[The Call to Action]

[Thomas Gainey]
[HIUS 221-D49 201340]
[09 November 2013]

In his speech to the Virginia Convention, Patrick Henry challenged the people of Virginia to a call of action. He wanted the people of Virginia to no longer sit by and watch as Britain continued to oppress and bind the people of the colonies. He challenged them to exit their comfort zones and take on the challenge of something unknown to them. He did not want them to continue the efforts of peace or diplomacy, but one of action. He showed them they had but one alternative and that was to fight. In his view, they had exhausted every possible means of peace, and the leaders of Britain had turned a blind eye to every one of them. He told them that they had been slighted, insulted, disregarded, and seen in contempt before the throne. Throughout the speech, he tried to invocate a sense of urgency and responsibility. He tried to get them to see that by sitting idly by, they were becoming servants and slaves of Britain. He told them that the chains of slavery could be heard all the way from Boston. He wanted them to join their brethren in the fields and stand up against the tyrannical control of Britain. He asked them, what more did they have than to fight? They had tried everything the past ten years with no results other than more suffering. They were challenged by him asking; is it wise for us shut our eyes to the painful truth? He asked them, are they that have eyes and ears not to hear and see what is happening around them. Rise up he challenged, sit no longer, and turn you deaf ears and blind eyes from their struggle for freedom. For him, he expressed it was a question of freedom or slavery. He felt it was his responsibility to arrive at truth. He also felt it was his great responsibility towards God and his country. He told them that he could not hold back his opinions at such

Marijuana-Importance And Call To Action

...Importance and Call to Action Marijuana, as mentioned multiple times until now, is a very common, yet controversial substance. It has caused many arguments over if it’s morally acceptable to use and if the benefits are worth more than the risks. In the end, it is an important part of society, because almost every American has heard of it. The importance of this issue has been brought up time and time again, however there is another issue that needs addressing that could change people’s view on marijuana. The Internet, and media itself to a lesser extent, contains stories and articles that are biased or even falsified. This is because people who want to spread their beliefs will publish articles that show their side in a good light, so to speak,...

Equal Rights

...Stephanie L. Davis Professor Randall Gordon English Composition II 10428 22 February 2014 Equal Rights: Action or No Action In the article “Letter from Birmingham Jail,” the author Martin Luther King Jr., is responding to a minister’s opposing comments to King and his Southern Christian Leadership Conference organization’s actions in Birmingham, Alabama. The author reflects his point by portraying the fear of the residents of Birmingham and thus evoking the same emotion in the reader to justify the actions that were taken. King also adds further detailed information explaining the time and situation along with various activities occurring in the same area which explains the feeling and temperament of Birmingham. Although King was attempting to explain the call to action, the article rambles and addresses so many topics that the reader becomes lost and by the end has forgotten the actual goal of the correspondence. The article was written with a very passionate and disgusted tone for how colored people were being treated in the southern states. His choice of words that include “intolerance”, “injustice”, and “racial” stress both his deep pain and personal anger for the way that he and other colored people are being segregated and reacted to by whites, law enforcement, merchants, and various people in the community. Each term causes the reader to pause and contemplate the feeling of prejudice, how it would feel to be judged by the color of your skin, and have laws created...

Jacintha Saldanha Case Study

... hosts of commercial radio station 2Day FM made a prank call to acquire confidential information of one of its patron at the time, Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton. The suicide of Jacintha Saldanha surfaced three days after being the first person to receive the hoax phone call before passing it to the duchess’ private nurse. This essay aims to highlight the ethical implications involved in this case study, the PR strategies taken by the radio station and whether the actions taken are appropriate in regards to the death of the British nurse. When the Jacintha’s case of suicide arose, the ultimate question was: Why did she turn to suicide? Despite previous records of Jacintha’s suicide attempts (Taher 2012), it was reported that she had no signs of mental frailness at the time of her work shift before she received the prank call (Sykes 2012). While it remains unclear if the hoax call drove Jacintha suicidal, it may have acted as a catalyst (Baker 2012) since a note containing expression of anger addressed to the two radio hosts was found after Jacintha’s death (Johnson 2012). The ethical implications ensued involves multiple parties including King Edward VII’s Hospital itself. The hospital holds the responsibility to keep records of patients confidential. Privacy is everyone’s right and should not be deprived of having it. The breach of the Duchess’ privacy occurred as Jacintha, a staff nurse had allowed the hoax call to go through. The situation...

The Perils of Indifference Rhetorical Analysis

...time in concentration camps during the Holocaust, he explains the horrible conditions that people had to live in. He then says about the people who were also there, “They no longer felt pain, hunger, thirst. They feared nothing. They felt nothing. They were dead and did not know it.” By saying this in his speech, Wiesel automatically brings forth the emotions of the audience. Specifically, these details bring out a feeling of guilt. Guilt is one of the strongest negative emotions, and therefore forces the audience to formulate a reaction toward these events. Also, people throughout the world long for world peace. Because Wiesel’s audience is, in a sense, the people of the world, his call to end indifference in the world is one that will draw out an uprising in their hearts, a call to be better people overall....

Ethics

... January 13, 2014 Holly Martinez de Andino Ethics Case Study Ethics refers to the values of manners in which a person finds out the finest way of action to take when facing a choice. Ethical impasses are a regular part of daily living; possessing a technique for making ethical choices is fundamental for communal acceptance. In this article, the topic to study is a situation inside a doctor’s workplace to find out what legal and ethical consequences influence the judgment-making procedure and what course of action is appropriate. In this situation, Jerry McCall is a workplace helper with guidance as together a therapeutic assistant and a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), working for Dr. Williams. While in the office unaccompanied by anyone else, a patient calls the office asking Jerry to call in a restock for a medicine report for Valium, an antidepressant, since he is going to the airport to take a flight. The patient also declares to be a companion of Dr. Williams and that the physician at all times provides him a little supply of Valium before he takes off. Jerry’s ethical problem is whether to call in a restock for the patient. The answer is no, for lots of reasons. The clearest explanation is that Jerry is not certified to carry out the appeal for a restock. Although Jerry has guidance as a therapeutic helper and is an LPN, he is working as a workplace...
