Sanchez English 102 10/24/14 Abstract In this paper, I argue that the film and comic Batman the Dark Knight Returns, can be compared to Henry David Thoreau’s Civil Disobedience in the way that Batman disobeys the law by returning back to Gotham city and fighting crime. I also show that Batman displays civil disobedience when he does his best to protect Gotham city and fight the government, promising to never give up. I show that, much like Thoreau, Batman is solitary and engages in his own war by himself against the police department, criminals, and army. Just as Thoreau willingly goes to jail for his beliefs about the Mexican War, Batman fights for what he believes to be right, not only for him, but for the people of Gotham city. Well, I was on Instagram the other day and there were way too many comments on various posts actually DEFENDING this piece of shit. With the everyday stresses and the hassle of a normal life some people need to escape from their mundane reality. They can do this by reading books, watching movies, or playing video games. Unfortunately, some people cannot find the line between reality and fiction and often blur the two, or disregard reality completely. There are many cases of people who choose to do bad because it is what they want to do and there are others who do this because of something that happened in their lives at a young age. There is really no way to know when the need starts or how it manifests itself in an individual. Doctors and scientists who are trying to figure out if criminality is psychological or biological, have had a long standing debate. Which path has the correct answer to this question or at least the most promising evidence and where does it all start? For Sammy Clay, the sidekick role apparent in the ordering of his and Josef’s names provides him a creative and continual outlet for his sexual desires, until the final crisis of the novel in which his learning of this very trend allows him to break free of his role and live his life in fulfillment and contentment. The connection between Kavalier & Clay and Batman becomes apparent not only through linguistic observation, but also through several references Chabon makes in the novel comparing one or both characters. Arguably, the interrogation Sammy faces at the trial about Wayne and Grayson’s relationship is the most explicit in that they both live together and they work as a team to achieve a common goal. The dualities that appear in Stevenson’s and Wilde’s work pay tribute to mans’ opposing, and even conflicting, nature that rage inside them.
