The Brain on Video Games Are video games just for entertainment purposes? Although many believe that video games are for passing the time and entertainment. Many people I’ve ask said they “corrupt the brain, ruins the attention span and worsen the social skills” In the media we see headlines saying how video games are damaging our brains, but are they really damaging anything? A negative always has to have a positive. I am going to show you that gaming has benefits for your brain. Not only is it entertaining, it also has benefits for the brain During my middle school years, I played a lot of Grand Theft Auto (GTA). While playing GTA I learn there was more to it than committing crimes and making my avatar number one. While playing you need to memorize several game patterns such as the weapon specification and also many maps. The players are also put to unraveling a complicated puzzle that requires you to process enormous amounts of data. There are resources inside the game, those resources are key to survival; players have to constantly manage these in the most effective manner. Rather than rotting my brain I was doing the opposite. With playing GTA I have improved my memory, my problem solving and my resource management. I’ve also improved my hand-eye coordination, fine motor and spatial skills. GTA isn’t the only game that I found out was helpful, but it was the most surprising to me since it was a game that most people blamed for their own violent behavior. The most common views are from parents, many parents would say they are time-wasters and they’re the reason why their child has become anti-social and does poorly in school. According to Psychologist C. Shawn Green ‘video games teach kids high-level thinking skills that are needed in the future, they make them smarter’. Since technology is become more advance, video games make the transition to the “high-tech world” more comfortable. All the colors, the animation, the challenges, and the reward of winning make learning fun. The fun makes the child want to practice, which is the only way of learning a skill. In multi-player games, children are encouraged to work with other players so that they can accomplish their goals. This makes gamers form friendship, with many people around the world. Some of my closest friends are from foreign countries and how I met them was from video games. According to studies, gamers tend to be more social, successful and educated than most people. Many parents complain how video games affect the long-term health of their child. Not many games require physical movement, but there have been studies showing the health benefits of gaming. Two years ago the University of Utah examined the effects of gaming on children who were diagnosed with illnesses, such as: autism, depression, and Parkinson’s disease. The students, who observed the effects, designed a game to help with the study. The children who played the game showed improvement in their “empowerment, resilience, and ‘fighting spirits’”. The ability of the game activated positive emotions that contribute to the kids’ attitude towards their illnesses. Yes, video games are here for entertainment, but now as technology is advancing we are learning that there is much more than entertainment. In the years I have been playing games, there is not one that I’ve found that has no benefits to the brain or to the health. All games have benefits, some are obvious than others, such as educational games. There are many more studies, showing how video games have benefits for everyone. I’m not saying that we should all play more video games, but we should consider the benefits for playing the games.

There is one type of video game genre that draws attention though, action. Many people believe that action video games increase violence tendencies thus they believe that all video games are bad. Does this mean that all video games are bad? Like any other product out there, video games have pros and cons. Some pros to action video games include low-level vision enhancement, visual detail attention, speed of processing and statistical inference (Bavelier, Green, Han, Renshaw, Merzenich, and Gentile, 2011). I believe that video games have many physical and mental factors about them that are beneficial. This can range from helping with cataracts to even helping with depression. A Professor named Daphe Bavelier who works at the University of Rochester studies brain and cognitive sciences. She conducts studies on young people who play action video games.
