The following will examine the article The Conundrum of Visibility: Youth safety and the Internet, written by Danah Boyd and Alice Marwick. The Internet is obviously a remarkable tool and has drastically changed and shaped the society we live in today. With all the good the Internet has brought to our lives, there is always a trade off or a negative outcome. Many adults are claiming that the Internet has a very bad influence on today’s youth since it is exposing them to sexual solicitation, harassment/bullying and exposure to inappropriate content. However, the main issue of this article is stating that the claims of the adults are not new to society and that these problems have been around for quite a long time and the Internet is just making these problems more visible. The article is stating that the Internet is making the claims of the adults visible to them and the reason why adults are blaming the Internet for these issues is because they are scared and do not know how to protect their children. They are focusing too much on technology and losing focus on the bigger picture. Society does not have the resources to help the youth that are in need and therefore we tend to look for something to blame, and choose to blame the internet. The article goes on to explain four main issues that come up in conversation when discussing online safety: sexual solicitation, harassment, exposure to inappropriate content and youth-generated problematic content, and is trying to prove that these issues are not exclusive to the internet. They also happen offline and the Internet is exposing these issues to our faces and we are not doing much to handle them. These four main issues will be discussed in further detail with the intent to prove that the Internet is not the main cause.
Sexual solicitation is the act of engaging in sexual activities, sexual talk or giving someone

Technology and Society

...Technology and Society We have all seen the sight of a group of people glued to their electronic devices in public places, Whether its texting a friend, or updating some form of social media, even checking the weather for the day. It has become a familiar look to see everyone around you solely relying on and hypnotized by these five-inch glowing screens. To some it might make them miss the old days where striking up a conversation with a stranger was an interesting way to pass time, to others of the newer generation it’s a crutch to make life more simple and easier to manage. Some might argue that these multifaceted devices hinder social behavior to a point of no return while most might say they are in fact more connected to the world around them. Arguments aside, It is without a doubt that technology today has provided a rush of accessible information and global communication available at your fingertips. With the buzzing new-age world we live in today it would be crazy not to admit technology in ways has helped humanity for the better. For instance hospitals have much better ways of treating and administering aid to those who are in need of medical attention. One thing we can say we all agree on is quality of life is extremely important to us as a society and technology in the medical field has greatly improved this in ways that were not possible before. From doctors being able to perform microsurgeries on the smallest scale imaginable to being able to receive a...

Technology: Beneficial or Harmful?

...Professor Elahi English 201 16 July 2013 Technology: Beneficial or Harmful? Throughout the vast history of humanity, humans have always used their innovative and cognitive skills to create tools to better improve their chances at survival on this planet. This technology advancement first began in the Stone Age when man fist discovered that stone could be utilized as both a harvesting tool and hunting weapon; which gradually developed into spears, bows and arrows, and swords. And as time pressed on, one of the most important and influential inventions since the beginning of time was designed in the shape of a circle: the wheel. However, unlike in earlier times, the evolution of technology in the past 60 years has been growing so rapidly that society has scarcely been able to keep up with it on a global scale. And due to this accelerated development of technology, accurate assessment and critical reflection on our dependency of these new technologies has been greatly hindered. So if one were to consider all the consequences and results of today’s technology objectively, could our dependency on modern day technology be viewed as positive or negative outcome? Both sides of this argument have solid, valid claims, but do the pros outweigh the cons or are the benefits of technology not worth the potential harm it can cause to our society. As the advancement of technology drastically rises, society’s dependency for these technologies also rises, however, this correlation can...

Technology and Society

...Hattie Roberts AC1009787 Technology and Society Assignment 01 Computers, how could we function without them? I am amongst an era where computers are something that seemed unattainable seen on a science fiction program. Many in my day thought that communicating with others from another state or another country was wishful thinking that would never in fact come to light. Look at the world now, with Y2K threatening a huge upheaval due to the fact one didn’t know if a computer was capable of changing to the year 2000. The world is so dependent of computers; simple daily activities are not capable without the help of this magic machine. Early computers were electro-mechanical, which means they used mechanical components as part of the computing process. The Harvard Mark I was one of many such machines, but it is unique because a team of engineers at IBM were involved in its creation (Smith, 2013). The 5-ton computer, completed in 1944, read instructions via paper taper. It lacked many of the features of modern computers but inspired additional work both at Harvard (where it ended up) and at IBM (which helped to engineer it) (Smith, 2013). With technology smelling blood in the water, programmers were forced to step up their game to trump the previous creator. Early computers built in the 1940s were government programs usually funded by a national military, but commercialization quickly developed. The first commercial computer was the UNIVAC I, which was built...

...branch of knowledge that deals with the creation and use of technical means and their interrelation with life, society, and the environment which is known as technology. Transformation of culture and social institution is social change. Social change occurs in all societies. No society remains completely static. This is true of all societies, primitive as well as civilized. Society exists in a universe of dynamic influences. Technology and social change is related because they are both dealing with an upgrade in people and the technology in their everyday use. Today, people are face with the increasing change of technology in our everyday life. Sometimes the change happens and we do not realize how it affects our lives. The use of computers, internet, and cell phone have a great impact on today’s society. The computers have changed how the information is saved and accessed. Now only with a few clicks on a mouse people can access almost any piece of information. Also the speed at which people can access information has never been faster. Even the use of the internet is evolving every second of every day. When computer networks link people as well as machines, they become social networks. They foster informal workplace communities that are usually partial and narrowly-focused, although some do become encompassing and broadly-based. The Internet is the decisive technology of the Information Age, as the electrical engine was the vector of technological transformation of the Industrial...

Technology in Society/2030

...Niki Streppone English Composition 1- Formal Essay 2030 American society and even the world as a whole today are becoming more dependent on technology everyday. Technology advances have increased at a much faster pace in the last 20 years and is only getting faster. Not only is it getting faster, but it is increasing at a much higher rate as well. We have advanced more in the last 5 years than we would in 15, say 20 years ago. That is almost triple the rate. There is the technology that we need, and the technology that we just desire. With both of those come some positive and negative effects. Living in the world of 2013, we can only imagine what it will look like in 2030. People this day in age are addicted and dependent on technology in many different ways. Some of the important things that we need, that rely on technology are communication, transportation, bills/financial needs, food preservation, medical procedures and medicine, and emergency situations. Those are generally the benefits of technology that we typically could not survive without. These types of technological advances by 2030 should be very positive, I think. For instance, better research equipment will help find cures and treatments to different diseases and disorders. I believe that in school systems there will be electronic paper that looks just like paper but when you write can be saved as a file. Most likely text books will be done away with too. Think about it. There might not even be a need...

Technology, Society, and Culture

...Robotic Surgery Technology, Society, and Culture HUMN432 Introduction: Robotic Surgery Robotic surgery is the latest development that uses robots and computer aided apparatus to aid in normal surgical procedures. It is a new technology and mostly used in well-developed countries. With robotic surgery a single surgeon is able not only to perform multiple surgeries but also do his/her work from any part of the world (McConnell, Schneeberger & Michler, 2003). Robotic surgery is a type of procedure that is similar to laparoscopic surgery. It also can be performed through smaller surgical cuts than traditional open surgery. There are small precise movements that are possible with this type of surgery. It gives some advantages over standard endoscopic techniques. Sometimes robotic-assisted laparoscopy can allow a surgeon to perform a less-invasive procedure that was once only possible with more invasive open surgery. Once it is placed in the abdomen, a robotic arm is easier for the surgeon to use than the instruments in endoscopic surgery. The robot reduces the surgeon’s movements. The robot assistance reduces some of the hand tremors and movements that might otherwise make the surgery less precise. Robotic instruments can access hard-to-reach areas of your body more easily through smaller incisions compared to traditional open and laparoscopic surgery. This procedure is done under general anesthesia where you are asleep and pain free. The surgeon sits at a computer...

Technology and Today's Society

...English 101 What sort of influence does today’s technology have on our society? The youth of today are constantly immersed in technological advancements that promote nonstop communication and instant gratification, whether through cell phones, gaming systems, laptops, or MP3 players. But most people are asking, are these technological advancements a good thing? Some people believe that the growth of technology has negatively influenced the social interactions of today's youth because it isolates individuals from reality, hinders communication, and perpetuates the concept of immediate satisfaction. As Clay Shirky states in his article, “Cognitive Surplus”, given that there are around 4.5 billion adults worldwide, "we live, for the first time in history, in a world where being part of a globally interconnected group is the normal case for most citizens." There are positive and negative influences with everything, no matter what the topic. But to have a positive impact, it’s how you choose to use the power of today’s technology and how much influence you let it have on your everyday life. Some of the negative influences that the constant use of technology has is it can hinder us from being in the moment, communicating and listening to the people around us, and how teens today constantly rely on their cell phones and the internet. As Maggie Jackson states in her article, “What Are We Thinking?”, “We’re too often sacrificing depth for breadth in the ways we make sense of the world...
