Everyone deserves “unalienable rights” (Center for Civic Education), right? Well, that is how it should be, but that is not the case. For years, women and people of color or different ethnicity have been denied many basic rights that white males received with no problem at all. America is still a patriarchal society, although, male dominance may be weakening, it is not gone. Artists have the privilege to convey what they think is important to thousands tuning into radio stations, tv shows, music apps, and much more. As the Women’s Rights movement gains support every day, many artists have promoted this theme whether it is during their performances, lyrics, albums, clothing, or posters. Feminists raised awareness on crimes like rape, domestic violence, and sexual harassment to stop placing blame on the way a victim dressed or acted. They also lobbied to raise awareness that rape can happen in marriage and to prosecute men for abuse as well as opening centers for women to go to in order to learn about prevention of an attack and dealing with the trauma that followed (Galens and Edgar; 400-401). The lobbying suggests women were ready to challenge the way society perceived them in these situations. Susan Brownmiller wrote the powerful novel, Against Our Will: Men, Women, and Rape, written during this time period which influentially explained rape as a political problem, rather than an individual one. Sexual assault can no longer be taken lightly as the whole demeanor has adapted to society today. While some people still place blame on the victims saying ‘they asked for it by the way they were dressed’, times have grown and people are aware of how serious and common sexual assault and harassment are. New singers (e.g., FLETCHER), movements (e.g., the #metoo movement), and schools (e.g., Hingham High) have also addressed these protest themes.
