It and the Changing Social Division of Labor

...an analysis of the profound changes in the productive structure of global capitalism. In the electronics industry, a new model of outsourced manufacturing has emerged as the centrepiece of globalized production networks: Contract Manufacturing (CM) or Electronics Manufacturing Services (EMS). This form of network-based mass production is closely linked to the disintegration of the value chain and the emergence of the “Wintelist” (Borrus and Zysman 1997) model of competition and the rise of “fabless” product design companies in key sectors of the IT industry. In contrast to the general perception of the “informational economy” (Carnoy et al 1993, Castells 1996) as service- or science-based, the rise of the CM-model demonstrates that manufacturing still matters in the "new economy" (Cohen and Zysman 1987). This development also highlights the interaction of new information networks with the restructuring of production, work, and the global division of labor in technologically advanced industries. In this paper, we want to take a closer look at the restructuring of production and commodity chains in the assembly of IT-hardware (such as computers, internet switching and telecommunications...

During the past two decades, a new trend towards integration and collaboration in supply chains has been recognised among researchers as well as among business practitioners. This philosophy is called supply chain management and has received enormous attention in logistics research. Collaboration based on supply chain management is expected to reduce total cost and improve service towards the supply chain’s end customers at the same time. The argumentation in existing literature is however seldom underpinned by more rigorous empirical material and becomes therefore conceptual and superficial. Furthermore, it is incongruous about what actually is done when companies collaborate and...

Trade-Off Between Service and Inventory Costs

...Twente, Enschede Industrial Engineering and Management Science Specialization: Production and Logistic Management Mark W.H. Roeloffzen October 9th, 2007. Summary Summary ----------Context NXP operates in a highly dynamic and globalized semiconductor market. The NXP supply chain control is like it peers in semiconductor business quite complex. To manage the supply chain and to deal with the market characteristics, six so called Business Renewal II objectives were launched as part of the one page strategy. On one hand the BR II objectives target for a lower break-even point and on the other hand it aims for operational excellence. For supply chain management this translates in lower stock targets on one hand and better supply chain performance on the other hand. Because of the existing link between these two objectives, this research will support the inventory management project team within the Global Supply Chain Management Competence Center by providing insights in the dynamics between inventory levels and the perceived service levels. With these insights, reducing inventories in an uncontrolled way will be avoided and customer service will be increased. Problem formulation The current tools (supply chain configuration tool and zero based...

Proc 5820

...Supply Chain Network Analysis and Design: Location Analysis PROC 5820 7 May 2014 Summary The principal thesis of this paper is to discuss location analysis and its role in supply chain network analysis and design. The emphasis of site location is of strategic importance to all organizations seeking to maximize profits and minimize costs. The logistics/supply chain network design has six major planning steps in the process of designing a comprehensive logistics/supply chain network: The first step is to define the logistics/supply chain design process. The second step is to perform a logistics/supply chain audit. The third step is to examine the logistics/supply chain network alternatives. The fourth step is to conduct a facility location analysis, followed by the fifth step, which is to make decisions regarding network and facility location. The sixth and final step is to develop an implementation plan. Location analysis is also discussed in terms of the advantages and disadvantages of globalization and major location site factors. The discussion then describes the methods for evaluating major location site factors and making location decisions based on the evaluation. The paper concludes with discussing different modeling approaches and the need for comprehensive planning. Dells Supply Chain

...exceptionally well because it catered to a niche market of higher end consumers. These customers sought to design their own machines with customizable options, rather than having to make adjustments post purchase on their own. The text, Supply Chain Management, by authors Chopra and Meindl (2012), illustrates the company’s success in this arena stating Dell experienced, “more than a decade of tremendous success selling its PCs only online” (p. 89). As part of this business model, Dell was able to avoid excess inventory by using a LEAN principle of ‘Just in Time’ manufacturing, assembling each PC only after an order was placed. This dispensed with costly inventory build-up and allowed Dell to manage their bottom-line. The decision to sell through retail outlets, later made by Dell, proved to be the right decision for the company. As the text outlines, lower end solutions with standard parts have proven to fill this gap for in store retail purchasing. Dell was missing out on this market segment by focusing only on the customer computer manufacturing market via online sales. Authors Chopra and Meindl present their support of this statement when they wrote, “Selling standardized models through distributors and retail stores allows the supply chain to save on transportation costs, which are a higher fraction of cost for these low-cost configurations” (p. 92). What is also an intriguing insight by the book, and was very successful in my own days of retail computer sales (when I...

...value does his thesis that there are 'three feasible pipeline designs' have for your industry or an industry you know? Introduction: In his paper, Professor Christopher, examines a number of arguments in an aim to come up with unique essential characteristics of an effective supply chain. He has discussed matching of pipelines to the market place needs under conditions of demand volatility and price pressure and thus discovers that the scenario of “one size fits all” does not apply to pipe line design, implementation and control. In his analysis of various researches from other authors, he suggests appropriate supply chain strategies that can be developed upon existing contingent market characteristics to achieve high level of customer responsiveness at a less total cost to the supply chain as a whole. He considers three key dimensions that may lead to a taxonomic approach to selection of the appropriate strategy with in a supply chain as: • Product characteristics • Demand characteristics • Replenishment lead time He marries together particular combinations of lean/agile operations and develops a taxonomy suitable for matching pipelines to meet market requirements based on demand(Predictable/volatile), Product(standard/special) and lead times( short/long). Arguments for effective logistics: Logistics is an important component of supply chain management (Stank et al., 2005). Logistics management may be defined as “that part of Supply Chain Management that...

The Importance of Information Sharing in a Supply Chain for the Supplier‘S Performance

...The importance of information sharing in a supply chain for the supplier‘s performance Bachelor thesis: Organization studies, 2nd semester, academic year 2011-2012 Thesis Circle: Time will tell…. A processes perspective on inter-organizational collaboration Name: PC Jansen ANR: 770926 E-mail: P.C.Jansen@uvt.nl The importance of information sharing in a supply chain for the supplier‘s performance Abstract This literature review investigates the effect of information sharing from a buyer to a supplier in a supply chain on the performance of that supplier, with taking in mind that the supplier has to combat the bullwhip effect. With the existence of the bullwhip effect, a supplier cannot make right forecasts and therefore has difficulties in planning its production and/or inventory control. This research shows that information sharing is the key solution to reduce or avoid the bullwhip effect and, by that, it positively influences the performance of the supplier in the chain. Integrated Supply Chain

...Exploring efficiency and effectiveness in the supply chain A conceptual analysis Benedikte Borgström Jönköping International Business School P.O. Box 1026, SE- 551 11 Jönköping Sweden bobe@jibs.hj.se Abstract Firms struggle for efficiency and effectiveness. Strategies involving collaboration between actors and integration of activity chains are reliant of factors that firms do not have direct ownership and control over. This has implications for strategizing, setting the goals and measuring performance. Efficiency and effectiveness are often used to describe performance. From a resource dependence perspective efficiency is defined as an internal standard of performance and effectiveness as an external standard of fit to various demands (Pfeffer and Salancik 1978). In supply chains efficiency improvements are e.g. Just-in Time production while effectiveness is achieved through customer orientation and innovation. The conceptualization of efficiency and effectiveness has its roots in system theory. Definition of the system is difficult for a quasi-organization as a supply chain that has blurred structural boundaries. Defining the system as processes of activities implies that the meaning of and the relation between efficiency and effectiveness might change as well. This is a conceptual paper with a purpose to describe and analyze efficiency and effectiveness as constructs based upon activity systems. The analysis of efficiency and effectiveness involves the meaning, the...
