I Will Demonstrate to My Speech Class to How Take Out and Put in Contact Lenses

...Evanson Michel Fiction Paper 2/11/13 ENG 113 "More than meets the eye". Most are fimliar with the saying, but what does it mean? It means you have to search beyond what you see, there is a deeper meaning behind a story. This is the essence of sybmlism. I will be analizing the sybolism in the short story Hills like White Elephants. The story by Ernest Hemingway is about a couple who are disussing a abortion procedure, but it is not made so obviuos to the reader. As a result the author uses symbolism to communicate main ideas in the stroy through setting, description and dialouge. The setting of the story uses symbolism to give the reader hints about main ideas. For example, the story takes place near a railraod, which symbolizes couples relationship is at a crossroad. The man and jig are disagreeing on the abortion of the baby. The man wants to have the abortion, while jig is relectant to giving the baby up so easily. Another example is the landcape, the author goes on to write how jig notices the lines of hills. The hills looked white againts the brown and dry valley (Roberts, Zweig 350).The white hills that contrast with brown and dry barren valley represent the choice between life and death. Jig either has to keep the baby, life, or the abort the baby, death. When jig walks to other the end of the station, the author descibes the fields of grain and trees along the Ebro river (Roberts, Zweig 352). This symbolizes the life in her belly...

Have You Ever Wonder Would It Be Better to Take Face to Face Classes or Online Class?

...Have you ever wonder would it be better to take Face to face classes or online class? There are many options available for those who choose to further their education. Students can choose online courses, face to face classroom setting, or they can choose both. Face to face classes require students to attend class on a regular schedule basic at a specific date and time. Online students are considered non-traditional students and have the convenience of accessing their classrooms from the privacy of their own homes. This essay will cover the differences and similarities of both online and Face to face classes. While online education and traditional education are different approaches to higher education, they are similar because both have teacher/student interaction, classroom assignments, and course reading materials. Whether we choose to further our education online or in a traditional school environment the ultimate goal is to obtain a degree. The internet has given us the opportunity to obtain a degree from the comfort of our homes which is convenient for most working adults. Online college requires students to manage their time wisely because they have a greater responsibility. However, traditional students have a set schedule to attend school. Students choose online college because of their lifestyle and its convenience. Most adults juggle working full time jobs, taking care of their families, and school. In conclusion my opinion is that if you don’t...

Violence Against Women

...Women My psychology class meets every Thursday morning. It is a small class of five students and one instructor. Being in such a small class was unsettling at first because I felt I could not be overlooked by the instructor. I have gotten accustomed to bigger classes where I would blend into the crowd and just be a name in the instructor’s book. Over the last three weeks, I have observed my classmates and my instructor and have learned a thing or two about them. I have also realized how being in a smaller class is actually much more pleasant than previously anticipated. Our classroom is fairly big considering the size of the class. There are eight tables with four chairs at each table. The walls are tasteless, showing only one poster advertising Bryant & Stratton’s impeccable ability to create the world’s best workforce. The teacher’s corner sits at the front of the room while the projector screen hangs on the left wall. Because this is a small class, this poses no problems but I can imagine the seating dilemma if the room were actually full while using the projector system. Mr. Streett is the instructor for this class, a recent graduate from Radford University with a Master’s of Art in Experimental Psychology. He speaks quickly repeating short sentences rephrased but implying the same meaning to help his students grasp the concept being taught. Though he seems to know his stuff, he comes to class unprepared, taking the first 30 minutes of class to make copies...

Online Education Versus Traditional Education

...adjust their schedule for themselves. If they work a full time job they can come home and do their schoolwork or even on their breaks and lunch time. If they have a family they can do their schoolwork around their schedule for their children if they really want their degrees. Some people will not put the effort forth because it takes away from their “me” time. In a traditional setting they have to be in their class at a certain time and a certain day of the week. It does not matter if work is scheduled for that time or not. They have to be present in the class to get credit for the class. After class they still will have homework to have done before the next class meets. There still is no “me” time when you do the traditional classes. They also have large amounts of classwork so they cannot even start homework in class even if they wanted to. Online classes you work at your own pace and if they finish the weeks class them can go on to the next week’s class assignments. If they have a paper due as a final they can work on it a little each week so it is not such a big project at the end of the class. If someone has to miss a traditional class they can ask a classmate for the...

Sociology

...evaluate how social class identities are created and reinforced in the contemporary UK Social class relates to the ways of life of similar social groups. The way of life involves both the culture and economic position of a group of people. Culturally it means the shared norms and values and economically it means the financial positions of the rich/poor. Both these aspects influence the way of life. Agents such as the family, media and peers create and reinforce class identities but postmodernists believe that the class system no longer exists as it has become fragmented within the contemporary UK. The family is one way of showing how social class identities are created and reinforce because the the family creates norms and values according to their social class status. During mealtimes the working class and middle class have different routines which can tell us what class they are from. For example the middle class usually eat dinner together with the family in the evening whereas the working class mealtimes are portrayed earlier to coincide with the end of the working day for manual workers. The family also represents class through how much parents take time out and devote time to a child’s school work. Reay (1998) shows that working class mothers have less time to devote to their children because they are more focused on balancing housework, childcare and paid employment but lacked understanding of the schooling system whereas mothers of the middle class influence their...

The Most Useful Class

...The Most Useful Class When it comes to public speaking, most people will tell you that they hate it and will never ever do it. Well if you ever want to become successful in your future, then it is a MUST that you take public speaking. It is a class that will benefit you for a life time and you will have NO regrets whatsoever taking public speaking. I myself learned a lot in public speaking. I took the class in high school, so I was kind of familiar and comfortable with it. But the high school class wasn’t as in depth as the college course is. I plan on joining the United States Marine Corps this fall. I know for a fact that public speaking will already put me ahead of all the other marines when I join. Most people think Public Speaking only applies to speaking in front of a large audience or a formal speaking type setting. But it doesn’t! Not only has this class helped me speak in front of large audiences, but it has also allowed me to become a better communicator as a person as well. And this is important in our everyday lives as humans. If you don’t learn how to properly communicate with another person then you won’t be very successful in life. This class is one of the key main ingredients when it comes to success in life. This class helped me build my speaking confidence as well. It will teach you principles and techniques that help you mentally when speaking in front of people. I have a buddy who wants to major in business for his college degree and he asked me if a...

Why Physical Education Should Not Be Mandatory in College

...firmly believe that gym class should not be a mandatory part of a college schedule. Simply put, I think this in large part due to the fact that other venues and activities exist for the opportunity to get oneself in shape, as well as the point that why should a student be made to take a class when he is paying a lot of money out of his or her own pocket for their tuition? He or she should be given their own choice when it comes to taking a physical education course of any kind. While the opportunity to take the class should remain, the choice to make such a class mandatory is imprudent and arbitrary, at best. If someone wishes to get themselves in shape, they can find the time to go to a gym, or find the time to run a track. As busy as a student’s life is, it is not so busy that some time cannot be put aside for their own health and physical well being. In fact, this should be one of a student’s most important priorities, and should not be difficult to pencil into a schedule. There are many ways outside of class that a student can get exercise. They could walk, run, swim, work out, play any variety of sports; the list can be unending. In short, activity can be done so it is both healthy and something a student wants to do. So why implement it as a mandatory activity that some students would not want to participate in? Some may feel that they already get enough exercise as it is: there would be no need to participate in a physical education class as they already have...

Can You Live Without Technology for One Day?

...surrounded by technology. It is a definitely an advantage to use those electrical devices in order to do homework or connect with friends and family, but it could be an issue for college students because too often they use their phones inappropriately, unaware of their surroundings and excessively use applications that detract in their time management. For example, students at NWC are using electrical devices everywhere: in chapel and in class. College students are supposed to focus on their academic life more than social life, whereas, at NWC some students are struggling to find their academic purpose because they focus on their social life more than anything else. Currently, there is a certain proportion of students who are struggling with this issue at Northwestern College. Half of the students at the chapel use their electrical devices or are doing something on their laptops instead of paying attention to the chapel message, which is a problem. More importantly, some students at Northwestern College use their electrical devices in class which leads to failure in academic life. As an educational organization, Northwestern...
