Alan´s character is a perfect representation, of this quote. He is portrayed as an extremely narrow-minded person. His actions cause conflict in the community, resulting in people getting hurt. Secondly, Old Jacob is another character in the novel that performs acts of intolerance. Furthermore, Joseph is a character who strictly believes in his religion, and bias towards his own views. The characters in the novel are causing a divide in the community of Waknuk.

Jacob believes the deviances are a message from the god above. and that it signifies that another one is coming.
