Take a risk and Survives

The paper is LI-256 final paper; I decided theme is “Take a risk and Survives” I choose the two stories are The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain and Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe. They have different plot, different author, different setting and different protagonist. But they have same theme, this is human of adventurous and stronger survival ability.

“Robinson Crusoe” is the representative work of Daniel Defoe. It is a famous and impartment literature. The story talk about us a retire life. In navigation, Robinson riding in a boat ran aground near the island, the seaman and passengers were all drowned, but only Robinson was lucky to survive and the waves roll him on the beach in island. The protagonist Robinson that used strong will and unremitting efforts tenaciously survive on the island about 28 years. He experienced limited risk; he was to overcome the fear of living alone and no water of pain. He wins he own spiritual despaired and over back to home by British ships. The story is divided into three parts; the first part is about “Robinson” three nautical experiences. The second part is the main body of the novel, written survives experience in the island. The third part is written after he left the island.

“The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” is American writer Mark Twain long novel. It published in 1876. The background is St. Technetium town and it is near the Mississippi River in the United States. The story describing the young Tom Sawyer and his partner Huckleberry Finn and his girlfriend Bache Thatcher together go to adventures of experience. The protagonist Tom is a clever and naughty boy, he hated life in “ugly stuffy building”, and he not likes hypocrisy religious education. So he runaway rebelliously and form the “Pirates”. They are going to an island and enjoy “Pirates” life. They boldly of testify the murder. They found a box of gold in the hole. Gradually, Tom and his friends became well known for adventure hero.

The “Robinson Crusoe” and “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” have same theme are adventurous and survival. The story Protagonist Robinson and Tom all lived in the island. But I think The “Robinson Crusoe” have more than about survival. Because the Robinson lived in the island is an emergencies. He not anything plans about the deadly bottle, so I think the Robinson is hopeless when he just arrive island. For example, the Defoe written, “I had neither Food, House, Clothes, Weapon, or Place to fly to, and in Despair of any Relief, saw nothing but Death before me, either that I should be devour'd by wild Beasts, murther'd by Savages, or starv'd to Death for Want of Food. At the Approach of Night, I slept in a Tree for fear of wild Creatures, but slept soundly tho' it rain'd all Night. ” (Robinson, Chapter 5). So we could saw the Robinson want to survival will hard. Robinson is wisdom and perseverance of the people. Just begin, he is desperate, but slowly, his unique personality comes out, he feels full of hope for life. Such as he own said, “Thus fear of danger is ten thousand times more terrifying than danger itself ”(Robinson, Chapter 11). So he not pessimistic and afraid all day, he start undivided attention to arrange their own life, he built a small house, do the table, small box, catch the lamb, dog, kind of wheat and rice. In this way, Robinson used his hands create their own little kingdom.

“The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” have more than about adventurous. It is children want to become Pirates and go to island, so in “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” I thank children go to island is voluntarily rather than by coercion. Such as the story written, “They built a fire against the side of a great log twenty or thirty steps within the sombre depths of the forest, and then cooked some bacon in the frying-pan for supper, and used up half of the corn "pone" stock they had brought. It seemed glorious sport to be feasting in that wild, freeway in the virgin forest of an unexplored and uninhabited island, far from the haunts of men, and they said they never would return to civilization” (Chapter 13,139). So we could saw those children were happy in “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. For example the story said, “Young people relaxed and happy nature, like a long time that it is impossible to suppress”( Tom).

There is having a same point about “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” and “Robinson Crusoe”. I don’t like Robinson and Tom they all the leave their family go to adventurous. For instance, the Robinson said, “I would like to completely disregard the parent, or even defy Fuming, totally did not listen to the mother and begged friends to dissuade. I am of this nature, it seems destined to the future of my unfortunate fate”. (Robinson). And “Unfilial my son, back on parents, not the bounden duty of God to punish me so soon, is fair and just” (Robinson). However, there is an old sentence in the China, this is “When parents being alive ,we do not travel to the distance.” So I think Robinson leave parents and Tom leave aunt to Take a risk, they all the incorrect.

On the other hand, “Robinson Crusoe” is praise of labor and the struggle with the spirit of nature. “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” to reveal the irony of school education and social “American civilization” is destruction of nature for children. I think Tom and Huck repeatedly escape from society and family; it is because they are living in asphyxia cage.

Survival In Mccarthy's Cormac Mccarthy The Road

...I have sympathy for most of the character in the book The Road, because “the man” and “the boy” have to pass day struggling to survive where food was difficult to obtain. “They squatted in the road and ate rice and cold beans they’d cooked days ago.” “Already beginning to ferment.”(29). The landscape is blackened, and mankind is almost extinct “The mummified dead everywhere.” (24). When the boy's mother takes her own life, I Was sad for the boy simply because his mom, someone he depended upon gave hope on him. I wanted to hold on to the child and hold on to him even though he has no clue his mother has left him. I felt very sorry for the man because he has to tell his child where his mother was even though the child is clueless. What am i to tell him?”(58). As a mother, in some ways, I also felt sorry for the mother in this book, because most women dream of the day she will have a child of her own to love care for, but her mother had to give birth to her son after the mess and brought tear of sorrow. Risk Mananament

...The concept of security has many associations. It can include safety to individuals, the society, groups that include status, religion and colour, businesses and any other legitimate organizations. The concept of security has been an issue across generations both in animal and human societies. The often quoted sentence ‘survival of the fittest’ comes to mind in this instance. This suggests that individuals and groups (of any order) will resist and create conflict in order to survive in a particular environment, whether it is within a family, society, politics, or a business environment. Whatever the reasons may be or legitimacy of the conflict, it is up to the receiving party to ensure that they survive and grow in spite of security issues. In the business world, competition often produces security problems. The concept of globalization, the growth and expansion of multinationals has resulted in new security threats that are related to political and religious factors. In other words, business organizations can be subject to threats from local businesses, political parties, and terrorist organizations. Local businesses can create problems because the new entrants are seen as a threat and competition to their existing businesses activities. Political parties that are not in power may pose a threat because they oppose the ruling party and not the business enterprise. Terrorism and other forms of violence may occur against specific business organizations since they are seen as a representative...

In the US however the size of small firms sums up to 100 employees and medium sized firms may have less than 500 employees. SMEs are key actors in the world economy because they are an important part of GDP and play a big role for employment. Since today’s world becomes more and more globalized it is important that firms can compete on an international level. Big enterprises often choose to internationalize their business but for them this process mostly isn’t as risky as for SMEs, because while big firms may lose parts of their firm budget if something goes wrong, SMEs have to fight for their existence and may disappear at all if they choose a wrong approach of internationalizing. Usually small start-up companies do not survive longer than the first 5 years therefore it is very important for SMEs to take the right steps in order to become successful. Unfortunately for his family, in his youthful self-centeredness he failed to acknowledge human relationships. Though perhaps as Krakauer thinks, given more time, he would have. Chris challenged himself and went to the wilderness, with little amounts of food supply and equipment. The fact that he had chosen to enter the wild and take such huge undertaking; one would think he lacked common sense. He knew what the risks were and consequences, but he still did it. “It was important for him to see how independent he could be” (page 125). The unforgiving nature of Alaskan wilderness does not take part human’s fragility and Chris understood that fact; “If this adventure proves fatal and you don't ever hear from me again I want you to know you're a great man. Grid-Group Cultural Model.Doc

...Discussion | So what   Description This model has two dimensions, each a measure of sociability. Group The group dimension describes how strongly people are bonded together. At one end there are distinct and separated individuals, perhaps with common reason to be together though with less of a sense of unity and connection. At the other end, people have a connected sense of identity, relating more deeply and personally to one another. They spend more time together and have stable relationships. When people group together, then laws are more easily defined and policed. For society to survive when bonds are weaker and central control is less possible, individuals must necessarily display self-restraint. In management, low group does not manage resources, whilst high group does. Grid The grid dimension describes how different people are in the group and how they take on different roles. At one end of this spectrum people are relatively homogeneous in their abilities, work and activity and can easily interchange roles. This makes them less dependent on one another. At the other end, there are distinct roles and positions within the group with specialization and different accountability. There are also different degrees of entitlement, depending on position and there may well be a different balance of exchange between and across individuals. This makes it advantageous to share and organize together. In management, low group does not manage needs, whilst high grid...

Offshore Drilling

...It is not a recent discovery that mankind has realized that extracting petroleum from the seas has been extremely efficient and economically successful. In the late 1800s, citizens in California realized that wells drilled near the ocean were the best sources of crude oil and natural gas. In 1887, H.L. Williams decided to drill wells offshore and his first well went about three hundred feet into the Pacific. As expected, the extraction was abundant and extremely productive. During this time, the combustion engine was also being created which increased America’s demands for gasoline. The first well drilled from a fixed platform offshore was not created until 1947 by the Kerr-McGee Corporation and also marked the beginning of the modern offshore drilling industry. As a result, oil production was known as the second largest revenue generator for the United States. Creating offshore oil platforms entails more than three billion dollars. For some companies this could be a great investment, as for others it could signify a great loss. On March 23, 1989, Exxon Valdez had its first most tragic oil spill in U.S. history. Irresponsibility and carelessness led to the spilling of approximately 10.8 million gallons of oil into Prince William Sound affecting fisheries, the livelihood of citizens in Alaska, wildlife, and those who found Prince William Sound a sacred and pure place was now degraded. On April 20, 2010, British Petroleum (BP) reported a leakage of five thousand barrels of crude...
