Telecommunication Evolution Timeline

The way we communicate with one another across distances large and small has changed radically over the last century. We as a nation have gone from the basic telephone used to talk to others across the country to “smart” phones that can be used to not only talk to one another but send text messages and surf the internet. In this paper we will review a few of the major milestones of the telecommunication industry. The first form of telecommunication was the telephone, invented by Alexander Graham Bell in 1876. This invention would later open the door to a variety of different types of communications. Another important milestone was the created of the Bell Company monopoly in 1888. By securing patents the company was able to manufacture equipment and provide telephone services with no competition. Most young people today do not remember a time before touch tone service. They take the menu prompt they hear when calling a company for granted. This touch-tone service did not exist until 1963. We can now choose one for accounting or two for the help desk. The next major milestone in telecommunications is the internet. Many think of the internet as the “information super highway” we use today. The Internet was created in 1969 as a result of the Cold War. It was created to be an effective form of communication in case of a nuclear war. It was meant to be used by the military, but with the introduction of a new interface in the 1990s even the most unsophisticated users to “surf” the web with their personal computer. The AT&T monopoly, the parent company of the Bell system, which was created in 1888 was finally dissolved in 1984. Now this is important because healthy competition helps the industry grow and flourish. The technology gets better as one company tries to build something bigger and better to one up the next company. There is proof of this with the invention of the first smart phone in 1992. The way we talk to one another would we changed again by first Internet phone, VoIP or Voice over Internet protocol, in 1995. The following year another important milestone came about. The Telecommunication Act of 1996 helped in terms of protecting the rights of consumers, ensuring all have access, and encouraging competition. Basically this act helped to open up the market to ensure consumers have alternative local companies to provide them service. These are only a few of the many milestones in the telecommunication industry. There are more, but these seem to be the ones that helped shape the industry we have today.

The Evolution of Telecommunications

...Telecommunications Industry: Evolution Timeline Marquita Sparks NTC362 – Week 1 – A. Carpenter August 27, 2015 When speaking about the evolution of telecommunications, this spans across approximately 200 years and has gone through leap years of innovations. The pre-historic age brought about using the smoke from fire to send signals to others from miles away. In the Ancient Greek book, The Iliad by Homer, smoke fires were mentioned in those pages which were dated to have been written about the early 1200s B.C. Later, approximately 700 B.C., carrier pigeons were trained to take a message from one person to another by memorized route. This was a tactic that became popularized especially during the Olympic Games of Athens, Greece, and later in wars with the Persians and the Mongolians. In the late 1700s, the French-born Chappe brothers invented the Semaphore system, which consisted of movable arms on a pole that denoted letters; the first commercial semaphore was invented about 1794 and spread from Paris to Russian, Italy, and Germany; these towers only lasted until about 1860. In 1843, Alexander Bain invented the first FAX, which was followed closely by the electric Telegraph which was invented by Samuel Morse in 1844. The “Morse Code” was widely used to send distress signals especially during times of war or maritime disaster. It wasn’t until 1876 that Alexander Graham Bell invented the first Telephone and applies for a patent. However, Elisha Gray, founder of Western...

History and Evolution of the Ict Industry in Zambia

...HISTORY AND EVOLUTION OF THE ICT INDUSTRY IN ZAMBIA. The first telephone exchange to be placed in Zambia was installed in Livingstone in 1913. The telephone circuit backbone infrastructure was developed in the major Zambian cities along the so called “line of rail”. The ‘line of rail’ spans from Livingstone through Lusaka to Copperbelt provinces. After the independence of Zambia in 1964, the country’s economy was based on socialistic principles until 1991. This means major that major business institutions and industries such as the mines, airlines, national railways, the post and the telecommunication were wholly or majority share owned by the government of the republic of Zambia. Therefore the Zambia Telecommunication company provided all telecommunication and postal services as a monopoly in the early years after Zambia attained independence. Liberalization of Zambian Economy In 1991, Zambia political terrain changed to a multiparty and democratic environment. The new government commanded a new liberalized economy where private participation in all spheres of the economy was to be maximized and government’s minimized and eventually phased out completely. In a major effort to liberalize the telecommunications industry, in 1994 the Zambian government passed the Telecommunications Act and Radio communications Act. This ushered a new era of private participation in the provision and operation of the telecommunication network and services. The Telecommunications Act also...
