Risk Taking in Business

...Risk Taking in Business When I think of the word risk I think of daredevils, rebellious teens and getting into something you just might regret and according to the Business Dictionary they define risk as a “probability or threat of damage, injury, liability, loss or any other negative occurrence that is caused by external or internal vulnerabilities, and that may be avoided through preemptive action.”(Home,2014) We’ve been taught throughout our lives that those daredevils and rebellious teens were bad, but who’s to say they just weren’t risk takers. Risk taking is something you have to do in order to make a profitable and successful business, just look at some of the most successful businesses out there today they didn’t get there not taking risk. I’ve come to realize with all my research there are good and bad risk and understanding the thin line between the two could mean the difference between a smart business decision and unwise mistake. Taking risk is not something to do lightly it takes calculated reasoning and beneficial risks require careful planning. Bad risk tends to be a product of thoughtlessness. Fortunately, most CEOs and business owners wouldn't have arrived at their current position if they regularly made the latter type of decisions. (Hendricks, 2014) So I wonder what is a good risk? And I found it is the product of assessing needs, identifying areas that need improvement, formulating strategic plans and executing initiatives while anticipating mistakes...

During the class, I have seen some changes in my body. They are just small changes, but I can fell it. I still remembered the first days of class; I felt down a lot because I could not flexible with the directions. I just kept in mind that I had to turn right to the left or to the right. It made my steps hard and not flexible. However, now I realized that I just needed to let my body move the way it wants to. I should not care a lot about moving right or wrong. As well as so, I feel my body is more flexible and dynamic now. Every part in my body can move almost exactly the way I want them to be like leg, foot, arm, belly, etc. Especially, I really loved the way the professor let us have free dance between the exercises. I was not a good dance person. However, I learnt a lot. I learnt from the professor, and I also learnt was from my classmates. I often looked at the way they danced. From that, I repeated them by my own style and creating. Free dance time was my favorite time of class because I could learn a lot and express myself most. I think it was really a good way to learn new thing and create something new. Overall, my body changed somehow, maybe I could not tell all of them now, but I could realize it later in future events. At the first times, I thought that those small exercises would not...

...alarm and then taking my dogs out to potty at the absolute latest time I can without being late to work. This sometimes becomes a problem when one of my dogs is taking forever to go and I end up having to take them back inside before they are finished. I feel horrible for having to do this and wish I could allow myself more time in the mornings so that this will not happen. My dogs taking forever to go potty in the morning is not a good excuse for being late to work. I am such a procrastinator, that I am procrastinating right now as I am writing this paper. It is 8:30 p.m. on the day that this assignment is due, and I am just now getting started. I also tend to procrastinate when it comes to house cleaning or any other chore. I hate having a mess house, but it takes me forever to get up and clean. In order for me to eliminate the problem that I have, the easiest and first thing that I will do is go to a search engine such as www.Google.com and type in the phrase "how to overcome procrastination." I will try to find any information on how I can overcome this problem, and what causes me to be a procrastinator. The first thing that comes to my mind is that I'm just lazy, but I do not think that I am an extremely lazy person. By using Google to search for an answer to my question, I am likely to find a website where somebody asked the same question and received an answer. The type of information that I will gather will most likely include proven steps on how to overcome...

Study Habits in College Students

...text, the first important step is organization. After you read your material, and listen to the lecture it is important to take time to reflect on what you just learned before moving on to the next topic. Organizing the information in a way that makes sense to you is the most effective way to retain important points. For some people, making an outline and highlighting important words is a good way to etch the information into your memory. It is very important to make sure that the information in your notes is accurate so that when you need to reflect on it, it is correct. Taking notes with misinformation would defeat the purpose when it came to preparing for your exam. The next step in memorization is encoding. When you encode something, it is like you are making a permanent place in your brain for the memory. Some of the best ways to remember things are using imagery, such as photographs, to relate the information to. By doing this, when you see the image again, you will remember the concept or idea that is tied to it. Also, while reading your material, take the time to tie your personal life experiences to what you are reading about. I did this in this class when we were learning about reinforcement and punishment. While I was reading that section of the chapter, I thought about how it applied to the things I do with my children. Now when I see the term positive reinforcement, I remember the examples I thought of and know what the definition is. The third step in memorization...

Polarity Management

...PLANNING AND TAKING ACTION Katina Stephens Kaplan University Planning and Taking Action Polarity management, has been defined as a style of supervising that tackles conflict resolution on unsolvable problems. It places pressure on the importance of recognizing that some situations don't have solutions. It shows a “varied way of understanding complex problems and simplifying them “offering a both/and perspective to the either/or viewpoint”. (Catalyst Training, 2012) It appears to try to take advantage of gleaning the best from opposing viewpoints when it comes to dilemmas, contradictions, or polarities. Most complex problems don’t have a specific solution. Thus, the task of becoming an effective leader is dependent upon one’s ability to recognize and then manage those complex problems. Polarity management has the ability to present a unique set of principles that will test anyone to view a situation in a new light, especially when you dealing with a team, whether virtual or standard. “These situations are not problems to solve; they are polarities which require effective management. Leaders, teams, and organizations become more effective as they learn to distinguish between the two and deal productively with both.” (Johnson 2006) To be an effective leader of a team or an organization, management has to be able to manage unavoidable and unsolvable circumstances on a continual basis. So, the question becomes not if you can manage a problem, but how well. Which...

A valuable professional would make the difference and face the situations taking in to consideration ethics first. The ethics simulation game would provide two different dilemmas that would help the students to practice their managerial skills trying to make the best ethical decisions possible. In the simulation game, two dilemmas were presented. First the laboratory communicated to Quality Management that the analysis has shown that there is contaminant in the GBS – Fibranafren, which is an ingredient used in the majority of the company products. The results from the laboratory arrived after the products were already released and after taking into consideration the facts that everything indicates that the products are contaminated. However, the contamination is bellow FDA standards, and it would only affect a limited group of people with continued use of the product. The dilemma in this case is, whether the company should warn the consumers about the contamination and what kind of information should be provided to them. In the second scenario the FDA increased the official standards and under this new regulation the contaminated...

Management and Communication

...During this week’s reading I found chapter 16 about organization the most relatable. I like to think of myself as a very organized person both at home and in the workplace. However I had no idea what the meaning of Organization Culture was, and that there was seven steps to it. The steps are as following 1) Innovation and Risk Taking 2) Attention to Detail 3) Outcome Orientation 4) People Orientation 5) Team Orientation 6) Aggressiveness & 7) Stability. Out of those seven steps the steps that stand out to me are the first step being innovation and risk taking, being a native a native Californian and one from Silicon Valley I can see where companies have to be creative to succeed in the business. The second step is attention to detail; this should be something that everyone should do. No matter what their position is and whatever the company is. It’s the little things that make the difference and details are one of those “little” things. As well as step five: team orientation. In week two we learned how important a team can be to a company, so it only makes sense that this stands out to me just as much as the first two but now I understand how much it really makes a difference. Again, all seven steps are all very important but these three are the ones that stood out to me the most and made me think just a little more about what organization means to a...
