However, I believe the fairies are aiding the child and trying to protect him. The world being 'more full of weeping than you can understand' suggests that world is full of evils of which no one can understand, in particular a young child. The fairies are trying to do the lesser of two evils and save him from that life, allowing to live freely like they do. This creates the idea of the fairies being far more empathetic creatures than initially perceived, however the element of them being mischief still remains, emphasised by the phrase being repeated. ...Tempting Fate Throughout the short story “The Monkey’s Paw”, the idea of magic, wishes and fate are casually introduced by Jacobs. Fate is a development of events that is beyond a person’s control and is predetermined by supernatural powers. Jacobs raises a genuine chill by underplaying the threats that will arise when tempting fate. Through greed, and supernatural events Jacobs weaves a tale to show that fate rules people’s lives and that those who interfere with it will suffer the consequences. The idea that the monkey’s paw is of supernatural origin is first brought to light by the sergeant-major who informs the White Family that “It has a spell put on it by an old fakir a very holy man” (Jacobs 2) which allows three wishes to be made by three separate men. The Sergeant-Major continues to tell the White family that the monkey’s paw has supernatural powers, he foreshadows through the words “He wanted to show that fate ruled people’s lives, and that those who interfered with it did so to their sorrow” (Jacobs 2). Through this quote, “The ominous threat of the paw is presented” (Brantingham). So, which is right, to live the fantasy of only thinking about this moment or to take off the veil over your eyes and to take on life head on? In his poem "The Passionate Shepherd to His Love" Christopher Marlowe writes about a young shepherd in love. Marlowe main focus is on the argument that the shepherd is trying to make to his love, pleading with her to come live with him and enjoy the pleasures of the life. In his poem "The Nymph's Reply to the Shepherd" Sir Walter Raleigh uses the young girl as the speaker responding to the shepherd in direct response to Marlowe’s poem. The young girl thinks realistically and points out the flaws in the perfect life the young shepherd has proposed to her. The shepherd seems to be very much of an optimist, whereas the young girl is a realist.
