THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO
STEIG LARSSON

THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO is a crime novel by the Swedish author and journalist Stieg Larsson (1954-2004) which, when published posthumously in 2005, became a best-seller in Europe and the United States. Murder mystery, family saga, love story, and financial intrigue combine into this novel. It is the first book of the Millennium series (best-selling and award-winning Swedish crime novels). Stieg Larsson, born in 1954, was a journalist. He was the editor-in-chief of the magazine Expo from 1999, and had previously worked at a major agency for many years. He was one of the world’s leading experts on anti-democratic, right-wing extremist and Nazi organizations, and was often consulted on that account. He died suddenly and unexpectedly in November 2004, soon after delivering the manuscripts for three crime novels to his Swedish publisher. These novels make up the Millennium Trilogy, which has gone on to sell more than three million copies in Sweden alone. Tragically, Larsson did not live to see the worldwide phenomenon his work has become. CHARACTERS
Mikael Blomkvist - A journalist, publisher of the political magazine Millennium, and the protagonist of the novel. Ethical, earnest, and a little naïve, Blomkvist accepts a freelance job to solve the mystery of Harriet Vanger’s disappearance in order to restore his good name after a libel conviction threatens his journalistic career and the future of his magazine.
Lisbeth Salander - The secondary protagonist of the novel and the titular girl with the dragon tattoo. Though iconoclastic and emotionally withdrawn, Salander is also fearless and a prodigiously skilled hacker, making her an ideal partner for Blumkvist in his investigation into the Vanger family.
Henrik Vanger - A wealthy industrialist and head of the Vanger companies. He devotes most of his life to uncovering the cause of Harriet’s death and appears to hold his family, which he apparently despises, responsible for her fate.
Martin Vanger - The second of two serial killers in the novel, Henrik’s great-nephew, and one of the primary antagonists. Despite his position as acting head of the Vanger companies and a seemingly benevolent demeanor, Martin hides a sadistic streak: in the tradition of his father before him he seeks out women to kidnap, rape, and murder.
Erika Berger - The editor-in-chief of Millennium and Blomkvist’s lover. Loud, brassy, and opinionated, Berger often expresses disagreement with Blomkvist’s decisions and his choice to work for Henrik but nonetheless offers what support she can.
Hans-Erik Wennerström - A corrupt financier and one of the novel’s secondary antagonists. He considers himself to be above the law, and he manipulates the media to leak information, protect his reputation, and hide his criminal activities.
Harriet Vanger - Henrik Vanger’s missing great-niece and the subject of Blomkvist’s search.
Nils Bjurman - Salander’s second guardian. He is a brutal and sadistic man who sexually assaults Salander and uses her guardianship to control her.
Cecilia Vanger - One of Henrik’s cousins. She works as a headmistress and briefly becomes Blomkvist’s lover.
Janne Dahlmann - The managing editor ofMillennium and a mole working on behalf of Hans-Erik Wennerström to leak information about the magazine.
Christer Malm - The art director and designer ofMillennium and the voice of reason in debates between Blomkvist and Berger.
Holger Palmgren - Salander’s first guardian. In contrast to Bjurman, Palmgren exemplifies the best of the guardianship system, and he earns Salander’s respect and a small measure of her trust.
Gottfried Vanger - Martin’s and Harriet’s father and the first serial killer in Hedeby. Twisted beyond measure, Gottfried molested and abused both of his children and inducted Martin into the practice as well.
Anita Vanger - Cecilia’s sister and the woman responsible for Harriet’s flight from the island.
Pernilla Blomkvist - Blomkvist’s daughter by his ex-wife.
Plague - A hacker and one of Salander’s acquaintances.
Isabella Vanger - The mother of Harriet and Martin and a source of frequent trouble for Blomkvist.
Birger Vanger - Cecilia’s brother and a verbally abusive older man who dislikes Blomkvist’s presence in Hedeby.
Armansky Armansky - The CEO of Milton Security and Salander’s boss.
Dirch Frode - Henrik’s lawyer and confidante.

SUMMARY
Mikael Blomkvist is an intrepid investigative reporter in Stockholm, Sweden, who has been convicted of libel against Hans-Erik Wennerstrom, a powerful business mogul. Following his trial, Blomkvist is determined to clear his name. After getting a mysterious phone call from a lawyer representing Henrik Vanger, the well-respected retired CEO of Vanger Corporation, Blomkvist meets with Vanger and learns of the mysterious disappearance 40 years earlier of Vanger's 16-year-old grand-niece, Harriet Vanger. Blomkvist accepts the business proposition that Vanger offers him: In return for trying to solve the mystery surrounding Harriet's disappearance, Vanger will provide Blomkvist generous financial compensation in addition to proof that Wennerstrom is a crook.
While Blomkvist becomes involved with the dysfunctional Vanger clan, we meet Lisbeth Salander. Salander is a 24-year-old hacker with a photographic memory and a dragon tattoo. Salander's troubled childhood and her refusal to cooperate with mental health professionals caused her to be declared mentally incompetent as a youth. However, with the help of Holger Palmgren, her trusted guardian, she's able to get a job as a private investigator for Milton Securities, for which she investigates both Blomkvist and Wennerstrom. Salander's stable life is threatened when Palmgren suffers a stroke and she comes under the guardianship of Nils Bjurman, who takes advantage of his power over her and rapes her repeatedly. After videotaping one of the rapes, Salander blackmails Bjurman into letting her regain control over her own finances and her life. A few weeks later, she's offered the chance to join Blomkvist in his investigation. Salander eagerly accepts the offer as she finds herself drawn to Blomkvist and sympathetic to elements of Harriet's case.
As Salander and Blomkvist grow to trust each other, they develop a tenuous romantic relationship. Together, they are able to discover that Harriet was not killed as Henrik Vanger suspects. Salander and Blomkvist learn that Harriet had connected the gruesome murders of women across Sweden in the 1940s-1960s to verses from Leviticus. Exploring this connection, Salander and Blomkvist are able to connect the murders to Harriet's deceased father, Gottfried Vanger, and his son, Martin Vanger, the current CEO of Vanger Corporation. Salander and Blomkvist are then able to figure out that Harriet was not murdered, but fled the family to escape Martin, who, like their father, violently raped her. Once Blomkvist and Salander discover Martin's wrongdoings, they have a violent confrontation with Martin, resulting in his suicide. Following this altercation, they find Harriet in Australia and reunite her with a surprised and thankful Henrik Vanger.
Having solved the mystery, Blomkvist remains disappointed that the information Henrik provides on Wennerstrom is over 30 years old. Salander comes to his rescue and reveals that she's copied Wennerstrom's entire computer onto a server during her initial investigation of him. Delighted, Blomkvist enters several weeks of intense writing as he creates not only an article for the magazine he co-owns, but also a book-length report on Wennerstrom's corrupt dealings. Salander, also interested in Wennerstrom's wrongdoings, particularly against his former girlfriend, seeks revenge on Wennerstrom. After studying the structure of his financial empire, Salander is able to skillfully siphon millions of dollars from his accounts and place the money into anonymous accounts to which only she has access.
Blomkvist is thrilled with his successes and is interviewed by countless media outlets about his investigation of Wennerstrom. Salander slowly realizes that she no longer sees Blomkvist as just a friend — she's fallen in love with him. This revelation threatens the self-contained universe Salander has created for herself, making her feel vulnerable. She decides to share her feelings with Blomkvist. But, when Salander sees Blomkvist enter his apartment with another woman, she chickens out and returns to her own apartment, bottling her feelings once again.

Science

...Science On the question of science, participants on various occasions referred to some of the misunderstandings surrounding this concept. It was repeatedly mentioned that, notwithstanding general agreement among development planners and practitioners about the crucial role that science has to play in development, many lacked a common understanding of its nature or the ways in which it can contribute to the wellbeing of the masses of humanity. As the discourse evolved over several years, many of these misconceptions were brought to light. Some of them are as follows: First, the practice of science is all too often reduced to the mere application of technology. What is lost sight of is the fact that science is a system of knowledge and practice that provides the methods and tools for the systematic and structured exploration of material and social reality. By asking questions about reality and seeking to answer them through a process of action, reflection and consultation, a population acquires the capacity to take charge of its own development and to promote the advancement of civilization. Due to the existing misrepresentation of the role of science in development, attention is focused on making people passive consumers of technology rather than on building their scientific capacity. Development Development as a concept is a victim of definitional pluralism. It is a difficult word to define. However, attempts have been made by erudite scholars to conceptualize development...

Utilization of Jackfruit and Ipil-Ipil Seed

...CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION A. Background of the Study The Jackfruit (Artocarpusheterophylla) commonly called “Langka or Nangka” is a species of tree in the Artocarpus genus of the mulberry family (Moraceae). It is one of the popular fruit species in the Philippines. This is manifested by its wide distribution and cultivation. In Eastern Visayas production has steadily increased through the years which enable it to ship to other regions and major cities like Cebu and Manila some 100 to 300 fruits approximately two (2) to three (3) tons per week. Every part of the jackfruit tree has its respective uses. The immature fruit is used as a vegetable and feeds while the mature fruit is used for desserts and it is processed into beverages and sweets. Its trunk is used as a lumber for houses and building materials. The leaves of this fruit are used as a medicine, fodder, and as a compost material. Its latex is in the list of ingredients for glue and paste. Its roots are used for handle for farm implements. The seed is used for food, also used in feeds, used for planting materials and for making candies. But none had studied the seeds as a potential coffee. Coffee is a beverage prepared from dried ground beans of Coffeaarabica, an African evergreen; the berries are rich in caffeine, which stimulates the CNS and cardiorespiratory system and results in mild addictive symptoms. The researchers pursued this study because using this study, jackfruit seeds can be made another...

Embodying the Gay Self: Body Image, Reflexivity and Embodied Identity

...Copyright © eContent Management Pty Ltd. Health Sociology Review (2010) 19(4): 437–450. Embodying the gay self: Body image, reflexivity and embodied identity DUANE DUNCAN Australian Research Centre in Sex, Health and Society, La Trobe University, Melbourne, VIC, Australia ABSTRACT The emphasis on a sexualised muscular body ideal in gay social and cultural settings has been described as facilitating body image dissatisfaction among gay men. Drawing on a concept of reflexive embodiment, this paper uses qualitative interviews to analyse gay men’s embodiment practices in relation to discourses and norms that can be found across and beyond any coherent notion of ‘gay subculture’. The findings reveal body image to be more complex than a limited focus on subculture or dissatisfaction can account for. In particular, gay men negotiate a gay pride discourse in which the muscular male body generates both social status and self-esteem, and deploy notions of everyday masculinity that imply rationality and control to resist gendered assumptions about gay men’s body image relationships. KEYWORDS: body image; gay men; reflexive embodiment; sociology INTRODUCTION Body image dissatisfaction and gay men Following the shift from individual pathol-ogy to cognitive-behavioural and feminist perspectives in psychology (McKinely 2002; Pruzinsky and Cash 2002), a significant volume of psychological and health research has identi-fied a greater incidence of body...
