I am reading “The Bass, The River, and Sheila Mant” by W.D. Wetherell. This story is about a 14-year-old boy during the summer at his cabin on a river. He has a crush on his 17-year-old neighbor, Sheila Mant. When he finally asks her out on a date, she says yes. While on their way to see a band, the narrator catches a fish on his line and has to make a choice between the fish or Sheila. In this journal, …show more content…
The narrator is very inclined to continue the date for a couple of reasons. Over the course of the summer, the narrator tries to impress Sheila Mant (girl next door) many different ways. To try and impress Sheila, the narrator would swim laps, back and forth, from shore to shore of the river. He also would dive into the river off of his diving board until she got up and left. Often, throughout the summer, while Sheila was tanning on a float, boys would come rowing by and check her out as they were going past her. Many times throughout the short story, the narrator tells us how beautiful Sheila Mant is. “There was a summer in my life when the only creature that seemed lovelier to me than a largemouth bass was Sheila Mant” (Wetherell 1.) Just about everything that the narrator does in the short story revolves around Sheila Mant. Many times, the narrator would be watching her parties from behind the hedge by her house. He watched her so much that he knew exactly what mood she was in just by the way she was sitting. After the narrator finally gathers enough courage to ask Sheila out, she drops a bombshell on him when telling the narrator on the way to the fair that “fishing is dumb” (Wetherell 3.) Hearing Sheila say that, put some doubt in the narrator's mind.
