Patent is common in people’s daily life from smart phone to air craft. What is a patent? In modern society, the term patent is usually related to a set of exclusive rights granted by a sovereign state. When an inventor has an new invention, he or she can apply patent for his or her invention for a limited period of time in exchange for detailed public disclosure. It refers to the right granted to anyone who invents any new, useful, and non-obvious process, machine, article of manufacture, or has a solution to a specific technological problem. A product or service is said to be a patent if it is new, it represents an inventive step and if it is invented for industrial application. However, Tesla AC defeated Edison’s DC patented inventions at last. From then on, citizens use AC for their daily use of electricity, and there are only few places using DC for daily use. To prove AC is a kind of safe energy, Tesla decided to form an electric lighting company and the came up with numerous patents, which paved way for George Westinghouse. This led to the setting up of a power plant at Niagara Falls, which powered the New York City. Edison was becoming marginalized in his own company having lost majority control in the 1889 merger that formed Edison General Electric.In 1890 he told president Henry Villard he thought it was time to retire from the lighting business and moved on to an iron ore refining project that preoccupied his time. Edison's dogmatic anti-AC values were no longer controlling the company.
