Groups and Teams

...Groups and Teams Sharon Young MGT/307 November 28, 2011 Dennis Keegan Groups and Teams Groups and teams are important to organizations. Although people seem to believe groups and teams are the same, they are not. The two have their own social relevance and are important in their own way. To gain a better understanding of how groups and teams differ, this summary will define the two. The summary will further discuss how diversity is important in an organization and how workplace diversity relates to team dynamics. Groups A group consists of small collection of individuals who share equivalent abilities and skills. The members of a group must work together to accomplish their leader’s goal. According to “WebFinance” (2011) “A group is a collection of individuals who have regular contact and frequent interaction, mutual influence, common feelings, and who work together to achieve a common set of goals” (Business Dictionary). Group members follow the guidance of their leader to reach the goal that the leader has set. For example, the leader sets the goals for the group. After setting the goals, the leader informs the group members of the plan of action that the group will take to attain the goal. However, the leader holds the group members individually accountable for the made contributions to the group. Groups are important assets for organizations because they help organizations accomplish tasks too difficult for one individual to achieve. With the right leadership...

...Our group for the Team Project consisted of Ron, Kirt Roosa, and Elton Loci. The team was tasked with designing a Portfolio Management process by which our Strategic Business Unit (SBU) would make decisions on what projects would fit into its current portfolio, as well as adopt processes to track and adjust the portfolio based on the overall strategy of the company. The decision that was made during the first meeting was to develop a portfolio plan for General Motors. Having the project split into separate sections for submission helped to prioritize our work, especially in early phases of the project. On the other hand, this project schedule also caused some problems in the end since the team mainly focused on the next section due rather than subsequent parts of the project, which often came back to give us problems later. This could have been prevented by reallocating the load on resources more evenly throughout the duration of the project instead of adjusting the amount and style of work from week to week. From the very beginning of the project, the group jumped right into the discussion of the project, rather than determine team mechanics or organizational structure. For instance, we opted not to assign a team leader to the group because: 1) we felt that there was not really a need for one, and 2) we felt comfortable playing off each other teammate's strengths in order to divide and complete the project tasks. Communication, as in any project, was a very important aspect...

Groups Verses Teams

...Groups and Teams According to Schermerhorn, Hunt, and Osborn (2008), a group is defined as a collection of people who interact with one another regularly to attain common goals whereas a team is defined as a small group of people with complementary skills who work actively together to achieve a common purpose for which they hold themselves collectively accountable. For this reason a group can only be a team if it meets the definition as mentioned (Schermerhorn, Hunt, & Osborn, 2008, p. 192). Consequently there are three differences between a group and a team: 1. Complimentary skills 2. Accountability 3. Number of people. In order to create and maintain high-performance teams it is important to understand how workplace diversity in a organization relates to team dynamics in an workplace (Schermerhorn, Hunt, & Osborn, 2008). Therefore the following will detail the three differences between a group and team in addition to explaining how workplace diversity in a organization relates to team dynamics in an workplace. Differences between group and team As previously mentioned, there are three key differences between a group and a team. To begin teams have people with complimentary skills whereas this is not a requirement for groups. Secondly people in a team hold themselves collectively accountable whereas this is not a required distinction for a group. Finally teams are classified as a small number of people whereas a group is not specific on the number of individuals (Schermerhorn...
