Introduction

The learners and teachers of English and EFL (English as a Foreign Language) textbooks are three major inter-related elements in the process of present day education. Hutchinson, 1994 cited in (Evaluating an EFL textbook - A new English Course) states that, “The textbook is an almost universal element of ELT teaching”. Therefore, a textbook can be mentioned as a useful instrument which serves as a guide or an instructional manual for studying a particular subject. Against the common belief that students are the key in this direction, many scholars hold the view that textbooks are the heart of education with regard to the fact that both teachers and students are to a large extent dependent on the books (Sarem, S. N., Hamidi, H., Mahmoudie, R., 2013).Therefore, it is clear that a textbook facilitates the teaching and learning process and thus, is helpful both for the teacher and the students.

Textbooks are compiled and developed because they are the most convenient means of providing the structure that the teaching-learning system requires. Textbooks are a good solution to overcome the weaknesses in teaching materials. Ansary and Babaii (2002) cited in (An Evaluation of English Language Textbook 'Say it in English' for first year intermediate Grade in South Arabia, 2012) state that, “Although the textbook is not the only tool for the teaching and learning process, it is still of a significant impact for achieving the language learning objectives. Since teachers find it difficult to develop their own classroom materials, have limited time and lie under external pressure that restricts their ability, it gives more emphasis on the use and utility of the textbook to compensate the loss of authentic materials" The content of a particular textbook generally aims at achieving the competency levels defined in the syllabus.

A Textbook Evaluation

...Running Head: A TEXTBOOK EVALUATION A Textbook Evaluation: Honors Calculus for an Eleventh Grader Using four different evaluation tools, three different math textbooks were evaluated for use within an honors eleventh grade calculus classroom. This report will include the results recorded for each textbook, and will then indicate which textbook was evaluated as the most suitable for an eleventh grade reader. The Fry readability graph was the first method used for the evaluation of each textbook. The graph was developed in the 1960’s and later revised by Edward Fry in 1977. The original version was created for African teachers who taught English as a second language. After the revision it also included explanations, directions and an extension to the 17th grade level. The Fry readability graph is used to determine the appropriate grade level for a chosen textbook. During this evaluation a total of three passages were used; two passages from the beginning of the text and one passage from the end. After choosing the three different 100 word-count passages, the number of sentences in each passage were counted and then averaged. The syllables in each of the 100 word-count passages were also counted and then averaged. The Flesch-Kincaid grade-level score was the second method used in determining the readability statistics. was formulated with the use of technology. For this report, Microsoft Word 2007 was used to determine the readability statistics. After...

...TEXTBOOK REVIEW Purchasing and Materials Management Textbooks A Review by Dan Reid Bowling Green State University The area of purchasing and materials management has entered a challenging era. In an effort to retain its competitive standing in the international marketplace, American industry has turned to purchasing and materials management for help. The importance placed on purchasing and materials management is highlighted in a forthcoming study done for the National Association of Purchasing Managers by Hahn and Kim which found that more than two hundred universities and colleges now offer courses in this area. General observations can be made about the textbooks available in this area. First, if purchasing and materials management is to remain a viable focal point for retaining the competitive edge, professionals in this area must interact successfully with engineers, production planners, vendors, quality assurance personnel, controllers, management information systems, and computers. The diversity of knowledge required is evident in the textbooks. Although a core of standard topics has been developed, the emphasis placed on each topic varies considerably according to the author's biases; the same can be said about the coverage of peripheral topics. Second, academic research in purchasing and materials management is in its infancy. Most of the research referenced or techniques used have 878 James M. Assessment and Text Evaluation in the Content Area Classroom

...Assessment and Text Evaluation in the Content Area Classroom My content area text book that I chose was an Algebra 1 textbook. Algebra 1 is usually taken in either the 8th or 9th grade. To get estimated grade level I used Fry's Readability Formula. To get this estimation, I randomly selected three passages from the textbook of one hundred words each. For each section of one hundred words, I counted the number of sentences and the number of syllables. For the first one hundred word sample, the number of sentences was roughly 4.9 with 180 syllables, the second sample was roughly 3 sentences with 131 syllables, and the last sample was roughly 5.3 sentences with 156 syllables. This averages out to roughly 4.4 sentences with 155.67 syllables. According to the Fry's Readability Formula, this textbook was estimated to be between the 10th and 11th grade reading level, which is a little bit higher than it should be. After determining the reading level of the Algebra 1 textbook, I then took another passage, from the same textbook, and performed a cloze procedure. To do this, I took another random one hundred word sample and deleted a random word from the second sentence and from there after deleted every five words. The test was then given to two different students. Here is the cloze test I created: Cloze Test: The process of designing an experiment begins with determining what type of data is needed and how it should be obtained. The best way to test a _______ would...

Bookstore Case

...Introduction Currently the University Bookstore is facing an obsolescence of its unsold textbooks in the warehouse. This memo is trying to find the inventory estimation method, the major causes of loss, and suggestions to improve bookstore’s internal control. Retail Method/Cost-To-Retail Ratio Retail method and estimation method are the two ways to estimate inventory. For the University Bookstore and other retailers, retail method is the better choice. First, the retail method is easier to use. Because of the seasonal sales period and a wide variety of products with different costs, it is complicated for retailers to record every product’s costs, prices and sales. The retail method allows retailers to make physical counts in summer break when the bookstore is not busy. Also, retailers just need to record the retail price of inventory instead of recording cost, retail prices, and total sales. Second, by relying on the current cost-to-retail ratio rather than historical cost, the retail method is acceptable by GAAP. For retail method, cost-to-retail ratio is one of the most important information for retailers to estimate inventory. Cost-to-retail ratio for new and used books can be calculated by using the following formula: Cost of goods available for sale/ (Retail price of goods available for sale + Net markups). The cost-to-retail ratio for new books is 0.7297, and for used books is 0.5813. Then the reported ending inventory on June 10, 2010 is $707,901 for new books...

Understanding History 415

...thoroughly understand where a specific person came from and what they have done. If we were to study individuals without knowing prior context for example the French in Vietnam; if you begin reading in the middle of our textbook in chapter two you would believe the French were going to be in Vietnam for the long haul and were not going to accept defeat. But in all reality, by the end of chapter two the French had all but surrendered and were overpowered and America was forced to come into Vietnam. From there into Chapter three, its hard to find French presence in Vietnam. So without knowing prior context from chapter three on you would have almost little to no clue that the French had tried to take back Vietnam under a nationalist puppet government. This is why it is so very important to know the context of prior history. I do not believe many people in my age group even know the French were involved in Vietnam; I for one had no information about Vietnam other than it was an unpopular war America was in that left many veterans out in the cold because there was no support. After reading two chapters of the text book, my perspective is completely changed on this topic and this is why prior context of history is important. In my honest opinion I believe my textbook is going to be my greatest resource. It may seem generic, but as I continue to read I am learning with each new page things I didn’t know before. And for so long...

Media Sources

...Media Summary The media sources I used this week are the same media sources I used in the previous weeks of this course. The media sources I used for this week’s topics included the textbook, the online videos provided, and my wife. I used the text book for most of the assignments this week. I felt like the text book for week 2 and week 3 did a good job of explaining the meanings of the topics presented and did not require additional readings. Chapter thirteen introduced the concept of sustainable income, or “the most likely level of income to be obtained in the future.”(Kimmel, Weygandt, Kieso, 2011). Chapter thirteen also explains how irregular items are presented, comprehensive income, the horizontal analysis, vertical analysis, how to compute ratios, and the concept of quality of earnings. Another valuable media source was the online videos. The video “Balancing the Books: Understanding Financial Reporting” discusses accounting tools, how the balance sheet works, profit and loss, and other topics. Like the previous videos, this video directly relates to and supports the topics in the text. Also, like the videos in previous weeks, the video is a nice change of pace from reading long text. I actually liked the videos used in week two more than the video used in this week’s lesson. The “Jeopardy” style video was a little boring and the way the contestant flashed back to his experiences made it a little drawn out for my taste, however I understand the attempt to make the...

Work

...Rosie Mobbs Unit 45 Rob Clegg Unit 45- Independent learning M1- Explain the value of three different resources in the preparation of the complex piece of work. D1- Evaluate the three resources in terms of validity. In this assignment I am going to be talking about a complex piece of work that I have already done for an assignment, and I will be explaining the value of 3 different resources and evaluating the 3 sources in terms of validity. The 3 resources that I am going to be talking about are: the internet, a text book, and NHS facts. I found all of these resources useful in different ways, and also reliable in different ways. I chose these particular resources because I have many opinions about them, some good, some bad. The mix of opinions is good because I can discuss both sides, and have a good balance between the opinions. The internet The source that I will be talking about first is the internet. The use of the internet helped me a lot with the assignment, this is because I was easily able to just search up what I needed to and then was able to put it into my own words and add it into my piece of work. I think that it also made my work better because I knew that the websites I was using were reliable and all the information in them was correct. And I think that this made my work good because I knew the information was correct and knew that I didn’t put anything in that was incorrect. Another way that it helped to support my work was that it was quick and...
