Issues have ranged from social injustices, colonialism, and women’s rights. Some included personal tragedies concerning women of Aboriginal descent living in British Columbia. It has been quite emotional at times to actually read about the struggles that have taken place right here in British Columbia regarding immigrants and Aboriginal people. We even got to meet the author of Mercenary English, Mercedes Eng, in person to make the words of her story really come to life. However, not all of the books we have studied convey negative outlooks of certain problems being faced. There have been positive social changes, personal victories and many moments that make the reader believe things can be made right if an effort is put into it. This research essay will focus on the positive view portrayed in three books studied this semester which include: Mercenary English, Active Geographies-Women and Struggles on the Left Coast and the Unnatural and Accidental Women. ...Happiness: a Human Disease -- An Examination of the Allegorical Theme of Existentialism in the Happy Man The short story, “The Happy Man” by Naguib Mahfouz, discusses the human condition, presenting existentialism as its central theme. Specifically, the story seeks to illustrate unhappiness of the common man and the effect it has on his life. It is an allegorical piece, in which the unnamed protagonist showcases the state of the human as unhappy; only scarcely finding joy. Indeed, the euphoric feeling the protagonist feels is contrary to what he usually feels and has adverse effects on his lifestyle. Mahfouz uses happiness to show that people are intrinsically unhappy as the protagonist ultimately seeks to remove his euphoria. He contrasts the initial feelings of joy with the concern that he feels later on. From the start, Mahfouz aims to demonstrate man's unfamiliarity with feelings of true happiness. “When he woke up,” he states, “He found himself happy. That was most strange compared with his habitual state of mind in the early morning.” This statement shows that the protagonist is too mired in the troubles of life, both present and past, to have ever experienced happiness. ...Final Paper In William Wordsworth’s poem ‘Strange fits of passion have I known’ he illustrates the Romantic view of nature and beautifully depicts the relationship between humans and nature. He uses a simple ballad form to relate the relationship between humanity and the natural world as one acting upon the other. He uses this simple dictation in his description of nature, which is real and concrete, allowing nature to be relatable to the reader, giving the poem a stronger impact on the concept of nature inspiring the mind. The poem begins with the narrator remembering a strange occurrence or “fits of passion”. This occurrence was one of great emotion that ultimately takes place in the last stanzas of the poem when the moon falls out of the sky and kills his lover Lucy. His connection with nature leads him to believe that such was possible. For Wordsworth presenting the Romantic ideals of nature was groundbreaking. Before this “strange fits of passion” takes place, Wordsworth sets the tone of the poem by stating that the narrator is unsure about telling the reader this occurrence. “I will dare to tell but in the lover’s ear alone”.
