Choosing electrical engineering wasn’t my first choice when deciding what career path I wanted to advance on. As the day got closer for me to get ready to begin my application to transfer to Texas A&M, I looked at other engineering careers Texas A&M offered and electrical engineering caught my attention. I read further into the degree and decided to put electrical engineering as my first choice in my Texas A&M application. Electrical engineering is growing every year more and more due to the development of better and self-functioning machines that help make jobs easier to carry out. Another main reason I chose electrical engineering is also the high paying jobs it offers and as well many opportunities in the working field to advance and become

Multiskilling

...MULTI-SKILLING BARRIERS IN THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY IN NORTH-WESTERN NIGERIA Nasiru Adamu1, Mohammed Hassan Nensok2 and Adefemi Aka3 Department of Quantity Surveying, Waziri Umaru Federal Polytechnic, Birnin Kebbi. Nigeria Department of Building, Waziri Umaru Federal Polytechnic, Birnin Kebbi, Nigeria The need to improve productivity and cost effectiveness has made some companies to adopt a multi-skilling labour strategy where workers can work across their traditional occupational boundaries. The study assessed the problems and barriers of multiskilling using a cross-sectional survey of construction workers in some selected cities in north-western Nigeria. Descriptive statistics was used in the analysis. Results show that lack of training and limit on human skill retention by workers are among the major barriers of multi-skilling. It was concluded that multi-skilling can lead to improved productivity and cost effectiveness if these barriers are minimised. It was recommended that construction companies should provide adequate training for their workers so that they can be multi-skilled. Keywords: construction industry, multi-skilling, productivity INTRODUCTION Two of the most critical challenges facing the construction industry are the limited availability of skilled labour and the increasing need for productivity and cost effectiveness (Hegazy et al. 2000). One potential solution already being used by some companies is multiskilling (Dada and Ekpe, 2006). It is argued...

SEVERAL YEARS LATER, TTHE SECOND CONFERENCE WAS HELD IN 1996 AT MESSIAH COLLEGE, IN GRANTHAM, PENNSYLVANIA. THE 1999 CHRISTIAN ENGINEERING EDUCATION CONFERENCE BROUGHT TOGETHER A DIVERSE GROUP OF DEDICATED CHRISTIAN ENGINEERS. The goal of these conferences is to glorify God, to foster community among Christian engineering educators, and to encourage and challenge each other in our work of kingdom building. Abraham Kuyper, one of the great thinkers within the Reformed tradition of Christianity, has said that there is not one square centimeter of the creation that is not claimed by Christ. As Christian engineering educators of whatever tradition, we seek to stake that claim in our discipline, exploring how...

The organization also has responsibility for settling transactions in the state’s wholesale spot market for electricity. But the term “ERCOT” also is used loosely in other ways. For instance, the term can describe the geographical footprint for retail electric deregulation in Texas. It is also sometimes used to describe the state’s wholesale energy market. This report touches upon policy questions relating to all these conceptualizations of ERCOT: as an organization, as an energy market, and as the area of Texas with competitive electric suppliers. To distinguish between these meanings, the term “ERCOT” will be used whenever practicable to refer to the organization, “the ERCOT region” will be used to refer to deregulated areas of the state...
