The causes of inflationary pressure on New Zealand’s economy

The Official Cash Rate is the interest rate set by the Reserve Bank of New Zealand to meet or keep inflation under control since 1999. So it is a very important and basic monetary tool for New Zealand’s government to adjust or indicate the market interest rates with the banks in NZ. Generally, the market interest rates are set or held around at the RBNZ’S OCR level. For example, if the OCR is set higher than before, then the market interest rates for savers is going to increase as well. As a result, people in NZ will tend to spend less for goods and services and place more deposits with the Banks in NZ. On the contrary, people in NZ for loans or mortgages are inclined to borrow less money from Banks. It is because the interest rate for loans may have to be paid higher by individuals or businesses in NZ (RBNZ, 2012). Under this kind of situation, in recent years, due to there are rapid decreases on the OCR in New Zealand, It caused more and more lending activities of commercial banks to all kinds of individual and commercial loan applications. This sort of economic activity could result in the increase of inflationary pressure on the New Zealand’s economy. Whereas, the reason for the inflation of New Zealand is not just that simple or the rising inflation in recent years should not be completely attributable to the lending activities. But also should take other factors into account.

In effect, the rate of inflation getting higher is mainly dependant on the situation where demand of goods and services exceeds the economy’s capacity to sustainably supply goods and services (RBNZ, 2012). Based on this situation, the shortages and costs raised on production will emerge in the society of the economy in NZ. For example, if factories want to work flat out to meet this excessive demand, then the employers of

Macro Economic Variable & Stock Return

...INTRODUCTION Macroeconomic Variables Macroeconomics is a branch of economics dealing with the performance, structure, behaviour, and decision-making of an economy as a whole, rather than individual markets. This includes national, regional, and global economies. Macroeconomic is a factor that is pertinent to a broad economy at the regional or national level and affects a large population rather than a few select individuals. Macroeconomic factors are key indicators of economic performance and are closely monitored by governments, businesses and consumers. Macroeconomic factors are the factors which affect the wider economy. In other words these factors seem to summarize the picture of economy. Macroeconomic variables include economic output, unemployment, inflation, interest rates, money supply, exchange rate, foreign reserves, savings and investment. Variables used in study: • Consumer Price Index (CPI) Inflation is a rise in the general level of prices of goods and services in an economy over a period of time. When the general price level rises, each unit of currency buys fewer goods and services. Consequently, inflation also reflects erosion in the purchasing power of money – a loss of real value in the internal medium of exchange and unit of account within the economy. A chief measure of price inflation is the inflation rate, the annualized percentage change in a general price index (normally the CPI) over time. A consumer price index (CPI) measures changes in the...
