Sweatshop Labor Rhetorical Analysis

“It’s a painful fact that boycotting goods made by sweatshop labor only hurts the workers, not the factory owners.” This statement from Human Rights is proven true by many revealing facts. Because of this, Americans should buy sweatshop made products. In fact, articles such as document 1 explains how unemployed children turn to prostitution in hopes of not starving out on the streets. Also, document 4 states that not only should we not boycott sweatshop made goods, but we should be adding more workers. Additionally, cartoons such as the one presented in document 7 shows how America is campaigning against the wrong issue. Therefore, these are the reasons why Americans should purchase goods produced in sweatshops. In document 1, the author

Bob Jeffcott's Rhetorical Analysis: Sweatshops And Slave Labor

...Often in rhetorical writing especially when analyzing another person’s writing one comes across disturbing facts and stories that we wish would be to good to be true. However there is no running from the facts no matter how grotesque or horrible they might be. Horrible is just one of many words to describe the subject of the paper Bob Jeffcott wrote. The subject he chose was sweatshops and slave labor, which just by hearing the subject causes many to flare up in emotion. He offers his point of view from one who doesn’t have to go see these travesties first hand but still is informed. This is more than can be said for most people since people tend to like to think about themselves most of the time and choose to shut out unpleasant realties...

He appeals to pathos by using words or images designed to move readers and appeal to the readers emotion. B. The Struggle Against Sweatshops - Rhetorical Analysis

...Rhetorical Analysis Many agree that exploiting impoverished people as a source for cheap labor and consequentially cheap products is a morally unacceptable practice. However, the problem of sweatshops remains prominent in our globalized world. Tara J. Radin and Martin Calkins explore this problem in “The Struggle Against Sweatshops: Moving Toward Responsible Global Business” by breaking down their essay into two primary sections. The first describes the difficulties of both external and internal forces in permanently discarding sweatshops while the second division highlights the complexity behind any plausible solution. While the content of this article is of elevated interest, more important for our purpose is the success behind their rhetoric. They utilize the emotions of an audience on an already sensitive topic while simultaneously providing evidence from a variety of environments and sources to point out that their conclusive recommendations are of great value when the urge to change the manner in which we get products finally sets in. In their essay “The Struggle Against Sweatshops: Moving Toward Responsible Global Business”, Radin and Calkins both inform and persuade their audience at an effective level through their credibility, emotion, and logic—ethos, pathos, and logos, respectively—to conclusively come about at more fully understanding the need for reform in global labor markets. I will first define ethos followed by an analysis and illustration of the rhetoric...

Where Sweatshops Are a Dream

...Rhetorical Analysis “Where Sweatshops Are A Dream” In his New York Times opinion column, “Where Sweatshops Are a Dream”, writer Nicholas D. Kristof uses his experience living in East Asia to argue his positive outlook on sweatshops. Kristof wants to persuade his audience, Obama and his team, along with others who are for “labor standards”, that the best way to help people in poor countries is to promote manufacturing there, not campaign against them. He uses Phnom Penh as an example to show why working in the sweatshops is a dream for the families there. They would rather work at a sweatshop than stay in the dangerous garbage dump, searching for something to recycle for change. The writer establishes credibility through his experience living in East Asia and witnessing the living standards improve from sweatshop jobs. That growth included his wife’s ancestral village in Southern China. Kristof succeeds in writing an informative and interesting argument on the positive outlook on sweatshop jobs and how they are a dream to families of Phnom Penh. In Kristof’s argument he presented testimonies of women and children of Phnom Penh, this created effective evidence. These following quotes are from his discussion with some of the women he met while in East Asia. The First was a 19-year-old woman who was scavenging for plastic in the garbage dump. “I’d love to get a job in a factory” she said, “at least that work is in the shade. Here is where it’s hot” (Paragraph 6, pg. 110). Another...

Theodora Roosevelt

...Theodore Roosevelt, “A Multifaceted Man” As a foreigner to the United States of America, I have recently studied the lives and leadership skills of American presidents from George Washington to current presidency and I found Theodore Roosevelt as the most productive and intriguing of them all. A man that was very hardworking, diligent, focus and prepared for everything he did. Who is Theodore Roosevelt? A person with such incredible character and quality, selfless personality, concerned about the situation of less privilege people and those not in the position of authority or power. He had a very peculiar childhood. According to Encyclopedia of World Biography, “Roosevelt was born in New York City on Oct. 27, 1858. His father was of an old Dutch mercantile family long prominent in the city's affairs. His mother came from an established Georgia family of Scotch-Irish and Huguenot ancestry. A buoyant, dominant figure, his father was the only man, young Roosevelt once said, he "ever feared." He imbued his son with an acute sense of civic responsibility and an attitude of noblesse oblige. Partly because of a severe asthmatic condition, Theodore was educated by private tutors until 1876, when he entered Harvard College. Abandoning plans to become a naturalist, he developed political and historical interests, was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, and finished twenty-first in a class of 158. He also began writing The Naval War of 1812 (1882), a work of limited range but high technical...

Study Habits

.... Organization Theory Challenges and Perspectives John McAuley, Joanne Duberley and Phil Johnson . This book is, to my knowledge, the most comprehensive and reliable guide to organisational theory currently available. What is needed is a text that will give a good idea of the breadth and complexity of this important subject, and this is precisely what McAuley, Duberley and Johnson have provided. They have done some sterling service in bringing together the very diverse strands of work that today qualify as constituting the subject of organisational theory. Whilst their writing is accessible and engaging, their approach is scholarly and serious. It is so easy for students (and indeed others who should know better) to trivialize this very problematic and challenging subject. This is not the case with the present book. This is a book that deserves to achieve a wide readership. Professor Stephen Ackroyd, Lancaster University, UK This new textbook usefully situates organization theory within the scholarly debates on modernism and postmodernism, and provides an advanced introduction to the heterogeneous study of organizations, including chapters on phenomenology, critical theory and psychoanalysis. Like all good textbooks, the book is accessible, well researched and readers are encouraged to view chapters as a starting point for getting to grips with the field of organization theory. Dr Martin Brigham, Lancaster University, UK McAuley et al. provide a highly readable account...

I was thirty-five at the time, four years out of law school, recently married, and generally impatient with life. A seat in the Illinois legislature had opened up, and several friends suggested that I run, thinking that my work as a civil rights lawyer, and contacts from my days as a community organizer, would make me a viable candidate. After discussing it with my wife, I entered the race and proceeded to do what every first-time candidate does: I talked to anyone who would listen. I went to block club meetings and church socials, beauty shops and barbershops. If two guys were standing on a corner, I would cross the street to hand them campaign literature. And everywhere I went, I’d get some version of the same two questions. “Where’d you get that funny name?” And then: “You seem like a nice enough guy. Why do you want to go into something dirty and nasty like politics?” I was familiar with the question, a variant on the questions asked of me years earlier, when I’d first arrived in Chicago to work in low-income neighborhoods. It signaled a cynicism...
