A4-A5 Genogram Interpretation and Community Diagnosis
The interpretation of the genogram shows an increase in adult obesity, a decrease physical inactivity and the uninsured is increasing. ("Rutherford (RU)," 2014, p. 1) Obesity is common, serious and costly. In 2009-2010, more than one-third of U.S. adults (35.7%) were obese. ("Adult Obesity," 2012, p. 1) Obesity has several health risks such as diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, stroke, heart attack, congestive heart failure, gout, osteoarthritis and sleep apnea. With this in mind healthcare costs will increase as well. Obese people account for 37 percent of the United States’ population, but obesity-related diseases and health problems account for 61 percent of healthcare costs in the United States every year. (Tang, 2013, p. 1) Physical active is very important for everyone especially for the adult obese patient. Physical exercise helps to lower blood pressure, increases good cholesterol, lowers triglycerides, improves blood sugar, reduced abdominal fat and decreases the risk for heart disease. Teaching the community that walking, running, dancing are free ways to get in exercise. Along with exercise a good balanced diet is recommended. Teaching the community what to buy cheaply can help to maintain a healthy diet. You can cut food costs by eating more meals at home and by making sure they feature some of the healthiest foods from your supermarket -- foods like whole grains, vegetables, and beans. (Magee, 2012, p. 1) The balance between exercise and diet can improve obesity. (Balentine & Stoppler, 2012, p. 1) In Rutherford County the uninsured is increasing. Access to health care for the uninsured has become a problem not only in Rutherford County but in the United States. Most people cannot afford the insurance premiums and the medical bills when they seek healthcare. These medical bills turn into debt. Therefore, the uninsured do not seek healthcare. People without insurance coverage have worse access to care than people who are insured. Studies repeatedly demonstrate that the uninsured are less likely than those with insurance to receive preventive care and services for major health conditions and chronic diseases. ("Key Facts," 2013, p. 1)
The community diagnosis is to improve obesity levels, physical inactivity, and the access to care for the uninsured. In order to do accomplish our goals interventions need to be placed throughout the community. Reach out to the nurses and doctors within the community to establish a team to get the word out to the community free on obesity, physical active and to help the uninsured develop a plan for healthcare. The key to healthcare is preventive care steps. The community team needs teach preventive care techniques to the community which do not cost anything. The primary-care practitioner or nurse should be the community’s partner. There are preventive measures steps that could save millions of medical dollars and prevent injury, illness, disability, and premature death. (Wellness, 2011, p. 3) These steps include brushing and flossing teeth, exercise regularly, do self-breast and testes exams, do not smoke or be around second hand smoke, maintain a healthy weight, eat a balanced diet, fasten adult seat belts and make sure children are fasten by law, keep drinking alcohol moderate and do not drink and drive.
The community team needs to address the situation of disaster preparedness. Rutherford County residents do not know or understand the plan. During fieldwork of Rutherford County several residents stated that they were unsure of a disaster plan for the community and for themselves. (B. Hutchins, L. Parris, S. Anderson, & A. Tomlinson, personal communication, July 20, 2014) Community disaster plans and preparedness is important for the government side of the county as well for the people who live in the community. The community team going out into the community building awareness can develop change. Even though the emergency community team is doing a good job it takes the whole community to build a strong preparedness plan. Like the old saying it takes a whole community to raise a child well this situation applies to the same concept.
