions to help the poor (The Star Online, 2014).

2.3 Disadvantages of Stop Hunger Now

The possible disadvantage that could happen is that bad publicity can come in the wake of an exposed lie or inaccuracy. (Beauchamp, 2015) At times promoting is utilized to pump up organizations' abilities and purchasers' desires. Expectations can be carelessly overblown, revealed as false in the form of bad publicity and it will definitely lead to disappointment and a loss of trust.

At the point when an association neglects to complete guarantees, clients, workers and accomplices are more prone to question the truthfulness of all the association's present and future messages. Recovering trust can be troublesome and tedious. Doubt communicated by listening in on others' conversations and through online networking can take years to repair and frequently must be helped by the quantity of vocal supporters in the long run outnumbering the critics.

Public Relation Activity: Special Events
Event : LumiAir-Cirque Extraordinaire

3.0 Special Event

Figure 3 : Advertising board of LumiAir - a cirque extraordinaire (The News Straits Times, 2014)

Event management is a means for achieving publicity and recognition for their organizations and establishing and maintaining relationships with key constituents through direct contact. When executed well, event management can add greatly to the profile and prestige of organizations (Heath, 2005). In the year 2014, Sunway Lagoon became the host for a world-class cirque-style performance, LumiAir – A Cirque Extraordinaire. The ‘LumiAir-Cirque Extraordinaire’ was produced by Susan Porett who has 20 years of experience in many types of live shows and theatre entertainment (NST Online, 2014).

The event took place in Sunway Lagoon’s amphitheatre from November 29, 2014 to December 24, 2014 (The Sun Daily, 2014). By conducting the event for almost a month, the public will still be able to catch the event if they were not aware of the ongoing event in the earlier stage. As said by Gordon (2011), there needs to be enough time to get the word out to the people and it could take a few weeks to a year depending on the nature of the event. The more advance warning people have of what is happening, the more chance of achieving a good turnout. This event was the first time to be held in Malaysia, which had about 50,000 visitors in that period of time. Please refer to image 1 in the appendices for the full news cover by The Sun Daily.
3.1 Advantages of Special Event

An event formulated with the key objective of entertaining could be a hotel hosting a wine tasting and dinner to entertain major clients and/or to demonstrate its unique food and beverage facilities (with a view to generating future business) (Johnston and Zawawi, 2004). This special event was a collaboration with LumiAir to commemorate Sunway’s Group 40th anniversary. By having a collaboration with LumiAir, Sunway Group has created a bond with the corporation. They are able to expedite the production in the future if Sunway Group considers having another event that is associated with LumiAir.

As reported by Nadiah in the News Straits Times Online (2014), the performers featured in this event were international performers that came from France, Russia, Canada, Belarus and China. As said by Johnston and Zawawi (2004), in media terms, special events can be visual, provide human interest, spectacle or famous faces. Through such elements, they can become news and attract more customers.

For Lumiair, there was a combination of expertise between two choreographers, Anthony Ikin and Daniella Winter. Anthony Ikin is the current World Aerobics champion and has experience ranging from soloist at Paris’ Moulin Rouge to being a choreographic consultant for Gymnastics Australia while Daniella Winter, on the other hand was a choreographer for Australia’s Got Talent (The Sun Daily, 2014). This production was successful and it created a hype among the audiences as the choreographers did a great job and the dancers were skilful.

3.2 Disadvantages of Special Event

Events are an opportunity to make news, but if badly planned or lacking in a good creative angle, the media will not be interested in them or could even backfire, causing negative publicity. (Johnston and Zawawi, 2004). The management did a great job in handling LumiAir and making it another successful event by Sunway Group. However, there were a few possibilities that the event could have been an unsuccessful event. Tonge’s research suggests there are characteristics of unsuccessful events such as failure to allow sufficient planning time, inadequate planning and inadequate market research, clashing of event dates and failure to adequately make provision for inclement weather conditions (Tonge, 2011).

Special events are usually managed in a short period of time, so practitioners must work carefully to maximise the opportunity (Johnston and Zawawi, 2004). However, the timing could have been bad as Malaysia had many unfortunate events happening in 2014, such as the missing plane MH370, MH17 being shot down, east coast flood and the AirAsiaQZ8501 that crashed. It would have given a bad impression towards Sunway Group’s brand image if they were to continue the event when all those unfortunate events happens at the time of LumiAir’s performance.

Next, the public would have been upset if the performance did not match the Malaysian culture. Although the production team were from Australia (LumiAir, 2012), it is important for the choreographers to receive feedbacks from a practitioner on the routines and costumes. A social conduct research should be done thoroughly and match the market’s interest. Sunway Group would have to take full responsibility if there was any negative feedback, resulting to a bad publicity from this event.

3.3 Target Audience

Sunway Shopping Malls and Theme Parks chief executive officer, HC Chan, also mentioned that this event was part of their corporate social responsibility programme as around 15,000 seats were allocated for the less fortunate (Nadiah, 2014). Please refer to Appendix 5 to see full images from announcement of special event.

In conjunction with Sunway Group’s 40th anniversary celebrations, Sunway Property rewarded purchasers with an upgrade to its loyalty programme - called Sunway Property PALS (Privileged Advantages for Loyal Supporters) that offers property purchasers more rewards when they purchase one or more Sunway Property units. They gave away LumiAir tickets to their loyal members as a token of appreciation. (Mysunwayproperty.com, 2014). The group held a loyalty programme and a campaign for Sunway PALS. By participating in this programme, customers had a chance of winning LumiAir tickets by spending at Sunway’s business entities and participating merchants. The campaign ‘Sign up & Win Rm 10,000 Weekly’ was held from October 27, 2014 to November 23, 2014 (StrawberrY Gal, 2014). Besides that, the show had a grand cirque style sequences and tricks in the air along with acrobatic ballet scenes that attracted international and Malaysian theme-park market.

Public Relation Activity: Sponsorship
Event : Jeffrey Cheah Foundation sponsoring Teach For Malaysia

4.0 Sponsorship

Sponsorship is an act of supporting a person, an organization or an activity by giving money, encouragement or any other sort of support for those in need (Cambridge, 2015). Sunway Group and the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation have sponsored a number of organizations, primarily associated with schools and education. The Jeffrey Cheah Foundation was established in March 2010, replacing the Sunway Education Trust Fund that was formed in year 1997.

As a corporate sponsor in a corporate partnership agreement, the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation has been sponsoring Teach For Malaysia, an independent, not-for-profit organization with a donation of approximately RM 150, 000 to assist the association. This type of sponsorship is called the Philanthropic Sponsorship, whereby in the areas of education, medicine and research, it is generally community based. It offers measurable advantages such as generating community goodwill towards a society (Johnston and Zawawi, 2004).

Figure 4 : The Jeffrey Cheah Foundation, 2014)

4.1 Advantages of Sponsorship

The support made by JCF goes towards aiding the TFM organization in achieving its mission to reduce the gap between rural and urban schools as well as to see growth in education. The organisation is fuelled by its mission: that one day, all children in Malaysia will have the opportunity to attain an excellent education. The Teach For Malaysia Fellowship is modelled after the extremely successful Teach For America initiative and is one of 19 partners of the prestigious global education network Teach For All. In April 2014, Teach For Malaysia Week was held and came up with a theme entitled “Joining Hands”, an annual weeklong initiative organized by TFM itself, which aims to increase awareness about education discrimination. It was a privileged for The Jeffrey Cheah Foundation to be a part of a common goal to improve education (The Jeffrey Cheah Foundation, 2014).

By collaborating with Teach for Malaysia, Sunway Group and JCF contributes to a direct and long-term action towards ending education inequity in Malaysia. Tan Sri Jeffrey Cheah, who is the founder and chairman of Sunway Group and Jeffrey Cheah Foundation, found great resonance in teach For Malaysia’s cause. Cited from Tan Sri Jeffrey Cheah “Giving back to society through providing quality education to deserving Malaysian students is my personal vision and I am happy to learn that Teach For Malaysia’s vision mirrors that’. He also shared his and journey of becoming a successful entrepreneur and businessman. His stories inspired the students to focus on their education and pursue it with drive (The Jeffrey Cheah Foundation, 2014).

Elizabeth Lee, who is the Sunway Education Group’s Senior Executive Director also joined in as an inspirational participant and shared her personal experiences with the students. The students were inspired and they gained from Ms. Elizabeth Lee’s successful insights about her road to success. Quoted Ms. Elizabeth, “To be good at studies, you must have a focus, determination and never give up. Accountants, architects, engineers, doctors or singers, BRING ON THE DREAMS!” She also gave some advices to the students to anticipate on what they need to gain success in life and make use of every opportunity given (The Jeffrey Cheah Foundation, 2014).

4.2 Disadvantages of Sponsorship

As sponsorship is one of the effective ways to raise brand awareness and is an act of goodwill, there are also disadvantages of sponsorship (Alison, 2013). One of the drawbacks of disadvantages would be negative image association. In regards to the event, if the crowd, namely the students of the school cause any trouble or disturbance during the occasion, it would affect the image of the sponsors. Crowds or audiences at any sponsorship events should be well behaved in order to keep the good name of the sponsors. Lack of control is another downside of sponsorship. For example, if the event were to be held without media coverage, the society would not be able to know what good the sponsors and the organization are doing for the society. Because Sunway Group, JCF and TFM are trying to end education inequity; it would be good for the society to know what and how they are doing it.
4.3 Target Audience

Now that the sponsors and the organization has enlightened the people about their missions and have shared inspiring stories to the students, hopefully all the students out there will be inspired and eager to study well and know how important education is for their future. Students who are currently in school and in colleges or universities should focus solely on their education as of now because in the future, it will not be easy to get the job they desire.

To add, during the Business with A Heart event held in October 2014 last year, Tan Sri Jeffrey Cheah mentions there are various initiatives that Sunway Group provides through education to help the community. Among them is the Jeffrey Cheah Distinguished Speakers Series to encourage life-long learning through free public lectures by eminent international speakers. (The Star Online, 2014).

Place: Pusat Bandar Damansara
Public Relation Activity: Crisis
Event : Metal Slab at MRT construction site falls on car

5.0 Crisis

Figure 5: Sub-contractor and staff sacked after metal slab at MRT construction site falls on car featured in the Star (The Star Online, 2014).

Crisis is defined as issue affection the organization and has not been resolved, or has had negative effects. It can also be a negative situation that has happened suddenly (Gordon, 2011). In the mid of 2014, Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Corporation has took a serious action by terminating the sub-contractual services of Bersatu Hati Enterprise due to negligence, following an incident involving two vehicles (The Malay Mail Online, 2014). According to news, the incident took place at Pusat Bandar Damansara MRT project site, where a car was crushed by a sheet pile that had slipped from a stack within the worksite. The impact seemingly caused the car to hit another car which was travelling beside it. The driver of the first car sustained cuts and injuries and was rushed to the nearby hospital for outpatient treatment, while the driver of other car escaped without any injury (The Star Online, 2014).

5.1 Target Audience/ Market

Figure 6: Hendra Wardi, the alleged son of the victim post on his Facebook account (Hendra Wardi, 2014).
Active communication behaviour is called information seeking because people in that group are likely to seek information on the issue (Broom and Sha, 2013). For example, they can share the information and communicate each other through Facebook, twitter, etc. Their family can be active audience because they are social media The only audience that was affected were the active audience such as the construction site workers, the victim’s family members, the sub-contractors’ company (Bersatu Hati Enterprise’s Sdn Bhd).

According to The Star Online, the alleged son of the owner of the smashed car, Hendra Wardi, posted on his Facebook page quote “My father barely escaped death at Pusat Bandar Damansara MRT’s construction site (near HELP University) (2014). The incident had given such worrying impact to the publics about their safety whenever driving nearby the worksite as it put the public at serious risk.

5.2 Disadvantages from the incident

Meanwhile, images which had been circulating on social media sites have gone viral and drew public attention, demanding answers from MRT Corp. This creates a bad impression not only to MRT Corp but as well as to Sunway Constructions. Additionally, this incident spread anxiety of safety and bad impression from some people especially public through the crisis. When the incident or any crisis happened, company can lose public confidence. The confidence of company can affect to their partners and sponsors. Then, partners and sponsors can withdraw from the company. It is difficult to regain the confidence that has been lost. So, MRT Corp responded drastically that has sacked the sub-contractor and staff working at the Pusat Bandar Damansara MRT construction site.

5.3 Impact of the event

In a statement, MRT Corp said that following investigation with MRT Project Delivery Partner MMC Gamuda KVMRT (PDP) Sdn Bhd, Bersatu Hati Enterprise’s services had been terminated (The Malay Mail Online, 2014). In addition, in enforcing strict compliance of these procedures, MRT has blacklisted Bersatu Hati Enterprise from undertaking any Klang Valley MRT projects. Full responsibility of this incident has been taken by Sunway Construction. The sub-contractor as well as staff who directly affected this incident were fired, with immediate effect. MRT Corporation and MMC Gamuda are said to be reviewing Sunway Construction’s safety performs at the site and curtained that they will close any gaps in terms of safety.

According to Johnston and Zawawi (2009), honesty and directness of communication are essential to preserve trust and reputation. Traditionally, the key concepts in good crisis communication are: tell the truth, tell it quickly, consistently and fully, contact affected families, employees, and other important stakeholders, and keep the media and important stakeholders informed of progress. Therefore, Sunway Group took precautionary steps to maintain the company image by avoiding speculation from public and media attentions. This is done by having only two selected media companies to cover the story, which are ‘The Malay Mail’ and ‘The Star’. This is a common Public Relation practice to keep this incident low profile and away from the public. By doing so, only the active audience whom reads these two media companies’ webpages are aware of the incident.

6.0 Conclusion

Although Sunway is known mainly as property development and construction as their core businesses, they’ve always held big events as well.

Campaigns, such as “Stop Hunger Now” was brilliant as it has a lot of advantages to the less fortunate. Sunway Lagoon Theme Park is a family theme park which is famous among Malaysians and international visitors as well. Every year. Sunway Lagoon is able to run a successful event that meets the visitors expectancy.

In 1997, Sunway education trust fund was formed but it was changed to The Jeffrey Cheah Foundation in 2010. They sponsored a number of organizations, primarily associated with schools and education. Although Sunway Group is known to be an established company, Sunway Group still faces crisis. For example, at the MRT construction site where a metal slab falls onto a car back in 2014. Although the driver escaped with no injuries, they are working hard to make sure such incidents will not repeat again.

.... Introduction top next gema actions are enough for everyday usage but occasionally you may need more power to define a complex transformation. You might, also, want to use the superior matching capabilities of gema to drive your program. GeL is a Lua 5 library that: allows the execution of Lua function (and hence of a C function) in a gema action provides the powerful text matching mechanisms offered by gema as a set of Lua functions it has been tested with Lua 5.0.2. ...experience. My seminar topic was about examining the imagery that appeared in the play Hamlet. A skill I developed was using technological equipment to present a presentation. Each group had to pick a topic that was in their interest to research online for information. The requirements started with presenting the information in front of the class informing the audience what imagery means and discuss using concrete examples from the play. This presentation gave me the opportunity to work with PowerPoint and Excel and then to present my information. I believe that in order to communicate effectively with the audience you have to have a well prepared presentation that will capture their attention so that you can present your ideas clearly. A skill that I had trouble was to be able to work as a team. The imagery seminar was a great opportunity for me to develop my team work skills because we were put in to pairs to complete the seminar. Each member in the group had specific responsibilities to the team in order for the seminar to be successful. Being in the group to work on the seminar was a great experience for me because I was able to see where my strong and weak points are in group work. I found that it was easier for me to communicate my ideas with Rachna than to the whole class. A big part of group work is good communication between Rachna and I. Communication is also a big part of my learning experience because I will need to be able to get my ideas out by communicating well...

...Inequalities Thomas Cunningham MAT221: Introduction to Algebra (GSO13360) Instructor: Justin Hazel Inequalities In this assignment I will be showing you how you can find out how to use Inequalities to find out how much you may or may not be overweight. You can use my equations and the examples of my work to find out exactly what category you might fall in. In this equation we are asked to use our own height to find out exactly if I might have a longer life span than the usual person. Before we start remember that W=my weight, and then H=my height. W=178.2 and then H=67 In this first compound inequality, I had to take the equivalent inequality and replace it with the BMI formula. My height and weight has been added in to replace the current H^. The next steps for this compound inequality I had to multiply all the terms by the denominator. There was some cancellation done towards the first phase of the problem. I then all three terms where divided by 703 to isolate W. People’s height of 67 might be different life span of those whom might weigh between 108lbs and 128lbs. 17<BMI<=22 17<703W/67^<22 17<703W/4489<22 17(4489) <703W<22(4489) 76313<703W<8978 76313/703<8978/703 108<W<128 In order to solve this second inequality, what I need to do is solve for W and place the values of W. The very first thing that happens is I multiply all the terms by H^ in order to take out...

Matrix organizations are kinds of structures that a categorized flexible and responsive and are characterized by employees having more than one supervisor and in order for them to perform at their highest level of productivity, they must have some area of expertise that is disciplined. The project team happens to become a creation of several highly imaginatively intelligent groups of people that are formed to collaborate with each other and strive at creating more diverse ideas, or putting a different take on some of the many already formed ideas and the opinions of those more diverse ideas. The collegial model works flawlessly when each member is able to be independent, but equally share management responsibilities or work out a specific rotation that meets each individuals peer or colleagues needs. The need or want for freedom or independence in the aforementioned paragraph has little merit when they must come together to satisfy matters that affect the entire group....

As every team member were unknown to each other, one of the team members spoke out and discussed the tutorial task. In the first tutorial the team members were totally unclear about the team goals. Individuals did not know what their role in the team is. ...2: Unwrapping ISLLC Standard 1 This week’s assignment was very interesting. I had not participated in an unwrapping activity since a workshop I attended in 2004. At the beginning of the exercise I was worried about being a part of an online team. I was especially wary of using the online group forum for coordinating the completion of the group project. I am, by nature, a worrier, but I should not have been stressed. The team quickly responded to my original message, we exchanged numbers, divided the assignment into manageable pieces, and one teammate volunteered to put the assignment together. At first, I was confused with the requirements, but after receiving guidance from the professor, I understood the expectations. Once the parameters of the assignment were agreed upon and set, everyone has met the established deadlines. I view this exercise as basic-training for when I am charged with larger projects as an administrator and I fully expect that the personality conflicts and obstacles to the effective completion of the assignments will be repeated in future projects. The leadership skills acquired as a part of the cooperative learning group will translate and be useful in my future role as an administrator. For the future, I need to trust the established protocols for completing scheduled tasks. Although I am quick to take on leadership responsibilities, I need to resist the urge to reinvent the wheel. I need to acknowledge that in a long-standing...

Cmis 102 Homework 1

...Program Description: This program will calculate all of the useable area (in square feet) in a house. This specific house contains four rooms, all of which are rectangular in shape. Analysis: My goal in creating this program is that it successfully calculates the useable square footage in a house that contains four rooms. The values which are required to perform the calculations will be the length of room 1 times the width of room 1(in feet). This will give the area of room one, which will in turn become the useable area for this particular room. The same length times width (L x W) formula will then be used for all subsequent rooms. After the area for all four rooms has been found, the sum of the area of each room will be the final output for useable square feet. The output values are as follows: * L1: The length for room 1 * W1: The width for room 1 * L2: The length for room 2 * W2: The width for room 2 * L3: The length for room 3 * W3: The width for room 3 * L4: The length for room 4 * W4: The width for room 4 * T1: Total square feet for room 1 * T2: Total square feet for room 2 * T3: Total square feet for room 3 * T4: Total square feet for room 4 * Total_SqFt: Total useable square footage in the house Test Plan: Test Case # | Input | Expected Output | 1 | Room 1 - Length:20 Width:14Room 2: - Length:16 Width:12Room 3: - Length:22 Width:16Room 4: - Length:12 Width:10 | Square Feet: 944 | 2 | Room 1 -...

Organizational Structure

...difference with the matrix organization, which is a big disadvantage, is that there are two bosses instead of one. There is a functional boss and a divisional boss (Bateman & Snell, 2011.) With having two bosses it uses what is called a Unity-of-Command principle which is a structure where the employees report to one boss who reports to one boss and so on until it gets to upper management (Bateman & Snell, 2011.) This is where the disadvantage of the matrix organization is, by having too many people in the line while information is being relayed it can lead to misinterpretation by the time it reaches upper management which is why the two boss part of the matrix organization is such a big disadvantage. Functional organizations group employees by the skills that are needed to complete certain jobs. The functional organization is a structure that is best in a stable environment (Bateman & Snell, 2011.) The company is not a stable environment there needs to be a lot of flexibility in the company in order to meet the demands of the numerous customers that we deal with on a weekly basis. Also the functional...
