Technological Advancements in Communication

Communication is necessary to run a business, and communication can take place in different forms. Two common types of communication are oral communication, and electronic communication. Technological advancements have improved business communication efforts, and save a business time and money. Although some businesspeople resist change, the advancements in communication still follow what is traditionally considered business communication. Oral communication can take place face-to-face, via the telephone. Electronic communication can take place via instant message, e-mail, and through announcements online. Some people prefer one method over the other, but both methods can be equally effective if all participants have good communication skills. Oral communication provides a slight advantage over electronic communication because participants can receive immediate clarification on any misunderstanding. The tone and message of electronic communication can be misinterpreted, and clarification may take several electronic communications until the message is clear. Today many businesspeople do not have time to meet face-to-face, or conduct business orally, so new technological advancements allow businesses to meet the needs of all people involved.
New communication tools available consist of tools that allow people to communicate orally in a meeting setting without being present in one conference room while other communication tools offer a more efficient process of communicating electronically. One tool referenced in the weekly reading resource is Smartsheet. This software permits businesspeople to communicate electronically in different languages, and across reporting lines seamlessly. Smartsheet provides the ability to involve more people in the decision-making process while eliminating third parties for translation (Citrano). Another communication tool available for business is IBM Sametime. This software opens communication among businesses allowing people to calibrate via instant message. IBM Sametime contains more than instant messaging. Businesspeople can hold online meetings in IBM Sametime that allow all attendees to share their screen for visual presentation.
Technological advancements have changed the manner in which people communicate, but the tools follow what is traditionally considered business communication. People who meet in virtual meeting rooms are able to communicate verbally, and technological advancements even permit the participants to view each other via teleconference. Some people argue that electronic communication such as e-mail is not a traditional business communication, but e-mail simply has replaced written communication that was previously delivered through the postal service. Technological advancements in communication have not changed traditional forms business communication, but have improved efficiencies in which businesses communicate with each other and customers.

Technological Advancements in Communication

...Technological Advancements in Communication Advancement in technological communication listed in the article was collaborative tools. One in which is called the smartsheet. The smartsheet was a place where many companies or parties involved in communicating could add to which each of their ideas and findings. Even if several languages are used. Instead of hundreds of emails being corresponded, each person uses the smartsheet to communicate, sharing data and information. This method of collaborative communication is lower cost as low as $25 each month, compared to other collaborative methods such as the Web 2.o Mashup server software which can cost a company a minimum of $50,000. The Mashup Server software does offer more features where it acts as a one stop shop for research, training, communication, wiki and even instant messaging. I feel that the Mashup Server software would be more beneficial in a workplace because it logs all communication while keeping everyone formal. This form of communication is not traditional and would be hard to get everyone on board. If people are used to corresponding via email and instant messaging, implementing a new program would cause resistance to change. One reason the resistance to the change would arise would be because the difficulty of merging the new software with other operating software programs already in place or the level of difficulty in learning the new system. The reason it is not traditional is because it is newer than emailing...
