The movie, The Babadook, is categorized as a horror movie and normally, one would not think that a horror movie would have a real message to convey, certainly not one good enough to be studied in a film class. The Babadook contains themes of mental illness, abuse, and loss throughout the entire film. These themes are achieved through the usage of color scheme, dialogue, character action, and character train of thought shown through those actions. In the end it all culminates in a brilliant show of the monster, darkness, and the mother standing up to what The Babadook represents, even accepting it for what it is. Amelia’s sister also suggests that something is wrong with Samuel, and possibly even Amelia. Amelia and her sister have a falling out after this encounter because Samuel pushed Ruby off of the playset, as she was telling him that his house was depressing and that he didn’t have a real dad. There is the dialogue between Amelia and the police officer in the station – where he questions her and her thinking completely. When Amelia becomes possessed by The Babadook, she starts to bully Samuel, in the way she speaks to him, calling him names, killing the dog, and even attempting to manipulate him that way by saying that the dog needs help; because he had locked himself in his room. She also isolates him, which could be considered a form of abuse, since he has no other contact to the outside, besides his mother and Mrs. Roach, their neighbor. Even before she gets possessed, Amelia does ask Samuel why he, “Can’t just be normal”, and appears to feel that he is asking too much of her, especially when she begs the doctor to give her something to, “Help him
